We text through a reservation with these guys on Monday. We didn’t hear anything back so Hubby rang on Tuesday to make sure we actually had a booking as we had booked a babysitter for Saturday but still unable to make any sort of contact… We finally get a phone call today (Friday) saying they can’t book us in for our preferred time so totally screwing up our once in a blue moon dinner outing together. Very disappointing…

Best steak I have had anywhere. If you enjoy and appreciate excellent steak this place is a must visit. Be warned, however, their wine prices are frightening.

Food is superb. Friendly service with nice warm fire going. Would definitely go back. I had the duck and the Rhubarb brulee for desert. Wine was very nice. Price on a par with other places.

My partner declared the fillet steak as the best he had ever tasted. As a vegetarian, I was delighted by the thoughtfully crafted vegetarian course. The combination of flavours was nothing short of outstanding, and I congratulate the chef's skill and attention to detail. During our visit, a single individual carried the entire service, including a large group in a private room, and did a wonderful job. What makes Steak@CustomsHouse even more remarkable is its location in Timaru, a charming coastal city in New Zealand. It proves that exceptional dining experiences can be found in unexpected places.

Probably my new favorite steakhouse in NZ so far, every is just right, the location and ambiance are impeccable, food id great, the meat is perfect cooked to our liking, super tender, juicy and delicious, the truffle mushroom appetizer and truffle potato are particularly unforgettable, the highlight, however, is the exquisite service, our waiting staff is unbelievably polite, professional, knowledgeable and classy, like everything else in this restaurant, which is sadly so hard to come across these days. I will most definitely be back to Timaru just for the place. Do make reservation or check their availability ahead to avoid any disappointment, which happens often.

amazing food,steak cooked perfect,dont normally have pudding but seen one come out so decided to treat myself to a creme brulee and was blown away at how good every component on the plate was,would highly recommend!!

We have experienced the steak house a number of times with friends. Food always superb, atmosphere great for a group or as a couple. Service great with lots of humor. Highly recommended.

The steak, a sublime showcase of flavor and texture, was prepared to perfection, each bite an echo of artisan skill. The sauces, particularly the Paris de beurre and the piquant blue cheese, were crafted with a precision that elevated the dish to a symphony of taste. Though the portions were generous, a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to a fulsome experience, it is with keen anticipation that one would save room for the dessert, which promises to be another extraordinary indulgence. Five stars, unequivocally deserved.

A fantastic experience and probably the best steak I have had anywhere. Great service from a very attentive and professional front of house guy. The whole thing was just perfect and great value considering the outstanding quality of food.

Steak over cooked but rest of the meal was fine. Decor was in need of some tlc paint chipping off walls, wobbley chair legs, Hot tap in bathroom would not turn on. Service was fine!

10 of us, from around the Sth Island, got together for my wife's birthday last Saturday (25/3/23). The food was superb "best meal I have ever had", "can't remember when I had such a good meal", " great steak, cooked perfectly", "the red wine jus was tasty and I asked for more", "this fish is to die for". These were some of the comments expressed. Everyone was pleased with their meal and dessert and couldn't believe that Timaru had a restaurant of this class. (My wife and I live in Timaru so have eaten there a number of times and never been disappointed). Bravo Steak @ Customs House

Enjoyed a fabulous evening here (Wed 22/03). We were visiting from the Manawatu and were very impressed with the service and the meals. The Lamb Cigars were something else - very yummy. The choices of steaks, potato sides and sauces gave plenty of choice. Thank you to the waiter - you were great and a shout out to the chef - we were very satisfied customers and will definitely earmark this restaurant for a return visit, the next time we are down this way.

Fantastic food. Los of steak of course, but delicious other options. Great wine list, impeccable fit out and knowledgeable, attentive service.

It is one of the top steak restaurants we have been to. Not sure how many front of staff they normally have but it was just the maître d' on tonight, but he still managed to provide top service without any excessive delays (we have been to many other restaurants with more staff and longer waits). And the food was worth it.

I had Greenstone ribeye and it was beautiful. Not cheap but it is value for money for premium cut. 300 grams made me full enough. Duck fat fries also really nice.

The best steak I have enjoyed bar none. Had the Wakanui and it was superb.

I remembered half way through the Steak, that I should take a photo of it. That didn't happen, so I can only describe it. The mushroom sauce on the side was a delightfully tasty addition with the garlic butter. As a consolation prize, the chocolate dessert pictured was well worth it.

One of the best steaks I have had for sometime. Delicious, appropriately medium to well done and extremely juicy. (Most places just make it well done when u order medium to wellish) Service was a little slow but worth the wait. 68$ with a drink and a dessert. Dessert was not worth 15$ though.. probably skip the dessert ..
