Highly recommended seafood haven in Volendam! This place has it all - the service, the atmosphere and the food combined! The owner gave us a private tour and showed us the smokers! This restaurant has laid its foundations several generations back and it is impressive how nature-cognitive they also are! For them, legal seafood does matter, they respect the seas and the fishing rules and seasons! The restaurant and the menu showcase freshness and expertise! Try the traditional Dutch eel dishes, absolutely outstanding, it directly melts in your mouth! Smit-Bokkum provides a quaint ambiance by the harbor, very charming place with attentive owners who love what they do! This spot should be a must-visit on your list!

I recently visited Smit Bokkum in Volendam and had a memorable dining experience. The restaurant's rustic ambience was charming, and the food, especially the smoked eels, was absolutely brilliant. The flavors were exquisite and authentic, truly showcasing the best of Dutch seafood cuisine. However, I must mention that my positive experience was slightly marred by the differential treatment we received as foreigners. This might be my assumption wholly but still worth mentioning I guess. We recognised that the restaurant was a bit busy but our service was noticeably delayed, and our requests for water were initially ignored, requiring multiple reminders. I feel it's important for any establishment to treat all customers equally and provide prompt and attentive service regardless of their nationality. I honestly hope it wasn't discrimination as I really loved this place and I hope others do too. Despite this issue, I believe Smit Bokkum is a fantastic place to experience traditional Dutch seafood dishes. The quality of their smoked eels and other offerings is top-notch, and the rustic ambiance adds to the overall charm of the restaurant. I hope that the staff can work on improving their service consistency to ensure a delightful experience for all patrons.

Great authentic place with history and incredible fish

We loved the smoker fish platter especially the herring and the eel. The salmon tartare is also special.

Excellent atmosphere and service. The smoked eel, salmon are truly great. Reasonable priced menu and easy to make reservation online. Friendly waiting staff we very patience explaing the food and making recommendations.

Very good experience. The fish is fresh, portions are not too small and not too pricy. We had one baked haddock and one fish soup. Highly recommended

Goodness gracious this was an amazing meal. Smoked seafood is the speciality here and if you don’t have any preferences, try the eel stew and the smoked herring. This place is popular with locals and rightly so

Excellent place, wonderful view and very good food.

Quite on the expensive side. But well worth it, the kibbeling are so good and pretty big. Staff are friendly and quick. We had a great time.

Excellent location on the water. Beautiful vew of the harbor. The waitstaff were kind, friendly and efficient. I had the fried cod which was... Perfect. It was the best piece of fried fish I've had in a long time. The frittes were also excellent. Double fried not too much oil and nice crunchy exterior. They also have a great apple pie for dessert. Coffee was OK 3.5 out of five stars.

Very pleasant lunch experience. You definitely have to try the eal soup! My second favorite was fish and chips and cheese cake with sour cherry ice-cream for desert. Service was good but slow.

Friends took us to this restaurant to try Dutch traditional herring and eel. Good atmosphere. Clientele seemed more local than touristy. They have menus in English if asked. We got seafood soup, fish and chips, a shrimp plate, eel plate, mixed fish plate and apple pie to share family style. All the fish dishes were incredibly fresh. My daughter LOVED the soup, eel and salmon, but the herring not so much. I was happy that she tried them! The smoked eel was naturally oily, in a good way and was delicious. The herring is cured and has a distinct fish taste. Glad to have tried it and would have again in the sampler platter.

Great place to eat and enjoy a afternoon with the family. Local fish, smoked eels prepared in many ways is delicious.

Great fish dishes served in a historic building, we loved seeing all the old photos of the fish industry on the walls. The food was excellent and it is nice that this restaurant is off the tourist map.

If you like fish, this is the place for you. Fish has been smoked here since 1856, until today. But you can also eat here excellent. It is not cheap, but the quality is worth the money. We enjoyed the evening.

Very good choice if you want to eat delicious fish in Volendam in peaceful location. It’s few minutes away from the bustling area of the town. The huge portion of fish and chips was very tasty. To be honest…the tartar sauce was the best in my life. Also fish of the day was perfect (super soft halibut in a creamy sauce). Everything 5/5

Location super! Sitting outside and enjoying the view is an experience in itself. Very good service, attention and courtesy to the customers. Very good food quality , fresh fish, good quality-price ratio considering how touristic is the place. I would recommend it as a peaceful stop before reaching the busy haven streets with all cafés and souvenirs shops, or why not after :)

I loved this place! Located in the beautiful village of Volendam which is a 10 minute drive from Edam. The food was really tasty. I had the salmon which is cured in house and tagliatelle which was delicious. Lovely views of the lake when you sit outside.

Excellent! A lot of specialities since almost 200 years. Smoked eel, smoked fish, great pasta, super deserts, great wines and language fluent & service driven staff! A++ Is there any downside to this place? Main dish costs between 16 and 22 euros.

Great restaurant. the terrace is simply amazing. beautifull views and quiet enviroment. recommended on sunny days. the food is very good. see pictures attached. my recommendation is the fish and ships and the salmon toasts. totally recommebded

Absolutely beautiful food! A lovely atmosphere. Friendly staff. They catered to my allergies. We were a large group and everyone enjoyed their meals. The fish is smoked on sight, which was lovely to hear about. I would return to Volendam just to come back here. Highly recommended

This restaurant is 165 years old located near marina. Beautiful country side. Fish & chips is very very nice. The smoked eel is another speciality of this family owned restaurant. The current owner took the pleasure of showing us the smoking process which has been in their tradition for 5 generations.

The location is great, if the weather is good (like today) you can eat outside where the terrace leads out to the harbour. You see all the boats and cruisers sailing in and out. The food is amazing too, you definitely have to go there. Today was my first time and we certainly are going back. I will post up pictures of the dishes we all had.

Lovely spot, delicious food and friendly service. We were very happy to find this quiet spot where they serve local fish specialties. Will definitely come back and recommend to friends !
