The
equestrian
statue
depicts
the
Soviet
military
leader
Marshal
Georgy
Zhukov
is
located
in
front
of
the
State
History
Museum
of
Moscow,
in
the
Manezhmaya
Square.
The
bronze
statue
is
mounted
on
a
massive
granite
pedestal.
The
total
weight
of
the
monument
reaches
100
tons.
It
was
erected
on
8
May
1995,
on
the
50th
anniversary
of
the
Victory
of
the
Great
Patriotic
War.
Born
into
a
peasant
family,
Zhukov
was
conscripted
into
a
cavalry
regiment
to
fight
in
World
War
1.
His
youth,
poor
background
and
exemplary
military
record
made
him
a
poster
boy
for
the
new
Red
Army,
and
later
took
part
in
the
revolution
which
toppled
the
Tsar’s
regime.
Zhukov
was
a
brilliant
military
leader,
and
was
considered
as
the
most
successful
Russian
general
in
World
War
II.
Zhukov
effectively
led
the
attack
on
Berlin
in
April/May
1945.
He
successfully
defended
Moscow,
by
driving
the
Germans
out
of
central
Russia.
