Super cool building. I am not Orthodox, but I do appreciate architecture. The paint job is a little weird but the parabolic motif is really wonderful, as is the stained glass, especially in the early morning inside the church. Everyone was also very friendly here. Do drop by for fifteen minutes and take in the color and serenity.

A blessed sanctuary to spend some time in prayer and re-live your Gratitude to the Ever loving Almighty Creator. This church is a beautiful experience yet to be enjoyed by most of my fellow brethren. A divine and peaceful space with beautiful ambience to spend some time in prayer in the presence of Holy Relics of blessed Saints. A Church with a great history and character. Rebuilt Church made of Clay looks beautiful, and the Architecture of the church is beyond description. Visit atleast once in your life time.

A place with huge historical significance, surroundings maintained very well. A good place for meditation, prayer and to know about Syriac orthodoxy in India. The history of Syrian Christians in Kerala and their struggle to keep their faith is ignored by the mainstream media and government. There are a number of Syrian Orthodox churches in Kerala which dates back to the first century AD, these churches should be included in the tourism circuit and its history should be taught to student community who studies about evolution of present day Kerala.

This church is a symbolic remembrance of the shared history of the Syrian Christians of Kerala. A revolt against European hegemony over interpretations and symbols, as much as over ownership. Some 200 years before Indians woke up in North India in 1857 and claimed that to be the first war of Indian independence.

St George Orthodox Koonan Kurishu Old Syrian Church I had an enclosure to this blessed place couple years back. I've always adored places of worship and their architecture. This very church is a blessed sanctuary to be and to have a calm , quality time in prayer and reconnect with God Almighty in our busy schedule of life. The church is mostly equipped with Respected Rev. Benjamin and couple brothers who are always ready to give us ample awareness about historical relevance of the church and to support us in prayers. With the knowledge shared to me - the church has relics of blessed saints. This is the exact place where the "Koonan Kurishu Sathyam" or "The Leaning Cross Oath" had been taken by Malankara Christians in AD 1653 against the foreign invasion. The church was later rebuilt is made out of clay and environmental friendly objects which gives architecture a special touch. Do accompany your friends to this blessed place if you want to have a quality time to pray away from noisy and crowded life schedules. Location : Pullupalam road, near Lobo Jn. Mattanchery Usual timing : 6am - 9:35 pm Holy Mass : Friday (6:30 am) and on Alternate Sundays

The Coonan Cross Oath (Koonan Kurissu Sathyam) which was a turning point in the case of the Christians, who held Angamaly as their headquarters, is considered to be a reaction to the Synod of Diamper. At a meeting held at Alangad on May 22, 1653, one faction swore that they would not accept Francis Garcia Metropolitan.

This is the real church where the Oath of Crooked Cross(Coonan Kurish Sathyam) took place. There is a catholic church in Mattanchery claiming they are the real Coonan Cross church, but if Coonan Kurish Church was done against Catholicism, Pope and the Portuguese how is that the real Church. This is the Real Church. The Church is a very Spiritual Place. It is a shrine of St. George and has a small piece of bone of his.✝️

This is the only one church having the holy relics of St George kept here in AD 1750. It also received national Architectural award based on egyptian style made of mud and sand only. The St. George Orthodox Koonan Kurish Old Syrian Church situated in Mattancherry, Kochi is a deeply spiritual place that exudes a sense of ancient sanctity and reverence. Nestled amidst serene surroundings, the church stands as a testament to the rich cultural and religious heritage of the Syrian Orthodox community. The church was constructed at the site of the historic Leaning Cross Oath (Koonan Kurish Sathyam) by Bishop Shakrulla Mar Baselios a Syriac Orthodox Bishop in AD 1751. It was an honor and a great privilege to visit the Coonan Cross also known as the great Oath of bent cross. It was the decisive movement in Malankara church History. The Coonan Cross was the reaction of the Thomas Christian in response to the killing of patriach Ahatalla by the Portuguese. The Jesuit wants to latinize the local churches since the Portuguese did not accept the legitimacy of ecclesiastical traditions. The Coonan Cross event happened in 1653 in Mattanchery, Kochi. The church did not submit to the Catholic hierarchy. The Coonan Cross was restored and reconstructed which was damaged due to its bending position. We could also witness the sacred relics of St. George which was kept there. The chant and prayer can be heard continuously. The church is open for the devotees and the visitors all the time.

We were amazed to see this beautiful Christian Orthodox Church. We are baptised Easter Orthodox Christians, but we have never expected to see an Eastern Orthodox church that far east. The Church is beautiful, peaceful and very spiritual. We encourage anyone to pay a visit to this hidden gem in Fort Kochi. The tuc-tuck drivers will not even suggest this in their itinerary, but they should, it is probably the one the highlight of our stay in Fort Kochi. The Church building is so different than the orthodox churches in Greece and Eastern Europe; We considered ourselves lucky to have visited this place.
