Kadugannawa Ambalama is a wayside rest which is situated along the Colombo – Kandy Road, a few meters before the Kadugannawa pass. Built during the British colonial rule in the early 19th century, the ambalama is a famous stopover for horsemen and merchants traveling towards ancient hill capital of Kandy from various other parts of the country. The structure of the ambalama represents the Kandyan architecture and is designated as an archaeological protected monument.

Ancient and historic place which runs as long as Kandyan kingdom days. This is a national heritage location. Good old days climbing along this Kadugannawa road might be tedious task and the place had been used for resting.

This is one of the Historical Place in Pahala Kadugannawa, This is known as Ambalama (Rest Place) where people Rest while Traveling by This Way, this is not in use now millions of people passing this many of them don’t know about this historical place. Should maintain this properly. Nowadays everywhere they paint walls and all but this ambalama still with old paint, if anyone seeing this plz consider about this.❤️

Renovated and conserved by the Department of Archeology, this Ambalama (Resting Place) is a historical landmark of the Colombo-Kandy highway. Ambalama was used in ancient times where the main mode of transport was by foot. The commuters travelling long distances used to stopover for meals, snacks, resting, during bad weather and specially overnight. This Ambalama was used by thousands of commuters travelling between the Kingdom of Kandy and Colombo commercial hub, specially during the colonial era. It is worth to stop for 15 minutes to observe the remains of an ancient transport tradition in Ceylon and understand the drastic development in transport with the invention of wheels, fossil fuels and engineering. For authorities - not enough parking, packs details of the place, should be open and allowed access inside, you can even open a little restaurant with authentic local food and tea. Another missed opportunity to promote tourism and earn forex.

The paint is showing signs of aging and the gate is closed inside. But you can easily jump it. The location can use some maintenance. Don't get me wrong, its clean but aging. The surrounding view is not the best near the ambalama. You could park about 1 KM above and come walking down for some finishing shots. What rest houses are today this was so back in the old days. What we take for granted today was luxury not so far ago.

When travelling towards Kandy on the Colombo – Kandy main road running from Colombo to Kandy, this Ambalama can be seen on the left side of the famous Kudukannawa Hill. Ambalam is a place used in the past as a place to rest and spend the night when having long journey. The building dates back to the Kandyan era and is about 200 years old. This building has an archaeological value and it  has been renovated by the Ministry of Tourism according to the supervision and technical instructions of the Department of Archeology. Kadugannawa Ambalama which is considered as a National Heritage in Sri Lanka.

(Translated by Google) This Ambalama can be seen on the left hand side of the Colombo-Kandy main road as it is in the middle of Kadugannawa hill and if you are traveling towards Kandy. Built during the British colonial rule in the early nineteenth century, this Ambalama is a popular lodge on the way to the upcountry capital Kandy. Another archeological site in Kandy, built in the style of architecture, is an archeological site. A few years ago, the front of a vehicle was re-preserved.
