The
Government
House
of
the
Republic
of
Lithuania
is
an
example
of
late
modernist
architecture
with
manifestations
of
postmodernist
style.
A
rather
modest
complex
of
four
buildings
with
an
internal
rectangular
courtyard
organically
blends
into
the
environment.
This
building
is
one
of
the
most
important
and
interesting
works
of
the
famous
Lithuanian
architect
Vytautas
Edmundas
Čekanauskas,
which
the
author
tried
to
match
with
the
existing
surrounding
structures
using
the
means
of
expression
of
the
time.
How
the
architect
managed
to
convince
the
authorities
of
that
time
with
such
a
contextual
and
indistinguishable
project
from
the
environment
remains
a
mystery
to
this
day
-
in
the
Soviet
Union,
in
order
to
emphasize
the
political
significance,
it
was
customary
to
give
the
buildings
of
the
Central
Committee
a
shape
that
clearly
dominates
the
environment.
The
architect
in
Moscow
defended
the
building,
which
did
not
stand
out
too
much
from
the
old
environment
of
the
city
of
Vilnius,
only
by
using
the
ideologically
hard-to-refute
argument
that
"the
CK
building
must
be
modest
like
Lenin
himself".
The
interiors
of
the
complex,
built
more
than
three
decades
ago,
are
authentic,
preserved,
reflecting
the
stylistics
that
prevailed
at
that
time,
with
unique
works
of
art
adapted
to
them.
