Canal Du Midi from Toulouse to Narbonne. By bike September 2019 This is a great experience and very physical intensive.but a lot of joy and a good way to strengthen your body. The first step from Toulouse to Castelnaudary it's quiet relaxed and the path on the side of Canal du Midi make it easy to get along. But you always hear the high way where the cars making there own sound but still you feel happy peddling along the old Allees beside the water. The following route to Carcassonne needed more Intension for the path it was paved with little stones, occasionally some roots and wholes make it difficult to bike fast. The third part till Narbonne was even more difficult and because of some tree disease they had to cut almost all the old trees and planted new once but this couldn't give you an enjoyable feeling. The good part was that the high way was to fare away to hear. Nevertheless the people you meet on the Canal Du Midi in Bike, Hiking or on a Boot are always very friendly and all in all take as much time you can to be able to explore the villages on the Canal try the good food and the great wine they produce in the area and look out that you have always enough water with you.

Get the opportunity to visit the canal du midi, either by boat, or by bike or in the car. Start in Castelnaudary and work your way towards the Med. Go now because in a few years it won't be so lovely as the trees are all having to be cut down because they are all infected. Such a tragedy. Visit in the spring, summer or autumn. It is beautiful and the skill of the builders is still breath taking. Read up the history of the canal before you visit.

Picturesque canal lined with trees. We cycled along it between Toulouse and Renneville and the cycle path was wide and well surfaced. There were a number of cafes and restaurants one could stop at

Quite disappointed cycling it. Single-track for a lot of it.

The Canal Du Midi runs from Toulouse almost to the Mediterranean, and is now a major tourist attraction in the South of France. A beautiful sight along its total length, with the iconic Plane Tree lining its banks, it could only be in France. Tragically the trees are being attacked and killed by an invasive fungus with no antidote, and almost the whole length of the canal is now affected, to the point that all the original trees are being removed and replaced by different varieties. Short term this has changed the appearance of the Canal dramatically, and longer term - maybe 20 years, there will be a different appearance again when these new trees reach maturity.

We did a week long Le Boat self drive trip on Canal du Midi with 2 other couples. A fabulous, enjoyable holiday. So good we followed up in later years with 3 more trips on different canals in France๐Ÿ˜€
