The Arch of Galerius is a masterpiece of architectural design. Its towering structure, adorned with intricate reliefs and detailed sculptures, leaves visitors in awe of the skill and craftsmanship of its creators. The arch features four distinct facades, each depicting scenes from Galerius' military campaigns and showcasing the artistic mastery of the time. The attention to detail and the precision of the carvings are truly remarkable 👌🏻

The arch looks enormous at day time, and shows its beauty of another style with dim light in the evening. There are engraved sculptures which deserve to be deeply observed for a while. The place is also located in the city center. It is absolutely worth a visit when you are just around the corner 🙂

Commissioned by Roman Emperor Galerius, the Arch of Galerius or Kamara (Καμάρα). The arch is located in a central location in the city. Remains very busy because it’s embedded in the life of the city. Housing and roads come very close to the monuments. It’s an artistic area, there is a certain vibe and it’s a cultural and student center. It’s not very popular but it’s very impressive. It’s located on a very busy area Very close to the Rotunda. In terms of historical facts. This is 4th-century AD monuments – including the Rotunda – in the city of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece. The Arch of Galerius most of the original stands on what is now in the central location of the city. The arch was dedicated in 303 AD to celebrate the victory of the tetrarch Galerius over the Sassanid Persians at the Battle of Satala. Romans made sure to commemorate their victories so their enemies would know this as well in Rome or elsewhere!

Kamara was built around 305 A.D. It was one of the arches of 4-arch building standing at the crossing of the Royal Road following today’s Egnatia street with the Parade road connecting the place with Rotunda. It was build by Caesar Galerius along with his palace to tell the story of his victories against Sassanides Persians. In time, the original 4-arch building was destroyed keeping only one part of its western front with half of the central arch and one smaller arch. Today it is a well- known monument called Kamara. With Kamara being the standard meeting point for parties who want to go out for coffee in Thessaloniki. “Let’s meet at Kamara”, is a common phrase among students and young citizens who have an afternoon rendez-vous there, so as to descend their way to the popular cafes and bars in the center of Thessaloniki. The 4-arch building had two similar fronts with two big central arches and two smaller adjacent ones. The spaces between the central arches was covered with a dome and the rest of the construction with double - sided roofs. Kamara is decorated with sculpted marbles narrating Galerius’ war achievements against the Persians.

Mind boggles at the age of this city. Not the oldest in the region by a long shot but so impressive that there are so many existing buildings and ruins. Following the straight line of the city grid it would have been a view to behold at the height of its glory.

Galerius was a Roman emperor from 305 to 311 .After his effective mission against the Persians in 299 AD,he picked Thessaloniki as one of the capitals of the province. The curve of Galerius is close to Rotunda, the Castle of Galerius, Octagon and Hippodrome (Galerius Royal residence Complex) , all should visit places. The curve commends the Roman Realm as a feature of Galerius' triumph over the Persian Sassanid lord. Close by you can discover numerous road food shops with tasty food. Else referred to just as 'Kamara', this is a central issue of Thessaloniki. This is important for a space of the town known for its imaginative, option and understudy vibe. It is a chronicled landmark, which individuals can additionally investigate, however it is likewise a beginning stage for different landmarks. Straight above it is the Rotonda and straightforwardly underneath is Navarinou square. This more extensive region is continually clamoring with life and it is loaded with extremely modest or free vacation destinations (galleries, similar to the mosaics in Navarinou), yet in addition extraordinary bistros, astonishing shops, alongside some incredible trinket shops as well. It merits halting at one of the more elective stone bistros here or in one of the tavernas. It likewise has many bus stations and most lines pass straightforwardly from that point or extremely close to it.

Impressive. A few steps away from the monument is the bus stop (bus X1, stop Kamara), which takes you to the terminus of the Macedonia Intercity International Bus Station. From the monument you can also get to the airport.

It's a very nice looking arch but its treated like nuisance by the locals with bikes, scooters, debris and even trash cans leaned on it.

South of the Rotunda was the triumphal arch which known today as “Kamara”, probably built by the city of Thessaloniki between 298 and 305 AD to commemorate Galerius’ victorious campaign against the Persians.

One of the most known touristic monuments in Thessaloniki. Its presence state that the entire city used to be a gigantic fortress for people inside but a gigantic fortress for enemies as well. It is located in the heart of Thessaloniki providing breathtaking photos to anyone who wanna learn what it was like back then. An amazing sighting , a well preserved one by the locals.

The detail in the stone carvings are incredible. We sat in the corner cafe to rest our weary feet as we imagined how life was like back in ancient times where the arch was connected by massive columns to the Rotunda. Sadly all columns no longer stand except for the remaining arch surrounded by drab modern bldgs.

A great place to look at while taking a walk or hanging around. It's free and very beautiful although you can only see it from above cause you're not allowed to enter cause it's historical and under preservation.

I thought the was a very cool thing to see. I just kept thinking how it would have actually looked if the whole structure still stood today.

A place with a lot of history which now lies right next to the road, probably not in the best of shape. A lot of pigeon feeders exist nearby and the area looks extremely unkempt, sadly so for an arch with such historical value. Just for the history buffs, the arch was built to celebrate Roman victory over the Persians in the late 3rd century AD.

The arch is a majestic monument depicting the victory of Galerius against the Persians. Emperor Galerius is associated with Serdica, which was his residence for a long time and from there he ruled the empire. It is said that his grave is located in today's Sofia. The stone bas-reliefs adorning the columns of the monument are arranged one above the other in four belts. They are separated from each other by colorful garlands. It was built in the 300s. The arch was part of the fortress wall surrounding the entire city. On these days, it is one of the most popular places in Thessaloniki for locals, where they organize meetings, as well as for tourists. Near it there is a beautiful park with lots of greenery.

Can’t believe this open air piece of history that you can just stumble upon while walking around. The arch has been there since the 4th century and has detailed engravings of that time. Wish there was a sign describing what the engravings mean because they seem to depict war scenes. Unfortunately because it is open to the elements, part of the engravings are already fading.

The Arch of Galerius, known as Kamara, is located in the eastern part of the historical center of Thessaloniki, between the Rotunda and the Palace of Galerius, at the height of Egnatia Street. It was built at the beginning of the 4th century AD after the important victory of Galerius against the Persians in 296-7 AD. This victory of Galerius is the main theme of the relief decoration. The Kamara together with the Rotunda formed part of the palace complex of Galerius. Beneath this impressive construction, Egnatia Street met another major street of that time. This area is very popular to Thessaloniki, especially to students, as a meeting point.

It's a cool spot, really accessible. Just walk over the white tower and you are there. You can see a great church near the arch. There is nothing much to do in the area but you can walk over there just see the arch.

Cool spot, very accessible. Wish they had more signage explaining what the arch is about and when it was built, however I think that if they did that then they would have too many tourist blocking side walk

I recently visited Kamara, also known as the Arch of Galerius, in Thessaloniki and was blown away by its impressive architecture and rich history. The arch is a beautiful structure that has stood the test of time and serves as a great reminder of the city's ancient past. The intricate carvings and detailed designs on the arch are a sight to behold and I spent quite some time just admiring them. Apart from the visual appeal, Kamara also offers a great location to take a stroll and explore the city. It's centrally located and is surrounded by a bustling market, shops, cafes, and restaurants. The atmosphere around the arch is vibrant and lively, making it a great spot to spend a leisurely afternoon. It is also a meeting spot for locals surrounded by coffee shops and fast food options. I highly recommend a visit to Kamara if you're in Thessaloniki. It's a beautiful, historic landmark that offers a great glimpse into the city's past, and is also a great spot to soak in the local culture and atmosphere

The adjenct Street below is noisy, there are no banches, the history of the arch can be understood from an old dirty plank. And the fance around the pillars , with metal arows, is sublime. The arch is somehow interesting, but it needs a better medium for conservation.

Thessaloniki's students meeting point. Looks better in historical pictures before they destroy part of it to create the street, but still an important place of the city

Spectacular monument created by a little-known emperor (in the West). Could do with better information panels, but our guidebook (Bradt) provided the necessary details.

Really nice monument. Not much to see, but a focus point for meeting people. Just watch out for the birds sitting on it and pooping on the people below.

A great monument created after the Roman emperor won the Persian army in 305 a.C. Now is the most famous place in the center of Thessaloniki as a meeting spot 🌟🙂.

The ultimate meeting point of all who reside in the city of Thessaloniki and gathering/starting place for demonstrations. The arch of Galerius (Kamara for the Greek speaking) is one of the most iconic and famous landmarks of the city which everyone should visit.

Interesting how they preserved the ruins of Galerius' palace, combining old in the middle of the city.

Arch itself is amazing, detailed and full of history. The surrounding area however, is questionable.
