Vianden Castle is highly recommended for history buffs and anyone seeking a visually stunning experience. Consider visiting outside of peak season (Nut Festival) if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. The audio guide is recommended to get the most out of the experience.
Tickets can be purchased at the entrance or online; buying online may offer a discount. Public transportation from Luxembourg City takes about 1.5 hours. Be prepared for some uphill walking.
What a beautiful castle! Fully restored in the 1970s, it’s exceptionally well-preserved.
Vianden Castle is absolutely stunning! There are about 22 rooms open to visitors, and each one has its own unique vibe...
The restorations are done in a respectful way so you can really get a feel and insight how people used to live.
When we got there I felt like entering the castle in Disney cartoons. It was really amazing.

We went there with the family and loved the town. The castle captures very well the architecture of that history period with many items that are showcased that further explain that time period, but also on the upper floor there was an art exhibit with entries from young artists from around the world. The views from each balcony and amazing with nature and the village surrounding the castle.
Easy to reach from Luxembourg by train and bus. Entry is 13 euros. There is no much inside, mainly the structure and you can see foundations, the chapel,…. In 1820, William I sold the castle to a local merchant who immediately began dismantling the structure, selling off valuable materials such as roof tiles, wood paneling, doors, windows, and metal gutters, leaving the castle in ruins. The castle was restored in 1977.
I had seen a road sign for the castle from the highway. I had no idea it's the second most visited sight in Luxembourg. I a bit of a drive but well worth it. Lots of history. Lots of scenery. Beautiful country side. The castle underwent a preservation stabilization in recent history. Well worth a visit.
From the medieval times, it was originally a sentry post in 400 AD with its foundation and walls built of stone. It later became the seat of counts of Vianden. Over centuries, it was enlarged and rebuilt and passed down through inheritance until 1820 when it was sold and later fell into ruins. In 1890 it became an asset of the grand-ducal family of Luxembourg whose family later transferred it to the state in 1977 and the state began reconstruction to preserve its history. A tower, a hall and a chapel - symbols of a medieval aristocratic property. The visit started with an upslope walk from the bus stop to the entrance of the castle, where I got my ticket (€13). Then it was more steps to climb inside but not steep. Missed the audio guide (€2 as an online version to be used on your own device) at the entrance, but I'm thankful for the QR codes throughout the castle that gave detailed descriptions of the different areas and exhibits. I later discovered a small exhibition inside the Gift Shop with a video on the history and reconstruction of the castle. Should have started the tour here with an overview of its history before going into the castle. Overall, I enjoyed the visit and am glad I made it here. Highly recommend this as a must visit. I was actually still hesitant last night due to the long travel time across multiple modes of transport. But now, I'm glad I made it. In fact, it was what I enjoyed most this trip.
Beautiful castle. Definitely worth a visit! You can come via train and bus (lines 180 and 181) from Luxembourg and it takes approximately 1 hour.
One of the most beautiful castles I have ever seen. It is located on a picturesque location up the hill and is intrinsically woven with the history of Luxembourg and the grand ducal family. It is very interesting to see how the castle has evolved from the Roman era until today.
Vianden castle is really nice to visit. The restorations are done in a respectful way so you can really get a feel and insight how people used to live. The location is exquisite, giving beautifull panoramic view of the woods and town of Vianden. One can park close to the castle, payed or when driving up to the panoramic viewpoint, one can park on the right side of the road for free. Entrance in 2024 is 10eu for an adult. In our opinion the castle is not really suited for children younger than 10. They will probably be bored after a while. For adults it is really one of the more beautiful castles to visit
Very beautiful and well treated old castle. Definitely should get the audio guide, it's very helpful. Try to follow the predefined order of visit. There is a circular route to follow, very well designed. The entrance fee is 10€ and the audio guide 2€
Absolutely stunning castle with incredible views over Vianden and the valley. The climb up from the village is a bit steep but totally worth it. Inside, the rooms are beautifully restored, and you really get a sense of the medieval history. There are detailed exhibits and clear explanations in multiple languages. The terrace café has a great atmosphere too. I recommend taking your time to walk around the exterior paths for the best photo spots. One of the highlights of our trip to Luxembourg.
A must see/visit when in Luxembourg. Great audio tour with a lot of information. Well renovated castle. Start with the video above the restaurant, it will give you a nice and quick overview of the development over the years. When leaving the castle, there is a nice hike going down (not to the left, but to the right), just follow the sign that says Vianden 0.5km.
Worth a visit. Best arrive around 10am when they open to avoid queues, this is a popular destination. Park in the car park just below the castle or if full then along the access road to the village. You need a min of 1h to just see go round the castle and visit all 22 numbered places (follow the circular route). However there is a lot more going on, including medieval activities, falconry, fencing, music, dances, markets etc. so best plan 2-4 hours.
Great historic castle to visit in Luxembourg. It has lots of historic information and historic things preserved. And in spite of being historic, its indoors have a modern look and upkeep. Please keep in mind that there is a steep hill to climb to reach the castle. So if there is any elderly person visiting, they could make some arrangements for themselves. The public transport from Luxemberg city centre would take at least 1.5 hrs as the buses and trains are on an hourly basis. Overall, it was a nice castle to visit.
Vianden Castle in Luxembourg, built between the 11th and 14th centuries, is one of Europe's largest and most beautiful feudal residences, combining Romanesque and Gothic styles. Once home to influential counts, it fell into ruin before being fully restored and is now a major cultural monument. We chose to walk up instead of the chairlift as it was cloudy and started to drizzle but it is a beautiful walk thru the village/town which I highly suggest instead of the chairlift. A MUST visit when in Luxembourg.
Loved the visit to the castle! It's been restored from ruins, so some might argue that it's "fake". But I enjoyed the experience nonetheless. There are plenty of rooms and things to see. Also excellent views of the small town of Vianden.
Good place to visit for those who love the history. Well restored castle with some entertainment. They have schedule for traditional dance, sword fighting and something else. Also they had a market with hand made staff right inside of the castle. There are some historical artefacts. Lots of stairs. However there is an elevator in the one of the towers.
If you accidentally booked a full weekend trip to Luxumburg and has no plan to do on the second day, probably this would be the most worthy point to visit with 1hr+ by train (currently with replacement bus). Do mind the timetable as castle closes at 16 in Feb and 17 in Mar. And the current replacement bus needs an exchange at Ettelbruck on an hourly schedule, do check the CFL official website for accurate timetables and Google maps sometimes could go wrong. No need to buy ticket in advance as no major queue there only 200k visitors per year so lite traffic.
Vianden Castle is absolutely stunning! There are about 22 rooms open to visitors, and each one has its own unique vibe, making the experience diverse and captivating. The rooms are beautifully preserved and offer a real sense of history, giving you a glimpse into different eras and styles. The architecture and decor are incredible, and the views from the castle are breathtaking as well. Definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in history, architecture, or just want to explore a beautiful landmark! 🥰
This castle was so nice and you could know more about the history of the Vaudan dynasty at the old times. This place looks far from the city centre of Luxembourg, but actually that was so easy to get there. The Google map helped a lot and showed accurate information about the transporation. Before we started our trip we worried there would be difficult to access but turned out it was easy. When we got there I felt like entering the castle in Disney cartoons. It was really amazing. We spent about 1.5-2 hours to complete the route and sufficient to read through almost all information. Also digital audio guide is available which costs €2. That helped a lot.
Renovated castles with a path to follow to go over all rooms and locations. Small cafe and shop at the end of the tour. It also has an interesting video explaining the castle phases throughout history. Tickets cost EU13 but I think it is worth the visit. Not accessible for people with limited mobility.
Absolutely wonderful experience. I recommend going to it and parking nearby on the incline :) . Well worth the money to explore and see the city from above. The information with QR codes was also nice.
Excellent castle to visit, very reasonably priced including the cafe. Although there were a reasonable number of visitors following the route around the inside of the castle, the visitor centre (located through the gift shop) was empty. This contains exhibits and a film presentation of the development of the castle over it's life span. The graphics on the film presentation are excellent. If you visit the castle, please don't miss out on the visitor centre.
I bought the ticket online at get your guide so it was €2 cheaper than the offical site or offline. Be prepared to hike to the castle and within the castle itself 😂. The inside wasn't as big as i thought (i thought there were more bedrooms but maybe it's because it resides inside the closes quarters). It was interesting, and more if you're the museum person type. I am not, so i just take a round for 1 hour 😂.
Very nice castle. Beautiful views. Nicely renovated. Cable car is a good walk up the Mountain from the castle. On a hot day it is not easy. I would not recommend the cable cars for children under 6.
What a beautiful place. This is the heart of Vianden if you are in Luxembourg like in my case, is not far and you can find free public transportation There is a fee to enter the castle, not that expensive. Beautiful town (city) you will feel the German spirit and the mix between the medieval and more. Places to eat and cozy hotels are available everywhere, I love it
€13 for adults or €7 for students. It’s a beautiful redeveloped castle. In my opinion the most picturesque in luxembourg. From the top you can overlook the quaint town and mountainous landscape, even seeing into germany. They also offer audio tours for €2 and there is a cafe where you can get sandwiches and drinks for not too badly priced. The gift shop does your classic souvenirs at about the same price as the other souvenir places. There is also a nice stamp you can use on your postcards. The castle is not too steep of a walk up to either so is accessible for all.
Worth the journey … picturesque views on the way and at the castle. Plan ahead to time the train and bus . There is a WW2 museum & monument in Ettbruck ..7 mins away from the train station. The castle is beautiful and purchase the audio tour.
This was an incredible castle experience, we arrived just before they closed, and the weather was overcast with light rain, which set the perfect "Dracula castle" vibe. Beautiful view of the surrounding area and town and amazing to see what looks like the still functioning well. Definitely worth visiting.
What a beautiful castle! Fully restored in the 1970s, it’s exceptionally well-preserved. Vianden is a lovely town, and I highly recommend visiting during the Nut Festival in October—although it can get a little hectic if you are into more calming activities. Tickets for the castle can be purchased at the entrance, so there’s no need to book in advance. There’s also a nearby parking lot with very reasonable rates.
Beautiful castle with an incredible history in the charming town in Luxembourg. Well worth a detour. We enjoyed going at our own pace without a tour. Beautifully cared for with great exhibits.
Vianden Castle in Luxembourg is one of those places that immediately feels like stepping into a storybook. Perched on a hill overlooking the quaint town of Vianden, the castle is beautifully restored and offers a wonderful mix of medieval atmosphere and panoramic views. Inside, the rooms are thoughtfully curated, giving a clear sense of how the fortress evolved over centuries. It’s large enough to explore for a couple of hours without feeling overwhelming, and the setting—surrounded by forested hills—makes it especially scenic. Whether you’re into history, architecture, or just want a stunning day trip, Vianden Castle is absolutely worth a visit.
A beautiful castle looking over the valley. Easy access by car and the chairlift. The digital audio guide in different languages is a big plus. Wonderfully maintained. Great views of the valley from the castle especially from the room with all the pictures of people who have visited Vianden.
I visited on Monday in the morning at 1030. Overall, it provided details regarding the history of the castle, but most required you to scan a QR code to read on your phone. An audio guide was available as well for €2 if needed. The castle was well preserved and provided a nice view of Vianden. A student ticket was €7. A visit of 1 hour should be sufficient, maximum 2 hours for a more detailed exploration of the castle and its history.
It’s nice, but definitely not worth the 13-euro entrance fee, let alone the extra 2 euros for the audio guide. There aren’t many real items from the time period. Most rooms just have photos from that era stuck on the walls and some so-called ‘period’ carpets hanging around.
Amazing castle with great history. Very very well route design where you cannot get lost. Every checkpoint you have audio guide that you can listed at your own pace. Tickets easy to buy at the entrance, however you can also get them online.
The castle is pretty good! I love that it's high up top, makes it seem so very fairytale-like! Of course, the hike up after you visit the castle (if you go by the cable car) is exhausting 👁💧👄💧👁 but it's so pretty up there! Went on July 23, 2025
Vianden Castle is truly worth a visit! I’ve gone 2 times now and would go again. Just over the German boarder, country atmosphere, cute village below. Chair lift and restaurant along the river to finish off the half day trip
The castle is simply incredible, mesmerizing with its architecture and the nature around it. Inside there are many different interesting exhibits. We had a great time✨
