Interesting Museum (€7,5 student, 1h visit). The audioguide is interesting, fun and certainly not boring. The displays of torture objects & chains are good and the dark cells really give you an idea of how terrible, lonely and painful it must have been to be locked inside. The screens with testimonies of different lawyers, defence attorneys, etc were very interesting. The route to follow might confuse you, but just ask the workers what else there is to see and they will direct you. The booklet they give you then helps you further understand the purposes of the different chambers. At the end I certainly didn't regret visiting this museum, and enjoyed myself :-)

Amazing tour, was able to get the audio tour in English (different languages present as well). Friendly crew, amazing museum and a cool book to read even more for just 10 euros!

Great museum to visit. Just the right amount of information to unlock history and to present a glimpse of how (and why) people we incarcerated in the past.

Cleverly laid out, like two museums in one. The first part, with the characters of the time, gets a little silly, but the game at the end will prove you learned a lot. The second part really dives into the nature of prison and torture, the former serving only the latter and not as its own form of punishment. Worth the visit and price of admission.

It was a nice experience and this would help you to know about the History and the way punishments used to carry out. It’s not a huge building as it’s quite small as compared to other Jail buildings but still I recommend to visit this. Audio recordings are really helpful and the way they tell the stories is fantastic.

The history is well told in an interactive way. It will take about 1h:30 to visit the whole museum while taking time to appreciate it.

I was accompanied by a man and the woman on the reception only spoke to him, in Dutch, after I made it clear that I speak only English. Even though the amount of exhibits was all right, there was little to no explanaition to them. The booklet provided very general information, most of the iteams and photos presented had no notes. Isn't worth the money. Could have been so much better if there was a little bit more thought put to it.

One of the best places to visit in Den Haag. Perfect for kids or adults.

Interesting place to acknowledge more about how have people been treated when not obeying the law and overall the govern of the country. There's a really interesting interactive game with questions which is showing you specific cases and you learn more about them when answering. Another cool thing is about the pictures - you can look out the windows fascing Binnenhof and imagine the described scenes happening.

Very interesting museum with lots of cool items from the original jail/ dungeon and torture room on display & a great audio guide. Staff were very friendly & helpful. The only thing that could be improved is I feel the bathrooms could be a little cleaner. Other than that, it's a really great, fun museum to visit.

A good but very small museum. The audio tour is definitely geared more toward kids. I would rate it considerably higher but for the admission price, which is quite steep for what is here.

Short and fast tour. Attended one on Dutch language with English audio( English language tours are available too at appropriate times). For my taste a little bit too short and too fast tour. Price is affordable and is 10 Euro per person.

A neat tour and look into past history of the prison. The tour guide really made the experience worth it. Without the tour, the building was really non-descript and not what you may expect. There are audio guides available. Tours are usually done in Dutch, but you may request an english tour (or audio guide) at no extra cost. The admissions n price isn't cheap, but with the tour included, it is worth the price.

Beautiful old building where until 1860 prisoners were kept and prosacuted. You can vist the old cell blocks and the more convenient ones for knights and women. They also have a lot of original torture instrument and other equipement that was used to interrogate prisoners. Also information concerning one of the most famous prisoner, Cornelis de Witt.

Definitely up there in the list of 'must see' museums in Den Haag. So fascinating to learning about the centuries old prison. They have an amazing two part self guided tour. First through the main prison with descriptions in your booklet and then a great interactive audio journey through the second half of the prison. It was very educational and helped to tie together a lot of the history learnt at the other museums. I was very impressed.

Such a brilliant place, so much history and the information on the exhibitions was amazing. They give you a booklet when you first go in and it’s a self-guided tour, then you can come back for part 2 where you follow a different route with an audio tour to guide you. I was so impressed, in particular with how close you could get to everything. You really feel like you’re immersed in the history and you can follow a story with the audio tape which helps you feel more engaged. I’d highly recommend, you’ll need around 1hr-1.5hrs for the visit.

If you have free time and are bored from wandering in central of The Hague, go and visit this museum in the heart of city, there is a nice guy there who has a bunch of great stories about torturing methods in the ancient Netherlands to share.

Small and very interesting museum, 15 EUR entry. Showing ancient prison practices (wall carvings left by prisoners hundreds of years ago), and helpful staff who show you where to go and what to see for free. Highly recommended.

Small but quite interesting even if you don't really know a lot of history. The ticket price is a bit high comparing to the time you can spend in here (I spent an hour with listening all the audio guides).

A very well thought arrangement of viewing plan for the museum. A single story, about a maid being subjected to the judicial system in the past for supposed poisoning in food, guides the visitor to the various elements of the museum. We were given a tour by Mr. Han who was very passionate in his explanation and was very friendly.

What an impressive place and how cruel we were in the middle ages. Although the advised age to visit is 8 it was no problem for younger children.

It was cool. The amount of information was good, not too much, not too little. English audio guide available and inc. in the price. would totally recommend. Not wheelchair accessible.

This museum is significant due to the historical events that took place here concerning the brothers De Witt in the 17th century. However, aside from this fact, I found the museum to be rather underwhelming. There’s not a lot to see since most rooms are mostly empty. The exhibit could be improved by including more information, narrative and historical objects. The first half of the museum focuses on a story about a servant who was prosecuted at the Gevangenpoort centuries ago. I didn’t find the story very engaging to be honest and seemed to be geared more towards a younger audience.

Very interesting experience. Can definitely recommend this place if you are interested into history of law, prison and torture.

Interesting; a former prison. They offer a regular guided tour in Dutch, or you can use a free audio guide for other languages. Dutch Museum Card accepted.

Very informative journey through the processes used to drive societal behavior. Not a tour for young children, some descriptions can be quite detailed.

The English audiogude was a little bit uncomfortable. I visited in March and there was no heater in the museam so that visiters can experience the real situation in prison. But it was really cold.

The museum is very set up. Plus, you get two audio guides that make the visit a lot more interesting

An amazing site to visit while in Den Haag. We got to walk through what used to be old prison cells, see the types of equipments used and follow a lady as her fate is determined. There are two parts to this museum. First, an audio guide around one part of the museum. In the second, we are given a booklet containing information about each of the rooms that we will be visiting in the other part of the museum.

Interesting history of the ancient prisons. Stuffs are very friendly. The route is well-planned.

When you're interested in torture stories and grim surroundings, this is the place to be. Not sure about the price as I got in via Museum Year Pass. But the service is very nice and you'll get a nice free audio tour (if you're interested) through the residence. It's stunning to actually walk around in a place like this. There was a room with a video, this could be updated with some new technology. Then again, a very interesting experience!

I never thought I would be so well received in prison in The Hague, starting with the sweet and beautiful lady at the reception and not forgetting all the helpfull and nice staff at the Museum of Gevangenpoort. Don't get me wrong but I wouldn't want to spend the night there even if I am giving Gevangenpoort 5 stars! As soon as I entered the reception I was immediately identified by the nice lady who warmly welcomed us making us feel strangely comfortable to the point I was confused by such politeness and friendliness...in a prison! It was a wounderfull surprise, never though I would learn new things in jail and I even got the chance to sentence someone to death! I am guilty, I was branded (in the heart!), I want to comeback to Gevangenpoort!
