I was very disappointed. Our first indication of problems was the sticky tables. Could not place your arms or phone on the table without peeling them off, was also awkward for picking up your glass and napkin. When asked why table so sticky, he said because of varnish. Well that is a big problem. Next we ordered a few starters and some sake. The dumplings, tasted undercooked, but did have a nice flavor. The beef, underwhelming, no flavor, lack of sauce, raw beef taste. I have had this dish many times and loved it. We got raw Salmon sushi, instead of sashimi, but I admit that was our mistake. But the girl said a lot of people make this mistake. So if common mistake, should the server say do you want sushi or sashimi? Hot Sake - we were really looking forward to this, we ordered the most expensive one. But it never came. No one checked on us. I think 2 tables, 3 servers…. We got up to pay and no one cleared our table. This restaurant has real potential, it felt cozy. But there is no restaurant without good service and non sticky tables. If you can not deliver what is ordered you 1. Lose sales 2. Lose customers.

I ordered Miso soup and Squid Katsu. I really loved the Miso but the wasn't very tasty or well crumbed. How ever the waitresses were friendly and the food came out really quickly.

Food was great, but the place was cold, so we left our coats on. Toilet and washhand basin looked like it hadnt been cleaned in a while, which isnt a good look. Makes you wonder what the kitchen is like! Shame really

Did the premium buffet type meal. Well worth it, great value for money and the food was delicious. Good being able to try a variety of different things.

Horrible service. We will not be coming back. I wish the old staff were still in-charge. 1. The new waitresses were lazy and unfriendly. One staff was just standing in the reception area while we were waiting for them to get our second round of order. We have to go to them to submit the form containing our orders. 2. Also, they never completed our orders. 3. We booked but they claimed that we didn't.

The place was packed at 6pm on a Saturday night, even in these covid times so that was a good sign. We had the $42 banquet and there were plenty of good options for vegetarians. You filled in a card on what you wanted to eat next and they brought it to your table. Service was very quick and the staff super friendly. Food was good, we left feeling full and pretty happy.

Had premium buffet tonight, very good service. Food were good, more on the salty end. Service were good and fast! For Teppan range, I ended up asking for sauce-less, felt like the sauce is a bit heavy and covered the original taste of the food. Unfortunately, baby octopus and oysters were not available. Strongly recommend tofu salad to start with, with smooth. Also definitely recommend for meat lovers!

Koji Teppanyaki & Grill is a Japanese-style restaurant located in Timaru, New Zealand, that specializes in teppanyaki and grill dishes, including BBQ. The restaurant offers a variety of meats, seafood, and vegetables cooked on a teppan grill, as well as sushi, sashimi, and other Japanese dishes. Went there first time. Met with two young grumpy waitresses that didn't bother serving us. Instead just stood by the counter and played with their phones. The chef had to come out and take care of us. We ask the grumpies at check out, about what they do to the leftovers. They said "Just order whatever you want! Then just chuck out whatever is leftover!". Seriously? Went there again second time. They have redeemed themselves. The grumpies were gone. The food was amazing, the service was quick, and the staff was very friendly and motivated.

Stumbled upon this place not realising that it was a buffet style. What excellent value for money. The food was great quality and the staff very helpful. I am sorry I ordered too much though. Don’t be greedy like us. Thanks for a great meal.

Staff was friendly, unfortunately one of them lied to us about the drinks. We ordered 2 green tea (which is standard in a Japanese restaurant) and received 2 peppermint teas. Personally I don't like peppermint tea so I asked the staff if I could get the green tea I ordered and got told it would be "a special Japanese green tea with mint". The Lipton tea bag just said peppermint tea, and I'm not stupid. I know it's just a drink but you don't lie to a customer to sell things, simple as that. Food was nice and very quick, only thing we didn't like that they use the exact same sauce on all the teppan meals and others which was a bit too much. We had better experiences in restaurants like that in the past so unfortunately we wouldn't come back...

Went for a work dinner. The food was delicious and had a great variety! We also ordered almost every cocktail on the menu, I highly recommend the melon wine! I booked via telephone with no problem and also had no trouble calling a few days before when a couple of people canceled. My only issues were that it was quite loud (then again, we were the largest party in the restaurant with everyone chatting) and the food did initially take a little while to arrive. Thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant overall, and will definitely be booking again!

So much wasted potential. Let me say first up the food was great, it really was. Beyond that were let downs that stop me going back. Firstly the table, floor and menus were all sticky. I just don't want that at a restaurant. They seemed busy, but the staff that met us struggled to explain their version and pricing for teppanyaki. It's NOT at the hot plate. More like tappas coming to you your table. It's buffet. I still don't understand it, and we certainly couldn't eat the full amount allowed. Maybe some people like that. We were told the children, x2 for us (3 adults), were not full price. Instead of $45 they would be $20-30. We got charged full price for both of them and my daughter only ate some sushi and dumplings. It simply want value for our family. We liked the food, but the experience, pricing and atmosphere ruined it sadly.

It was an impromptu trip to Timaru for my husband's birthday. We drive around and found this place. The staff were lovely although it took a while to understand that dinner was only buffet style. Being called a Teppanyaki and grill place, you would think that you will be treated to a meal with some entertainment. But no, take note that it's a menu selection that you can choose whatever you like on the menu. Interesting concept. It's good if you go in a group and get to try all the dishes on the menu! The restaurant was spacious. Unfortunately, the floors and tables are sticky. Some of their menus needed to be cleaned too as it was sticky. The lights in the ladies toilet was out..I couldn't even see a lightbulb in the ceiling. Aside from the atmosphere. The food is surprisingly good. We ordered most things on the menu to try. And all were good. Just the teppan pork was slightly chewy and the beef takaki was not thinly sliced enough, so slightly chewy too. Overall, food 4 stars and the service was lovely which gives it 5. It's unfortunate, that the atmosphere makes it hard to enjoy it fully. ##Amended Add on##: It was really disappointing that we found out when we got home that our two kids were charged full price, even though we were told that both of them were half price. We don't always scrutinize the bills as we often trust the restaurant to be vigilant with their charging. Since it was a head count of 3 adults and 2 kids. We didn't think we need to doubt their charging. Again, disappointing. Especially when it was a birthday celebration. I've revised the service rating down slightly.

My second review on koji but this time I was so happy with our meals and service. There use to be a real unpleasant lady server there but the new one was amazing. Things look cleaner too.

Tasty n cheap based on the quality n the price, it is good as you can get. General basic limited options of foods, not like traditional JP food. 😁👍

What a fabulous restaurant. My husband and I got the $42 buffet which had more than enough selection for us both. The food was delicious and came out quickly. Staff were friendly.

A amazing meal. I suggest the $55 meal You get as many small share tuppas as you like. Great for trying new foods. Presentation is great and the food flows well with a few beers. Three of my mates and me had 45 serves. Totally worth going for a meal. Fast service.
