It's got to be one of the must see attractions in the country. Now self guiding it misses something from the times when there were guided tours but it is just a wonderful place to visit. Limos a bit sorry for itself at the moment but it's vital that it's maintained and surprisingly it doesn't detract from a visit a great deal.

No visit to the Dockyard is complete without boarding the Victory. Really well presented, with an audio guide plus human guides strategically placed. The Victory museum and gallery opposite adds to the experience. Views of the ship will be obscured for some time from June 2022, as they had just begun to construct scaffolding around it for essential external works.

Victory is undergoing a twenty year conservation project so at the moment she's not looking her best but don't be disappointed you can still get on board and have a look below decks, in Hardy's and Nelson's quarters and on deck some under cover some not nearer the bow, you can also pick up an audio guide to take round with you, just be aware steps are steep and ceilings are low at 5ft I just about scraped under without having to duck, if your interested in finding out what they are doing to her walk around the other side to the ship entrance to check out victory live

I was not particularly excited to go to this, was a treat for my husband's birthday. However, when we got there, I realised how much interesting history and how well done the exhibits were. We also saw the Alliance submarine and HMS Warrior. We really want to go back (got tickets that are good for 1 year) and do another weekend to see the rest of it. Incredible and totally worth it! If you're on the fence, definitely go - really enjoyable, especially if you like history.

Visited on a late February Sunday and there were no crowds. It's a beautifully preserved and presented piece of iconic British history. Entrance included the adjacent Victory museum making it even better value. The members of staff are very helpful and knowledgeable.

What an impressing Monument! The various decks are so crammed it feels like crawling. imagine THAT amongst all these stinking sweating bodies it must have been swimming hell. Now imagine the lesser ships ...did they use wooden cannons? (See pic)

We have 12 month tickets for Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. This was a re-visit with a focus on HMS Victory. It was a Wednesday, circa 11:00am in February. Great news, very quiet and we finished the tour before the school trips arrived. Truly excellent experience. A MUST :- NB you are offered a handset on a lanyard as part of the price of entry DO take it. So simple point it at the markers and hold to your ear. No messing no fiddling. Very instructive and informative. TOP 10 UK attraction for sure.

At time of visit (January 2024) the ship was covered in scaffolding....but could still go inside and have a guided tour on all the decks with background history on battle of Trafalgar, plus a tour of the hull. My only criticism is that it was not possible to buy a postcard of Nelson in any of the onsite souvenir shops. I wonder if Nelson has been cancelled here?

Great ship with a great story. Audio guide highly recommended - it takes you through the events leading up to Trafalgar, the battle on the day and the aftermath. Keep an eye out for the small audio guide signs. It’s easy to miss then below decks.

Feel privileged that this magnificent vessel is being restored to her glorious best. This ship played a huge part of Britain's history along with the men who fought in her. The staff who take the tours are very knowledgeable.

My favourite historical ship! I've been visiting the HMS Victory for last 10 years, each year! I am impressed with the long therm restauration project in place to preserve for future generation this magnificent ship of the line from Georgian Era I cannot wait to see the ship on its full majestic view once the new masts will be put in place( unfortunately the whole work will be finished, I've been told not earlier then 2032) I highly recommend to visit HMS Victory!

Really fascinating, enjoyed walking inside the ship itself and the guides on board were really lovely and shared great info about the ship and Nelson. Also really interesting to see and hear about the renovation project its undergoing.

There is currently scaffolding on this ship which will be there for another 10 years. Nonetheless, it's an amazing visit. You can go inside all the levels of an 18th century ship!

Brilliant. Even though the ship was under restoration and covered, there was still plenty to see inside and underneath. When you get through the ticket desk next to the ship, make sure you borrow the portable information speakers. These were excellent and not only provided lots of interesting information about the ship and its history but also gave narration of a piece of history, emotion & ambience to the tour. I found myself eagerly seeking out the next 'click' point to get the next piece of the story. My whole family (mother, wife, son (12) & daughter (15) absolutely loved it. We will be back soon to use our Explorer ticket & see more of the dock yard sites. I didn't take any pictures during the tour as I was too busy enjoying it!!

Simply spine-tingling to walk the deck of Nelson's flagship and stand where the great man fell. The audio guide provides a great balance of factual information and atmosphere. We're not particularly into maritime matters but this was terrific.

Great attraction. Worth a visit. At the moment it's having a lot of work done on the exterior. It does have an affect on the experience but the work is completely necessary. They have a audio "experience" that pretty much talks about the journey that lord Nelson had sailing to meet the Spanish armada from start to finish. I will say look around the amount of people who was paying no attention to there surroundings because the where wrapped up in the story.

One of a kind experience and ship. Unique to see the keel and rudder from the drydock floor. A decades long restoration project underway. Original furniture in some areas. Helpful staff to teach you about the history..

Beautiful ship with lots of history. I recommend doing all attractions to get your values worth. These photos are a combination of HMS Victory and Warrior.

It's fascinating to see this incredible piece of history, and it's beautifully presented with an optional audio guide that I recommend for taking you on an immersive tour of the Battle of Trafalgar and what life on board would have been like. The Victory is currently undergoing a major renovation project that takes away a lot of the external views, but the inside of the ship is still open.

Wow! The audio commentary really brought this historic ship to life, telling the impressive story of the battle of Trafalgar and Nelson's demise. It's extremely well preserved and well presented, but is currently undergoing some restoration work. As a historic ship, it's not suitable for anyone who has difficulty with steps. It is also important to realise that in some places, headroom is very low. Expect to bang your head! But it's absolutely worth it.

As part of our return visit on our Ultimate Explorer ticket we spent our time exploring HMS Victory. Well worth discovering this piece of British maritime history. Audio guide is very helpful and doesn't distract from everything to see. Had the option also of seeing some of the restoration close up as part of the Restoration Live exhibit.

The exhibition will be under maintenance for quite some time. Simon our tour guide was exceptional. He was extremely knowledgeable and always open to questions. It was good going during off peak, it felt like a more personalised experience.

Incredible visit with exceptional audio details to complement the visual experience. Very informative signage detailing the restoration work and history of the ship.

It's covered in scaffolding but didn't spoil the visit. It's 15 years refurbishment. Bank Holiday weekend but no queues at 10am in the morning. Great audio of the story of Trafalgar battle, nearly 2hrs on board.

The victory is undergoing major repair work. This is not stated when booking tickets.. you don't get to see her in all her glory. There is lots to see so and so and for the ultimate ticket well worth a full day if not more.. you get to use your ticket up to a year . Unfortunately the boat ride was of due to weather and we were going to drive to Gosport on the monday to do sub due to this..but it doesn't open until Wednesday ..so we have lost this part of the trip which I'm a bit annoyed at as again we weren't told it only opened in certain days or we may have skipped victory and warrier to drive round and then return Monday to do those.. it's a 500ml drive for us to return so not really viable unless I get back within the year . Well worth a visit though. The Mary Rose is and always will be my favourite and was my young grandaughters as well..

It was amazing to see the HMS Victory. It's so old. To stand in it and see all that history up close was a fun experience. Lots of knowledgeable guides were around as well to really piece together what it was like for the sailors who served on board hundreds of years ago.

Currently under conservation with only 8 years to go out of 20. While she's not at her full glory the HMS Victory is a truly amazing ship. Experiencing the claustrophobic gun decks and walking through the captain's private quarters was a highlight. We can't wait to see her fully decked out in years to come. A must see!!

Victory is part of the Historic Dockyard. You can purchase various tickets for the attractions (see website) We did not go on board this visit and the Ship is still open to the public whilst undergoing restoration to the outer cladding. In fact we found the pop up tour of the restoration work "Victory Live" more interesting than previous visits as the visitor is able to get up close to the construction of the ship which is not quite how we had imagined. We would say don't be put off by the cladding and the iconic rear of the ship is still visible as at May 2023

We loved our visit to HMS Victory, flagship of the British Navy. Built in 1765, the ship is displayed as it was in 1805 when it was Admiral Nelson's ship at the Battle of Trafalgar. The cost of the visit includes a free audio guide that takes you through the battle from the initial engagement to the death of Nelson explaining the daily life of the ship's crew. The ship is currently undergoing repair but it does not detract from the visit. The stairs between the decks are steep and may not be accessible for some and the lighting is quite dim with low beams that need to be avoided. We look forward to visiting it again as there is so much to see and learn about.

A real step back in time. The ship is amazing and the audio tour gave an excellent insight into the hardships experienced on ship especially during battle. You visit the whole ship, 5/6 decks from the top deck right into the bowels of the ship. A great experience!

There is not enough words to describe how I felt on the HMS Victory. The history that was in this ship, Nelson's bed, Hardy's cot and so much more. The guides around the ship gave so much information. I learned a lot. I enjoyed the hours I spent going from deck to deck. Almost the whole ship was accessible to visit.

  • 5/5 Alessandra D. 1 year ago on Google
A must see attraction. The ship is going under renovation, but you can still visit it. Take an audio guide to help you understand the history of the boat and its glorious times. You will walk into the past, see where Nelson slept, planned the battles, ate and eventually fell and died. There are many stairs to climb. Some are quite steep. Lighting is not great inside. Overall it’s definitely an experience not to be missed.

  • 5/5 Polly W. 1 year ago on Google
Simply amazing. Currently surrounded by scaffolding, so the outside isn't really visible, but, wow, the inside is fabulous. I would recommend the portable gadget for hearing the stories, listening to the historical information, you can pick and choose what you listen too. The tour takes in several floors, easy to get around, some of the steps are a little steep, but there's hand rails, and we found no-one was in a rush. So much to see, everywhere is absolutely immaculate, and guides on each floor are well informed and friendly. Worth every penny of the admission charge ... and Nelson did, apparently, say "kiss me Hardy" !!!

It was a fantastic day out visiting Victory. History in the making. Not very good if you have a back disorder or are over 5'10. As you go down in the ship the height space gets smaller and darker. Also very steep stairs, but lots of rope and handles to hold. However audio available free of charge.

  • 5/5 Michael S. 2 years ago on Google
HMS Victory is a fascinating and moving look into UK naval history- the audio guide is comprehensive and you learn a lot as you go around the ship, but the real thrill is the chance to stand on the decks where Trafalgar and many other battles were actually fought. Strongly recommend for all ages, but watch out for the low ceilings on board- most adults will need to duck and crouch
