This is a State park. If you pay for the recreation pass with your place you enter free! The Beach is so clean and clear! Sand is great for building Sand Castles! There’s several natures walks. Horse back riding, Camping, lake access for boat launching... Is good for fishing. It’s my Family’s first choice and most visited Beach! Idk why anybody would pick Walled Lake, or one of the Kensington Metro Parks over this State park!

My camping trip at Highland Recreation Area was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! The site was clean and so peaceful! I loved how rustic it was! Even got to see horses! The bathrooms were clean always and the staff was great! If you go you have to hike up to “Haven Hill” and see Edsel Fords cottage and site where his lodge was. Learning about all of that up close and personal was hands down one of the coolest experiences. There is history all over the park and it’s truly amazing! I loved all the signs to give you some history on everything! It was so beautiful and peaceful. The lakes are great, I went fishing and kayaking! I highly recommend trying out this campground/park if you love the outdoors and learning about history you have to try it!

I love the hiking trails here and the history of the Ford Estate. They have a 2 mile out and back gravel path that is nice for family walks or bike rides, three well marked hiking trails, challenging mountain bikes trails and trails for horseback riding. Some trails are mult-use for horses and hikers so just be aware. There is also swimming, a ballfield, old Ford homestead ruins to explore and at least one geocaching location to find!

I always get my steps in this park and the dogs love it. I believe the main trail is 6.5 miles round trip. There is a groomed trail with amazing scenery and wildlife. There are horseback riding trails. There's a lake (but dogs not allowed 😞). There are other less groomed trails and the Highland House ruins that are intriguing. I highly recommend this park for nature lovers.

It was a beautiful sunny day, February 16, 2020 for a walk with my dog on the trails in Highland Recreation Area. There were many others walking and taking in the beauty of Michigan in the great outdoors. I especially was in awe of a couple who were walking their five dogs and one of the dogs had assistance with wheels on a cart for his back legs. I love that people take the time to help animals with needs. The dog was happy to be out and about❤

Large expansive park with nice walking trails. Does have vault toilets to use in off season. Well maintained. Trails can be confusing so watch maps closely. Trails are as short or long as you would like to make them. Lots of people walking dogs.

I've been enjoying this park for years. I bike and walk the trails all summer long. The beach is great. The boat launch has a great space surrounding the area. Historic places are interesting, like Haven Hill and all the treasures to explore.

Especially the highland mountain bike trail. I trail walked it. I would say it’s not scenic. You start at the A loop and have an option either to go to B-C loops or go to D loop. I chose B-C as it’s a bit longer. The map explains what to expect from each of these loops including the terrain. You see some deer on your trail. It took me about 3hrs to complete 6.5 miles(didn’t go to C,D loops as it was getting dark). Equestrian trail n bike trails are other options. “All trails” app shows this as a hard trail, but I would say it’s Moderate. I don’t see why this trail can’t be enjoyed if you got an eye for it.

Just north west of the metro area. Trails, biking, 🎣and camping. Picnic areas. The Lake and hiking trail are a great reason to visit. State park, recreation pass needed.

DNR act extremely arrogant and like they're better than the visitors. I understand that it's part of their jobs but they act like white lake police and treat you like criminals without knowing the situation or what's going on

Great park with lots of trails. A few rentable pavilions, a beach, a boat launch for kayaks and canoes. We love visiting the haven hill house and climbing the hill

Terrible camp ground. Two of the staff were very rude to my husband. There were piles of dog poop at our site. The bathrooms were gross. Dogs barking all night long. Booked for two night only stayed one. They’re refusing to give a refund. Would definitely not recommend and will not be returning.

Love this area! Several hiking trails and bridle trails, and an MTB trail that's one of the best in the lower peninsula! Haven hill nature area is one of Michigan's 12 National Natural Landmarks. Two beautiful lakes and rolling hills and to this parks beauty. A historic park as well with ruins of Ford's estate!

Nice wide main gravel trail with relatively gentle slope downward from the trailhead near the park entrance. We didn't do any of the side trails this time, but will come back to explore them.

This State park is such a great place to go too and take in the sights. The hiking trails are kept up well and not crowded at all. The camping here is great and clean. What this place has to offer is a great time to spend with your family and friends out in the wild but calm atmosphere. It's nice too see the wildlife and walk or hike the trails.

With 5,900 acres, everything you want to do in nature is here in Highland State Recreation Area. From biking challenging trails, to hiking, camping, learning about a key figure from Michigan's unique automotive history, swimming in a pristine lake, horseback riding, or just taking in some amazing fall color~it's all here. I have hiked 10 + miles and saw a golden eagle in this park! If you hike or bike in far enough, there are views in this park that are just breathtaking.

My summer camping at Highland Recreation area was something else! Woke up to a surprise breakfast buffet – compliments of a grass-munching rabbit right outside my tent! Later that evening, I had a magical moment where I saw the most beautiful raccoon I’ve ever seen! It even dove into the dumpster! Forget nature documentaries, this state park offers front-row seats to raccoon athleticism. To top off all the excitement, my dog tried to make friends with a skunk. The skunk had a different idea. This park gets a perfect ten, not just for the beautiful area, but also because the staff is so hot, they could melt the ice in Antarctica. It's like a nature retreat with bonus eye candy – highly recommend for the views, both scenic and staff-related!

The trails were well kept. Some markers for which trail you were on were missing. Hard to tell where to start . Best to use "All trails" android software.

the hiking / biking trails are not recommended for hiking; whereas using the horse trails or hiking trails would provide more scenic and appropriate routes. Very steep inclines- not for beginners. No wildlife (open to hunting) but a nice workout.

Thousands of acres to explore,it was originally the Summer retreat of Edsel Ford and his family they deeded it to the state for this recreation area that you can ride bikes walk swim rent boats and also camp plus in the winter there's great cross-country skiing, lots of deer and wildlife just keep your eyes open you'll probably see something.
