Really nice old area in the old quarter of Marseille. It's really nice to visit but I wouldn't live here even if you paid me. Rats running around on the street at night, balcanic music coming from the houses, and even saw a burned down car here LOL. Definitely an interesting place!

(Translated by Google) The neighborhood to visit, a book in one hand, a camera in the other and eyes looking for treasures. La Vieille Charité is the old shelter for the city’s poor and beggars. Today it is a magnificent museum dedicated to Mediterranean archeology and to African, Oceanian and Amerindian arts (M.A.A.O.A). Admission is chargeable. It is the only place I believe after Paris which exhibits real reduced heads. The antique collections are magnificent. The Daviel Pavilion dates from the 18th century. It is the old courthouse in the city. Those condemned to death by guillotine were executed there. Below is the Town Hall, whose architecture is inspired by 17th century Genoese palaces. The neighborhood is also home to the Hôtel de Cabre and the Maison Diamantée, two of the city's oldest buildings that escaped the destruction ordered by German authorities during the Second World War. The Grand Rue is the oldest street in France. Place de Lenche is the ancient Greek agora. You will also see the Major Cathedral and its baroque style, the Hôtel-Dieu Intercontinental, an old hospital which welcomed the sick until the 1970s before becoming a Palace, the Saint Laurent church, the MUCEM, in short, so many walks and places to visit to immerse yourself in the history of Marseille with a capital H. (Original) Le quartier à visiter, un livre dans une main, un appareil photo dans l'autre et les yeux à la recherche de trésors.

(Translated by Google) It is a historic district of Marseille. It is also a place of Jean-Claude IZZO. For him, here, like the playground. He said, "Happiness is our natural state. This happiness is taken from us by 5 thieves: control, vanity, lust, consumption and comfort. Loved taking all these paths and finding beautiful street arts in each corner of Le Panier. It’s one of the most vibrant area of Marseille. Get some comfy shoes to walk around and specially because there are many stairs to be taken. Enjoy the little terraces, the cafes and croissants. This place was definitely one of my favorite in the city because of the strategic location

Interesting little place but be prepared for a climb up a hill or a set of stairs. Your choice! There are some neat shops at the top and some small cafes. You can pass through here on your way between city districts, so it's worth a visit.

Stayed in an AirB&B in la Panier and couldn't speak highly enough of it. Wide variety of restaurants and bars and many great indipendent shops hidden in beautiful streets! There is also loads of street art/graffiti which really added to its charm. Great area to visit if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the old port

A nice place to walk around. You have lots of small shops, and small things of other amenities of commerce. There are some nice graffiti all around, and very small quaint streets. And enjoyable walk.

Very beautiful area of Marseille. Charmant & old. The only thing that really bothered me is how people that live there can look to tourists. Some were catcalling & some were calling people (especially women) bad names. Be careful. Don’t walk here alone! Be careful when people come close to you: pickpocketing area!

Bohemian and artistic block located close to the vieux port of Marseille. Very charming and interesting to walk around. Streets are full of street art, cafés, restaurants, boutiques and historical places. There are squares with tables outside that allow you to sit and have food and/or drinks while enjoying the ambience. I hardly recommend to visit it when in Marseille. There are some free tours dedicated to explain the history of the place. The place has stairs, and streets go up and down making it not very friendly for wheelchair or baby cart.
