If
you
are
a
young
backpacker—especially
if
you
are
are
young
backpacker
who
likes
to
party:
you
might
enjoy
this
place,
But
for
me,
a
middle
aged
person
with
asthma
who
arrived
after
a
14
hour
transpacific
flight
to
attend
an
academic
conference,
it
was
a
disaster.
I
expected
some
sort
of
hotel;
that
it
is
a
hostel
was
not
made
clear
on
booking.com.
1)
the
location
is
great
in
some
ways…
close
to
downtown,
to
universities,
to
great
cafes…
…but…it
is
a
party
street.
The
stench
of
cigarettes
and
pot
is
inescapable.
It
is
so
noisy
as
to
make
it
impossible
to
sleep.
On
Saturday,
deafening
bar
chatter
till
3-4
am.
Motorcycles
roaring
through.
Drug
addicts
congregating
at
the
corner
and
talking
very
very
loudly.
2)
the
single
room
does
not
lock
from
the
inside.
Nor
the
balcony.
Did
have
a
beautiful
view,
though.
3)
a
staff
member
opened
the
door
while
I
was
inside,
without
even
knocking.
4)
the
hotel
has
a
no
smoking
policy,
which
I
assume
extends
to
weed.
Not
enforced.
Smoke
pours
in
through
the
balcony,
and
fills
the
hall.
5)
if
you
have
luggage,
beware:
no
elevator.
6)
I’ve
been
in
shared-bathroom
facilities
where
the
bathrooms
and
shower
rooms
felt
safe
—
in
NYc,
and
with
a
lower
nightly
fee…
This
did
not
feel
safe.
The
bathroom
was
derelict.
7)
there
is
not
even
a
washbasin
in
the
room.
There
are
no
cups,
8)
the
tv
did
not
work,
or
had
no
instructions.
Nor
the
air—con.
9)
no
attempt
was
made
to
consistently
enforce
covid
protocols.
Staff
went
massless,
as
did
guests…
10)
each
floor
had
a
locking
door…
but
guests—one
hopes,
guests
—circumvented
it
again
and
again
by
putting
a
wad
of
toilet
paper
in
the
indentation
on
the
faceplate..
11)
LGBQt
friendly,
yes;
would
an
LGBQt
person
feel
safe?
there
were
no
private,
non
gendered
bathrooms…
12)
one
morning,
as
I
left
the
building,
there
was
a
fire
truck
and
police
cars.
Someone
had
apparently
set
a
box
of
pigeons
on
fires.
13)
while
they
do
put
tags
on
your
bags
when
stowing
them
before
check
in,
they
don’t
give
you
a
receipt
or
even
remove
the
tags.
So
basically,
if
you
are
into
the
crazy
young
backpacking
scene,
this
is
the
place
for
you.
If
you
can’t
afford
more,
then,
well..
it
is
what
it
is.
If
you
rest,
quiet,
cleanliness,
fresh
air,
safety
matters
to
you,
but
you
think
you
might
save
a
bit,
then:
AVOID.
Find
a
real
hotel.
Or
AirBNB.
