A nice city walk and the historical gas/steam clock built in 1977, this well-known, antique-style clock is powered by steam & whistles to tell the time. There are so many souvenir shops on the main street and good restaurants around. Canada palace is just 3 minutes walk with a beautiful sea view.

It's a nice place to take pictures if you're visiting Vancouver or just live here. The whole street is very beautiful and has tons of food options. If you like Italian, you must try Old Spaghetti Factory - Do reserve your table beforehand.

Visited in June 2022 with my family. A very pleasant place to walk. Historical. Well conserved and restored. The historical steam clock in particular was a unique encounter for me. I have not seen one before. It hoots and releases steam on the hour (I think).

This was a real treat to see. Nothing super spectacular, but there are six other working “steam” clocks in the entire world. So it’s certainly a cool attraction to see. Every 15 minutes, the steam clock five whistles, whistle and shoots steam and every hour it makes a toot from each whistle. The area in Gastown can be a little rough/sketchy, however there are enough tourists and visitors, you shouldn’t be bothered. The area is pretty cool and you can walk up and down the strip, but the steam clock is the main attraction.

The steam comes out every certain time in a day. If you visit during winter, they have more people and you are gonna see even more steam and beautiful views. Summer time has better background and weather, however, you only stay for 5-10 minutes here, it is just have a remind we have a time period of steam. It is convenient to visit if you take sky train, and a few parking spots around. PS: when I took this photo, it is not the blooming time.

Fun to watch the steam coming out with chime! Such a busy place… lots of tourists waiting for their turns to take a photo! Many interesting eateries/ cafe/ stores nearby. Great place to take a stroll in a day but not exactly safe at night. Just helped a couple from us dealing with their rental car being broken into last week. Do not keep valuables in the car.

I read about this many years ago as a kid when I was just starting to learn English, I read it a newspaper that was delivered to our house every weekend and it always had a travel section. I remember being fascinated by it and the city of Vancouver. I'm glad I was able to see it irl. Definitely visit, it's a nice landmark and the neighborhood is also very nice. Good place to buy souvenirs too.

Great attraction, specially on a rainy winter day, grab a coffee and go on a stroll in history. Fantastic and effortless photography opportunity. Contrast of today(the modem buildings in the backdrop) and the clock (in focus) is a sight to see. Kids love this place too and won't stop reading the signs and history behind the be clock.

Loved Gastown! The clock is a must see for those of you that have never been! Plan and go there just before the next hour to hear it whistle and steam away!! Really cool. All kinds of lovely shops to browse and wander. Lots of nice places to eat and drink. Clock blows short whistles every 15 minutes and a longer one every hour.

Gastown is a great place to visit and this is a very cool landmark to stop by. The clock whistles every quarter of an hour and every hour it whistles longer. I enjoy the view whenever I get a chance. Great attraction, fantastic and excellent photography opportunity. Classic brick buildings, beautiful trees, cool restaurants and bars. Definitely a fun street to be walking around. Must visit in Vancouver.

Lovely and historical place. Kind of has that old town vibe. Loved walking on the street at night. I have added a few night photos, but the place was more beautiful in person. The area was very lively with people, shops, pubs etc

Beautiful old Town experience, you will love the walk specially in winters. Lots of small souvenir shops, indie art galleries and decor stores in Victorian buildings. A trendy food and drink scene includes chic cocktail lounges and restaurants serving everything from gourmet sandwiches to local seafood. Grab a coffee and walk the walk to enjoy the breathtaking experience.

Beautiful Steam Clock in Gas Town. Very nice area with lots to do. Streets are filled with nice shops and flowers. Good places to eat in Gas Town. We took the City Tour bus which was to me the best way to get around Vancouver and not have to look for parking. Parking can present a problem here. So much to do.

Love this quaint area with plenty of public parking, cobble stone streets, and great shops and restaurants to walk around and try! If you need souvenirs, this is the place to go! I have gotten a shirt here before and this time I found a nice sea green hat. There are many other things I was tempted to buy but had to hold myself back! Kitsune is a great restaurant cafe to stop by!

Nestled in the heart of Gastown, the Gastown Steam Clock features intricate designs and charming aesthetics. Even though it was erected in 1977, don't let the Victorian flair fool you! What sets this clock apart is its unique mechanism, powered by steam. Sure, it's not the only one in the world that does this, but it's still unique! Plus, on the hour, every hour, it gives you a chance to catch the rhythmic release of steam, giving off melodic chimes.

  • 4/5 Sollunaris 3 years ago on Google
Honestly, I thought the clock is very cool. But why in the hell is there a review for it? Like it doesnt serve food or drink, or is a vendor of any kind. I'd consider it 5 stars if it did. But its a steamy clock, enjoy I guess.

This is a very interesting monument located in the heart of Gastown. It was originally built in 1977 it runs on steam and it produces a puff of steam on its top every hour. If you want clear picture you need to be patient, the monument is usually crowded and maybe you can get a cool shot if you wait enough. Also, I would say early in the morning is the best time to try without having to face the crowd.

The rare steam clock in gastown is supposed to be the second steam clock in the world and one of the few to be still functioning. The clock whistles every quarter of an hour and at every hour it whistles longer. It’s worth the wait. I enjoy the view whenever I get a chance and you would have also seen this in many movies and series too.

Amazing steam engine powered clock in the downtown of Vancouver. It is a must place to visit. The clock announces times by blowing steam every 15 min. It is amazing to see it in action and read history of the clock that was running from 1977. Please be careful with parking. City is checking for cars all the time.

I grew up listening to the sound of an antique grandfather clock standing in the corner of the living room. It is still with my family, but its mechanism is getting too old that it gets fixed more than it actually works. It plays the same music as the steam clock, and it plays every 15 mins. When I lived in Vancouver, I didn’t think it matters. It is just a clock. It’s not as symbolic as Statue of Liberty nor the Golden Gate Bridge. It is small, insignificant and it’s singing is late at least 3 mins. But it feels different this time, while I became a visitor. The old steam clock is still the same, still late, but felt like an old friend.

Interesting and well maintained historical clock, which blows steam whistles on the quarter hour. On the hour, it gives a longer display. It can get very busy around the clock. My advice would be to go as early as you can if you want a good view.

Amusing and and interesting sight. Plays the Westminster chimes on the hour and every fifteen minutes. The chimes are on time but the hands are five minutes slow. If you want to take pics get to it about 8/9 o'clock to beat the walking tour crowds.

I wanted to share my delightful experience with the iconic steam clock in Vancouver. The charm and uniqueness of this local attraction left a lasting impression on me. The precision and artistry of the clock, combined with the hissing steam, create a truly enchanting atmosphere. It's a must-see for both locals and visitors alike. The attention to maintaining this historical gem reflects the pride and dedication of those responsible. Thank you for preserving and showcasing such a captivating piece of Vancouver's history. I highly recommend taking the time to enjoy this local treasure.

Great tourist attraction that is well worth a visit. When you have seen the clock and I guess midday is the best time to hear and see its performance, then head gto the tourist shops as they are cheaper than the airport ans we didn;;t see many other shops selling souvenirs on our travels around Vancouver. Looking back at the history, the first clock was made in 1977 and I would have guessed it to be much earlier.

Time and chimes are a bit off. They need to adjust the clock. Not bad for being in operation for such a long time. Lots of tourists taking pics, be patient if you want one, or come at a time like early in the morning when it is lighter in foot traffic. ..... ..... ..... ...... ...... ...... ..... ..... .. .

The Gaston Steam Clock is a true marvel that seamlessly blends tradition with innovation. The clock's intricate design and steampunk aesthetics immediately capture your attention. Its rhythmic chimes, powered by the magic of steam, create a melodic ambiance that transports you to a bygone era. Witnessing the hourly performance is nothing short of magical. The synchronized dance of gears and the release of steam evoke a sense of wonder, making it a must-see for both locals and visitors alike. The craftsmanship of the Gaston Steam Clock is a testament to the dedication to preserving the artistry of traditional timekeeping. The attention to detail and the commitment to maintaining this unique landmark add to the overall allure. A visit to the Gaston Steam Clock is more than just a checkmark on the tourist list; it's an immersive journey into the fascinating world where history and technology harmoniously coexist.

Top rated attraction in Vancouver. Gastown is a great place to visit and this is a very cool landmark to stop by. Feels like a ghost town. Depends on the time you visit it’s beautiful and night. Gastown District located in Vancouver on Water Street downtown. Always a great tourist area to stop and visit when in Vancouver. The steam clock always attracts attention from tourists and visitors. A 10min walk away is the Vancouver Convention Centre, and the Harbour. Great place to visit a night when the convention centre is lit up in different colours. Dinner at nearby Rogue was amazing with big screen tvs and friendly staff. We sat in a room with a group having a retirement party! We didn’t mind the crowd as the food was great!

Gastown is a nice neighbourhood with interesting streets and buildings. The steam clock is nice but has nothing special to me. It still worth the visit. During covid it’s not crowed so you will be able to take pictures without too many people around. There are a few shops, cafes and terraces around if you want to sit and enjoy the view.

  • 5/5 Marcio R. 3 years ago on Google
The clock is located in the oldest neighborhood of Vancouver, an historic area surrounded by beautiful buildings and great stores to be visited. Every 15 minutes the clock plays a few notes and releases steam, a quick and nice experience to be watched.

  • 3/5 Pawan S. 3 years ago on Google
We went in the night to see the lights as well but very disappointed as there were so many homes less people which makes the area very dangerous to go at night. Although the clock was beautiful but it is highly overrated to be honest. And there is no restaurant open after 10 except the tasty Indian bistro for food. Always go before 8 pm if you wanna see it and then have a peaceful dinner with your friends or family. 7/10 for it.

(Translated by Google) Gastown’s most famous is the world’s first steam clock, Steam Clock, which has been in operation for more than 140 years. It stands at the intersection of Water St. and Cambie St. It is now a landmark of Gastown. It sounds every 15 minutes. When the buzzer sounds, most of the steam-powered machinery has now been retired, and many of them have become antiques. It should be rare that they can still work normally. The clock itself is beautiful but the district of Gastown has been gentrified and its unsettling to see the displacement of the downtown Eastside community living in the streets due to the renovictions that occurred to get Gastown to the "high end" tourist local it is now. I preferred Gastown when it reflected it's humble roots of skid row fr the logging days and the bars and establishments that served the longshoremen and loggers of the early 90s

    Stunning gastown 😍

This is a nice old part of town in Vancouver. We were able to find parking easily. There are many restaurants and shops in the area. The one item that was very cool was the steam clock. Definitely stop down and see it. When we visited it wasn't too crowded. You just had to wait your turn for picture.

Interesting part of town during the day, the clock and buildings are great to look at, lots of shops. We happened to walk by at 8 and the steam whistles were alright. We didn't feel comfortable a few blocks away. Seems to be in the edge of a rougher part of town.

  • 5/5 Farid P. 2 years ago on Google
Very cool clock! The steam whistle goes off every 15 mins (and a louder one every hour). The street it's on is also nice to walk around on. Lots of street parking as well (pay with coins).

  • 5/5 Les B. 2 years ago on Google
Checked it out on a Saturday around 12pm and it was not too crowed. The clock goes off every 30 minutes. It was cool to see.

Love walking, bar hopping, and shopping in this area. This place reminds me of pioneer square in Seattle. Classic brick buildings, beautiful trees, lots of cool restaurants, and bars. Definitely a fun street to be walking around.

Click gets 5+ 🌟, but area is less than desirable. Though not as bad as other very nearby areas of town. Loved to be able to see in the clock, see the stream, and hear the sounds! On a street corner, no fees no hours.

  • 5/5 B S. 2 years ago on Google
An amazing spot to take pictures. There’s a Starbucks across the street where you can sit and wait for the steam to rise and sound off the clock. There are some souvenir shops nearby.

  • 5/5 Rick R. 2 years ago on Google
The steam clock is pretty cool. At first I thought it was just running on steam, but then it struck the hour and started playing the Westminster Quarters on steam whistles, and that's when I realized how cool it actually is. It's worth waiting around, especially at the top of the hour. I still have no idea where the steam comes from, but that's okay. It's better as a lingering question!

A good place to visit. Try to plan in a way that you can experience the steam engine chimes. It rings every half hour; however, hourly chimes are better.

  • 5/5 Shubhajit L. 2 years ago on Google
It is really wonderful and very interesting about Vancouver which speaks a lot about the clock's history, since 1977 (when it was built)

  • 4/5 E M. 1 year ago on Google
It is amazing the craftsmanship of this clock. Very popular and just stands there in the corner of the street. Well worth it to make a stop and read about ti and see how complicated but simple is the mechanism that operates the clock.

Nice attraction in downtown Vancouver. Great place for a walk and visit to one of the local restaurants. Steam clock is an interesting concept, I don’t remember seeing something like this anywhere else!

I had an amazing time seeing Gastown in Vancouver. I seemed to have come at the perfect time. With the sun setting setting and the street lights turning on, I was able to capture great pics of the infamous clock!

  • 4/5 Bhavya e. 2 years ago on Google
Always a busy place, we were able to see the steam coming out and also hear the sound it makes for every few minutes. Great to stop by while exploring downtown.

  • 5/5 Lily B. 1 year ago on Google
I love Gastown. It has changed a lot over the past few years and now it has lots of cute little stores and cafes and restaurants. You can easily spend a day here. Don’t forget to visit the famous Steam clock here. It is usually crowded but if you be patient you can get a great pic.

  • 5/5 Yiyi R. 10 months ago on Google
always crowded with tourists to visit and take pictures. The sound from the antique clock is interesting, giving a feeling of nostalgia. This is an ideal attraction for visitors to Vancouver, Canada, a destination as a great symbol of time. So great to come here 🤩

  • 5/5 Nagaraju R. 10 months ago on Google
Looks antic clock! Too of the hour it plays nice music. Great looking design and sound is amusing. Located in pretty populated area for tourists. Paid parking on road side. Worth for our visit.

  • 5/5 Nav p. 10 months ago on Google
We reached 15 minutes before the clock began signing and pouring out its steam. It was wonderful and a soothing tune to hear. Even the area was so good, full of tourists and guides all around.

  • 5/5 Deb L. 1 year ago on Google
Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. The clock comes with its own history and is mentioned in every bit of Vancouver publicity that you see. It plays a wee tune on the hour and 'steams' every 15 mins. Must see! Gastown is a lovely place to wander around in general. One of our guides told us to avoid Gastown for various reasons but I'm happy that we chose to ignore his advice.

  • 5/5 Jeff H. 9 months ago on Google
Really exquisite and historical clocks. You can naturally discover by walking Vancouver downtowns. The alarm goes off every 15 minutes.

  • 5/5 Sindhura Vani K. 1 year ago on Google
Visited this place around 7’o clock in the evening. People are getting gathered before 7’o clock to experience the steam whistle to tell the time. It is such an antique style clock and this place is very pleasant to walk around. Majority of the shops will close by 6pm. There is no ticketing system to watch this but neeed to find the car parking spot. From hear to Canada place is just walkable and can experience the breathtaking sceneries. And their can visit flyover Canada.

The most interesting part is the steam clock. It was a really chill street, not a long walk. The only thing you should be careful walking to the next street, especially at night. There are many homeless people and drugs.

  • 5/5 Er Davinder K. 7 months ago on Google
I visited on Friday and it's on a busy street. Very interesting and Beautiful masterpiece of engineering... nice to see and understand how this clock works with the help of steam only. All the mechanisms are transparent. Must spend a few minutes and try to look into the working of the clock. If you have kids they would love it.

  • 3/5 Fré V. 8 months ago on Google
It's the first powered gas clock but to be honest it's just a beautiful clock that spouts steams every now and then. The places is swamped with tourists taking pictures but I don't really see the enormous appeal. The neighbourhood is pretty cool tho, a lot off nice cafes and bars. Although rather expensive and busy but that is to be expected in a tourist area.

  • 2/5 Erica S. 9 months ago on Google
I'm mystified as to why this site is popular. It's a clock, not huge or that well marked or interesting, and there is a mob around it taking photos. The area has probably seen better days. Now it is one of those tourist areas that has no there there. Not to mention, the surrounding area doesn't feel super safe. I would skip it.

  • 5/5 Celina L. 7 months ago on Google
I like how everything is sooo fast and quick here. So convenient with all the stores cafés restaurants nearby. Also the highlight was the steam click obviously. The steam clock whistles every quarter of an hour… Initially I thought it whistle every 5 mints and took a recording for straight 5mints waiting for it 😂😂😂

  • 4/5 Sharom M. 7 months ago on Google
The clock is super nice, I think every o'clock hour it has a steam show and the system it has is wonderful. 🥰 Gastown is a very nice area of the city, just (it's sad but) you have to be careful with Hastings St. which is very close and full of homeless and addicts. 😞

  • 5/5 方大方 7 months ago on Google
I think this clock is so cute during the day. At night, this clock perfectly blends in with the nearby Victorian buildings and streets. It’s a comfortable historical street.

  • 5/5 Igor V. 6 months ago on Google
Gastown offers an enjoyable experience, especially along its main streets. One standout attraction is the iconic steam clock, which chimes every quarter-hour and has a more extended chime/whistle at the top of the hour. During our recent visit a few weeks ago, my wife and I were captivated by this timepiece. This location is a fantastic opportunity for photography enthusiasts, with its timeless brick buildings, lush trees, and an array of charming restaurants and bars. Visitors have remarked that it's particularly enchanting during the Christmas season. It's certainly a lively and enjoyable street to explore. I highly recommend including Gastown in your Vancouver itinerary.

  • 5/5 Revital Y. 6 months ago on Google
An icon of the city. Just a tip it starts its steam horn a little before the hour so be ready for it! or you will be waiting another hour to hear it again. A very unique piece if history to be enjoyed.

  • 5/5 Skyler M. 6 months ago on Google
An awesome little relic in the heart of Vancouver’s waterfront. Many shops and things to do all around. The clock chimes every 15 minutes on the dot, the clock seems to be behind so be sure to check your phone because it still goes at the right time even if the clock is behind. Always recommend a quick stop to see it and get some photos of history!

  • 5/5 Peter J. 5 months ago on Google
A really amazing sight: A miniature steam engine driving a clock with steam whistles as chimes. Well worth a visit to see and listen to it. Unfortunately, the chimes are about 10 minutes ahead of the clockface.

Exactly what you’d expect from any picture you’ve seen of it. This is more of a stumble upon type attraction when you are in the area for other reasons. Unless your kids are aspiring clock makers, the couple minutes of steam whistles probably shouldn’t be over leveraged as a threat to ensure good behavior.
