Hands down the worst dining experience I've had in my life. A group of 9 of us got together to celebrate a friend's 30th birthday at what was her favourite restaurant. It was the first time we'd all gotten together for dinner since Covid so we were all extremely happy to see each other and all chatting outwardly. After waiting over half an hour to get served, we were met at our table by Jan, the owner. She proceeded to loudly announce to our table (the whole restaurant) that some of our table would he refused alcohol with our service, specifically pointing out one of the couples we were dining with. Our friends had driven out from Chilliwack to make dinner and were publicly shamed for "being drunk and slurring" even though neither had drank all evening. Jan refused to take their word for that, continuing to accuse them of being intoxicated in front of a packed restaurant. It was only until the rest of our table strongly backed them up that she let it go, yet didn't even muster an apology to either of our friends, one of whom was left humiliated in tears. Ironically, we had 3 designated drivers and a pregnant woman at the table, and yet we were profiled as drunk and belligerent. We decided to stay and have dinner, even though the whole table felt incredibly uncomfortable and embarrassed that we'd been called out for simply enjoying ourselves. The food was good, their menu is great for gluten free food. We tried to move past it but the woman who's birthday it was, was extremely upset and it really impacted our experience. Upon paying for our bills, our friends, who were publicly humiliated, commented that the ownership made no attempts to rectify their actions. They weren't offered a discount or even a drink as an olive branch, even after our table put over $1000 into the establishment. Jans response was that it wasn't up to her to make guests feel welcome and she was just trying to run a business. She had no empathy, no sympathy and went to the point of blaming our friends for the situation because "we were loud" We were then told that we weren't welcome in the restaurant again. My partner has previously worked in the service industry in Vancouver in fine dining restaurants and she has never experienced such horrendous management in her life. She was left disgusted and floored at how disrespectful a business owner could be to a regular group of diners. We eat out numerous times a month and we've never had an experience like this in our lives. It's clear Jan would rather have her diners be suits and ties over young professionals wanting to have great food and great times with friends. I will be telling everyone I know not to waste their money on such a horrible woman. I hope she's happy she ruined a wonderful person's 30th birthday at expense of owning her own mistakes. EDIT; The response from ownership is disingenuous and sums up the lack of accountability to her own behaviour. Nothing of what she has said in the response happened. Beyond flabbergasted at the cognitive dissonance in this response

I really wanted this to be a great review. We’d been waiting for months to finally have an opportunity to make it out to white rock to go to this gluten friendly restaurant. We went on a weekend for an early dinner and it wasn’t busy. We thought we just had great timing. The first table we were seated at was terrible, there was barely 2 inches of knee room because it was a fire table with propane underneath (which we were not using). We continuously hit our knees and when we sat back we were so far apart we could barely have a conversation. The only other available table on the patio had this same table so we waited for the one next to us to clear and expressed our desire to move. It took the waitress at least 20 mins to clear the table for us (there were only 3 tables of people at the restaurant. It was not busy by any means). The tortilla was dry, crumbly, and stale, the taco itself was filled with dry, stale, bagged cabbage with no sauce on it. There were also tasteless slimy “pickled” red onions on top of the taco. The fish itself was incredible dry. We stopped eating and when the waitress came to check on our first few bites we told her they were very dry and didn’t taste very good. She offered to bring some chipotle mayo. We agreed and tried that on it. It was disgusting. Between us we started with 6 tacos and were barely able to eat two of them. When the waitress returned, we asked for the bill, she never offered to bring us a take-out container for the remaining 4 tacos (not that we would want it). She did, however, proceed to bring us the full bill including the two taco orders. She didn’t offer to discount it or credit the bill even though we hardly ate any of the meal. We are out over $60 for the most disgusting meal I’ve ever had. I also cannot believe, after expressing our concern, trying again, and still being unsatisfied, that she charged us the full bill. I’m incredibly disappointed and would definitely not recommend.

Excellent BC Celiac Association Chapter dinner served at Jans! Total of 30 people enjoyed fresh fish and chips, calamari and other gluten free, safe meals! Beautiful night for dinner on the patio and we were serenaded by a members son - Austin!

Owner accused close friends there to celebrate a birthday of being drunk upon first arrival (they were completely sober and had driven there) and tried to kick them out. Then gave them more trouble when they said they felt the disrespect warranted something off their bill. Jan is rude and doesn't care if that's how customers are treated.

Disrespectful and rude to my friends. Drove from Chilliwack to eat there, told not allowed drinks cause they we're to drunk? Embarrassed them in front of everyone. Then once corrected allowed. They asked for a drink to be taken off the bill and they got yelled at once again in front of everyone, then once again outside. Jan the owner yelling. Ur disgusting humans.

First time going to Jan's on the beach.. and it was amazing. When you first look from the outside.. it was a place you might quickly check but move on. However, we decided to stop and try it out and it is SO TRUE.. looks can be deceiving. The staff was very friendly and when I ordered th seafood fettucine.. the presentation was beautifully done and it tasted AMAZING. You think since it was in a bowl it was a good portion but I found it very filling and had to take home. They filled it with lots of delicious seafood.. and I was not disappointed. So happy that we did not pass it.

We had a private event for thirty people to celebrate an upcoming family wedding. It was a perfect venue and atmosphere for everyone to celebrate. The food and service was fantastic. Our out of town guests were amazed with the view. Thanks Jan we had a wonderful night.

I've been here twice now and cannot rate it highly enough. The atmosphere, location, view, presentation, and cleanliness are fantastic. The food itself is... OUT. OF. THIS. WORLD. It's fresh, prepared to perfection, a labour of love. And the service is absolutely top notch, from start to finish you're treated like something between royalty and family. To add to this, it's actually an excellent value when you consider the portion sizes and quality of your meal. The menu selection is excellent as well, you really can't go wrong here.

Couldn't have asked for a better meal to end off 2020! The staff at Jan's was simply amazing! Easy going, non-stop and super friendly. Great customer service and I love that their meals are enjoyed by those with and without celiac. As the spouse of someone who has celiac, being the advocate can be tiring. But all I had to do was enjoy my meal with my husband and let the staff take care of the rest. We even took some extra dessert home! 🍰😁

Jan's on the Beach! First time and WOW! Sooooo good! They had mimosa on 2 for $10!!! Was on a Sunday. Calamari was perfect, huge pile of onion rings cause we are adults and don't count calories on Sundays lol! Huge chunks of fish for the fish tacos, pulled pork sandwich with yam fries, blackened chicken and brie sandwich. And a complimentary Salted Caramel creme brulee. Nom nom nom. They ran out of chowder 😥 and they don't have Ceasar salad due to the cost of Romain at the moment. We over ordered and everyone was so full. Our waitress was fantastic and so much fun. Will definitely go back.

Cute little spot on the promenade, has a nice patio with a decent view of the water. The food was delicious, lots of gluten free options. My girlfriend is celiac so this was a huge selling point for us! She had the fish and chips and I had the green curry. The staff were also very friendly. I'd definitely recommend, especially for people with dietary restrictions.

This is my favourite restaurant in the white rock area. The fish and chips is so good and of course gluten free. Drinks are great as well and the staff is always friendly.

The service earned them 5 stars for sure. They were accommodating to us and are large stroller(3 babies) the chicken strips for our kid were amazing. The fish in the fish and chips was not my style with the batter being on the harder side. The fries are done great. Everything was quick and with a smile.

Amazing vibe and view. The food was spectacular- especially the scallop appetizer. The brisket burger was delicious, same with the crispy cod burger. The special of the day was pistachio crusted halibut and was to die for. The fish and chips and the seafood bowl were as tasty as they sounded. Also, the French fries, poutine and calamari were so tasty. Now that I’m done raving about the food, I need to call out the service and the chef. Kenya is probably the best server I have ever had the pleasure to meet and is a complete professional gem. Jan herself is superstar and is amazing at her craft. I cannot wait to eat the chocolate hazelnut torte I took to eat at home as I was so stuffed from the amazing food. I am coming back here for sure.

We have walked past this place a dozen times, but never stopped in. Our loss. The food was delicious, The staff were attentive and fun,and the ocean was in clear view from our seats. A wee bit expensive. Definitely worth a try when you are in White Rock. Try the sticky pudding.

We had the French onion soup (amazing 🤩), clam chowder and the seafood risotto. I really like the service and the food here. Would recommend.

Fish and chips is my favourite summer food. When I learned I couldn’t have gluten anymore, I was extremely disappointed— which is why I was very happy to discover Jan’s when my mom and I stopped in White Rock today. Our server (I’m sorry, I didn’t get her name, but she had glasses, if that helps) was absolutely lovely and reassured us that everything that went into their fryers was gluten free! Mozza sticks were huge (a definite plus!) and I highkey recommend getting the calamari if you stop by here too! The restaurant was also quiet which made a great, peaceful experience.

Well. Let’s start with OMG!!! I have not had Onion Rings in over a decade since being diagnosed with a gluten intolerance. What a treat!! They were amazing. Now…. The Fish and Chips. Lightly battered Pacific Cod that was cooked to absolute perfection. I also enjoyed the Calamari and the coleslaw. The rest of the menu looks equally interesting. Going to try the GF lamb shank next time. Our Server, Meredith was incredible. Such an engaging and interesting individual. This restaurant truly caters to Gluten Free needs and we will be back soon.

Don't get me wrong. The food tasted good. And the location is top notch. The only issue I take is the price. And I know they can charge whatever they want based on location alone. But, a Plate of fettuccine, with a deep fried chicken breast for 37 dollars? OK lol

Delicious food, service is a little slow in the beginning but the food came out quick after. Recommend the seafood risotto.

Amazing! 10/10. Gluten free is everything here. My wife missed having fish and chips and we were told of this one of a kind restaurant. Now she’s able to enjoy the fish and chips with no upset tummy. Jan we thank you for being one of a kind. Your servers are so sweet. Thank you so much!

This place is a touch pricier than the Delta area, however over ninety percent of the menu is celiac safe. In addition, they have quality food sources. Parking is through the beach side, parking lots all along this strip or pay for street parking. It is all via an app, which you can add time to if you so desire. We sat outside, where you are before a gas fire table. I run cold all the time. The strip of gas fire was plenty warm and I even turned it down. You have a beautiful view of the beach when you sit outdoors. My water never went empty. My husband ordered rootbeer and I ordered a mimosa deal: two for ten. I wasn't sure I could drink it all but they are tall, narrow glasses so though my husband drank some, I managed most of it. I ordered the seafood pasta. Due to my gf need, the pasta was dried rotini, rather than linguini. That said, the sauce, capers, seafood and pasta ratio was perfection. It was delicious but it was so much food. I could easily make two meals of it. The only criticism is the garlic toast was a single heel of Udi's bread...rather disappointing...especially when served with such delicious food beside it. My husband got the sirloin and brisket burger and I took a bite. It was flavorful, smoky, juicy and beefy. This is not the bland slabs you get most chains and many eateries. The fries it was served with are also perfection. They have fried pickles, onion ring, poutine, mozz sticks and more that I have never seen offered gluten free and safe from cross contamination. On a side note, there are beautiful paintings hanging, for sale, inside. They are created by the restaurant owners father-in-law.

Very cozy, friendly servers, and delicious food! Loved the calamari and the onion rings the cod is not frozen everything is fresh even the sauce! Highly recommended! Had a small issue with the order but they fix it no problem we ended up getting a free food.

This is the best chowder and it is gluten free! They also have amazing, crispy fish and chips. Which can also be gluten free and was the best gf fish! The service was absolutely perfect and in our opinion this is the place to eat in White Rock.

Omg! Such amazing food and great service. Most items on the menu are gluten-free, but you wouldn't know it. To top it off, the view is outstanding. Thank you so much!

Amazing. The greatest gluten free restaurant i have ever been too. Crispy calamari and onion rings. Fresh gluten free cod fish n' chips. Gluten free beer. Great subtle and patient service. Took time to explain the Gf in detail. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I am so happy and will be back many many times

This is a great local restaurant on the beach in White Rock. They have many gluten free and dairy free options. Jan has created an amazing menu that considers food allergies. The fish & chips are the best. We ordered the onion rings which are also gluten free. They are crispy with a great homemade aioli dip. The calamari is also very good. I will be going back to try the cioppini. I definitely recommend this place!!

My wife and I came for happy hours and we ordered the blackened Salmon Burger with SMALL portion fries $21 and Caesar Salad with chicken $22. Service is good but it is pricy for this portion.

Truly lucked out getting a table outside without a reservation. The staff managed the situation extremely well as Jan was alone doing all the kitchen duties! Kudos to a great crew consistently putting out amazing flavourful meals!

Creating Memories that last.... My wife arranged a surprise birthday party for my 50th and expressed how accommodating Jan and her staff were at setting things up for the birthday boy. I totally forgot my mask, but was provided with one upon asking... which saved me a long walk back to the car in the pouring rain. Food was top notch, savory, and with a touch of class. Staff were very friendly and personable. With so many choices to go on the waterfront, it's clear why this restaurant is among those that last. We will be recommending to friends and definitely be going back. Thank you for helping to make my birthday so special.
