My favorite Memphis Museum of all time. Nestled in East Memphis, this former home was donated for all the city to enjoy and hosts a permanent collection of impressionist works and gorgeous gardens filled with statuary, trees, flowers and bushes. The annual tulip exhibit is breathtaking.

I was able to visit the Dixon Gallery and Gardens today while at a private event. Our group focused on the Black Artist in America and the paintings were beautiful yet amazing. I loved how the focus is set on the Great Depression up until the Civil Rights. We were told to expect two more exhibits (2023, 2025) that’ll provide more insight into Black America. I can’t wait to be able to view it! I did take a few photos but wanted to be respectful and live in the moment of these wonderful paintings. Being that admission is free through the rest of the year (possibly longer) I will definitely return to view more exhibits and the gardens!

We were in town for a quick road trip, had eaten brunch and decided to look for somewhere that was free. Dixon Gallery & Gardens was first to pop up in our search. It was perfect as we were only 3 miles away. What we got to see was fabulous. The artwork, amazing. The Gardens were beautiful. However, a lot of the museum was closed off. I would have given 5 stars had there been more to see.

I visited from out of town and thoroughly enjoyed the day there, The Dixson is very nice art gallery and the grounds are so beautiful! I saw a really great exhibit on Women's Sporting Fashion from 1800 - 1960. It was a unique and very well curated exhibit. There was also a local designer, professor with her formal dress designs on display, too. The impressionist, permanent collection, which was very nice, is mostly housed in an original old Memphis home. They also have a nice collection of Meissen China, a children's workshop area, a comfy bistro, and if course the beautiful grounds and cutting garden. Unbelievably, this is all free. They also have beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces for weddings and other events. I highly recommend it.

An absolute must see for Flower Lovers. It's a definite "should have been coming here regularly " experience. Thank you to the benefactors for allowing free admission until 2024!

Delightful garden and art museum! Very helpful and friendly staff. Fresh Flowers are many of the rooms, complementing the season and art work. Small cafe and gift shop are a nice touch as well. Amazing porcelain from Europe and the painting gallery is lovely. Perfume exibit on lone was very interesting and large.

You MUST visit this Gallery and Garden. I had a wonderful experience and it was free! Yes, it’s free until all of 2023. When you first walk in to the left are post-impressionist paintings by Sally Hughes Smith: Adrenaline Rush (Jul 16 - Oct 8, 2023). There is also a coffee shop with a sofa and plenty of tables. There is outdoor seating with umbrellas on each side of entrance. The part of gallery that’s the original residence, display artist like Monet, Degas, Pissarro and more. The security personnel informed me that they rotate the paintings because too many to display at once. It’s simply beautiful. The traveling exhibit is water colors by Zao-Wou-Ki and some of his painted porcelain. The artwork is so colorful and calming. There is also a large collection of porcelain donated by Warda Stevens Stouts. I truly appreciate Margaret and Hugo Dixon leaving this space to highlight art, nature, and beauty! The garden is about 6 acres and simply beautiful. There are tables and benches throughout. Some are in shaded areas but be prepared for mosquitoes. One was buzzing in my ear. There are many sculptures, several water fountains. They have a outdoor library near rear parking lot. There is an area that you can rent for receptions, parties, etc. They have the Dixon Art Camp for a week each summer. A free program for students attending Memphis Shelby County Schools. They create art and learn horticulture. It engages students and families with museum. This museum has many programs on center days of week and throughout the year. Oh, how I wish I lived in Memphis once again, so I could participate! I highly recommend visiting so that you can have the same wonderful experience as I did or better!!!

Mid town Memphis Jewel. We recently moved to Memphis and visited as the admission was free. But, that said the cost for us would be minimal. We will definitely be back in the spring when the gardens are in bloom. The gallery is much larger than we expected. Plenty of docents to assist us. Saw a tour group with a guide. Looking forward to returning.

It was pretty nice to be able to adventure in this gallery and gardens for free. It was nice to see all the nature and the sculptures scattered around. They also have some pretty cool art on display at the Dixon gallery.

This was a beautiful place. I just stumbled across it. We are here on vacation and just googled things to do and I'm so glad we did. This place was absolutely beautiful. The gardens were stunning. The art collection was extensive. It's more than I imagined. We were literally just walking in not knowing what to expect and wearing shorts and t-shirts and we're greeted with smiles. I suggest at least dress casual not touristy.

Beautiful gardens! My kid loved the sculptures placed all throughout. The art gallery is nice. The cafe made us a delicious hot chocolate and a tea. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They allow picnics, so we enjoyed one on the south lawn. Parking is free and easy to navigate. The admission is currently free, so I would encourage anyone to visit.

It was so kind of the donor (s) who gave the amazing gift to the residents of Memphis of free admission to the gallery and garden. (Thank you so much) the gardens are lovely and the gallery features both rotating exhibits as well as staples. They have an interactive location for those interested in a hands-on experience. I am not sure if there's usually someone present at these stations but there wasn't when I went through. I believe these stations would be more meaningful with the help of volunteers or docents. The gift shop is available but prices were not present for most items which is a missed opportunity. How can you decide if you want to purchase an item without prices?! The coffee shop and bakery were enjoyable. Sadly my drink wasn't available, though on the menu, but the kind barista was quick to over an alternative. It was an enjoyable day...worth including on your outing list.

This place was listed in "National Geographic Guide to America's Public Gardens." A book I've had for 20+ years. As we travel, I'll check this book, as well as "Eccentric America" for places to add to my travel experience. This garden (and associated gallery) did NOT disappoint. And actually the gallery inspired me to take a drawing class and begin sketch journalling, like the displayed Memphis Urban Sketchers journals. The gardens (Spring time!) were wonderful. The cafe food was healthy and tasty. Some AMAZING artwork from lesser known artists to MANY world-renowned artists!!! My lil new friend explored my sunglasses while I rested in the garden. Thank you, Vicki Less and others, for your sketch journal inspiration.

Such a beautiful place. Wonderful gardens you can escape in and lovely galleries. Can get a very affordable membership or go when it’s free. Definitely worth a visit for those visiting Memphis and a good regular retreat for those from the city.

I visited today July 11, 2020. The gallery was closed so my son and I walked around the grounds. To be honest I don't know why it's rated so high unless they're talking about the gallery, which I do plan on checking out when it opens. The gardens/grounds were very unimpressive to me. There are actually very few flowers. Actually, I don't even know why they call it gardens. There are lots of trees and a few colored flowers, very few, so really no gardens. I did enjoy listening to the birds. There are not enough sculptures for my taste and I love sculptures. So, all and all I'd say so so for now until I check out the museum.

Since we were there in the late fall we couldn't get the full benefit of the grounds, which although nicely manicured had turned brown due to the weather. The galleries, one of which was the main floor of the former Dixon residence were nice and had excellent exhibits. We got to see the Friedel Dzubas exhibit which is there through January 5th, They offer senior and AAA discounts.

I cannot believe admission to this place is free! Awesome Gallery featuring incredible impressionist paintings. The Gardens were not as big as the botanical gardens across the street, but perhaps more impressive.

Pretty awesome place for a price tag of zero dollars!. They did a great job with the flowers, better than that weak garvan woodland garden. Great place for pictures and have a small gallery with some unique paintings. Overall a must do stop if you're ever visiting memphis. They accept donations!

The gardens are always free admission, and worth even a 10 minute walkthrough. During spring the tulips attract a lot of crowds and photographers, but otherwise usually peaceful and enjoyable.

Nice gallery and gardens with a reasonable price. Good for a stroll and mostly impressionist and post-impressionist artwork with a smattering of sculpture and pewter works.

No gardens just a lot of trees and very few sculptures but the scenery was nice. I enjoyed looking at the sprinklers and listening to the birds. Unfortunately, the museum was closed due to the virus. So, I didn't get a chance to go in, but I do plan on returning to check that out too. I don't understand why it got rated so high and why it's called gardens because I only saw a few colored flowers, just lots of trees. The trees were nice though, I just expected to see flowers and sculptures and that was disappointing.

The Dixon Gallery and Gardens is a beautiful destination and I am so fortunate to work across the street. We bring residents from Town Village Audubon Park regularly to explore and for the quality programs. I often go with my family as well. If you have never been you must go and see for yourself!

A great place to stretch your legs as well as see some artwork. The usual collection contains works by French Impressionists as well as installations by Jeff Koons, Rodin, and Jun Kaneiko. The grounds are manicured, with bubbling fountains and sculptures throughout. Also a great place for weddings and events, as they do rent the space out. Free on Saturday mornings and pay what you can all Tuesday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
