The
best
time
to
visit
this
site
for
an
expat
is
the
first
weekend
in
April,
over
the
Kings
Holiday.
There
is
a
festival
to
celebrate
the
Phraya
Phichai.
At
night
this
place
lights
up
-
an
old
style
market
with
local
foods
and
snacks,
concert
and
beer
garden,
small
carnival,
and
local
talent.
Almost
everyone
dresses
in
traditional
style
Thai
clothes
or
Songkran
flower
shirts.
Sitting
down
to
watch
the
local
talent
stage
with
a
plate
of
Khao
Pan
Pak
(Laplae
District
Uttaradit
signature
dish)
is
the
perfect
way
to
understand
the
culture
of
Phichai
District.
The
show
opens
with
a
local
school
performing
dance
and
acrobatics
to
live
traditional
Thai
music.
Then
there
is
a
reenactment
performance
of
the
Phraya
Phichai's
story
-
stay
back
from
the
horses!
I
sat
up
front
to
see
better,
but
quickly
moved
back
after
nearly
being
trampled.
Up
next
was
a
contemporary
dance
completion.
Early
morning
on
one
of
the
days
there
is
also
a
5k,
10k,
or
50k
bike
race
that
weaves
between
the
rice
fields
of
the
beautiful
district.
This
shrine
is
to
commemorate
the
Phraya
Phichai
Dap
Hak,
the
hero
of
Phichai.
During
the
Ayutthaya
period
this
muai
thai
fighter
served
the
King
on
the
frontier,
fighting
against
Myanmar.
He
famously
fought
with
two
swards
and
was
victorious
even
after
one
of
his
swards
broke
in
half.
people
around
the
district
celebrate
him.
Nearly
every
local
has
a
decal
of
him
in
the
window
of
their
car.
People
come
to
the
monument
to
pay
their
respects
and
light
incense
for
their
hero.
You
can
also
tour
his
museum/home
on
site,
a
beautiful
teak
home
(not
open
at
night).
There
are
also
athletic
fields
on
site
used
periodically
by
local
schools
and
community.
