This mall always had people outside asking you for cigarettes and money. And when that's not happening, there are people either trying to steal from you, or sell you recently stolen goods. There is a lot of drug deals that happen here in the front and the back. The security in the mall is questionable too, because when a problem occurs, they generally just make people aware of their presence and hope that situations naturally de escalate, instead of actually intervening for the safety of the general public. The listing poorhouse is so bad, that they had to install high frequency speakers outside as a sad attempt to keep young people from hanging around for long, which is not ideal considering there is a major bus hub literally right on front. I would give this place zero stars if it was possible. Not a safe place to be after 4 pm.

There are not many stores open. There are a few places to eat. I didn't feel safe, there are many homeless people in the place, the structure of the mall looks dirty and neglected.

10 years seems like a long time, in some respects it is, but in the grand scheme of things it isn’t. However in this short period Portage Place has turned upside down, let me explain. 10 years ago this place was thriving, yes the crime problem was still there, the drug problem was still there, and so was the homelessness issue, but not to the extent they are now. 10 years ago I felt safe going with family and friends to Portage Place, there were thriving businesses and a vibrant atmosphere. The mall is a horror story if anything. Most of the stores are now empty, selling out, or are government owned. However there is an INC, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Dollarama. But those aren’t the type of fun stores you take your friends or family to the mall too. There are no activities, unless you consider watching your back to see who’s behind you an activity, plenty of that. Let me make this clear, I go to the University of Winnipeg, I have been visiting this place for a while now. This place ISNT safe at all especially for families. Go to Polo or Outlet.

Great convenient location, a little bit of everything. I enjoy walking through the sky walk, enjoying our great multicultural city during fall and winter with a hot cup of coffee. On a side note: they need a public relations person because i see a lot of security walking around like it's a jail. I understand some of the issues they face but shouldn't paint evryone with the same broad, general stroke which is biasism. Work on the inequality and socioeconomic indifferences first.

Very rundown. Filthy and smelly toilets. All sorts of wacky people standing in the worst places possible. The shoppers drug mart had insanely high prices... literally every deodorant sticks were above 10$?!?! There was a nice old guy playing the piano by the broken clock.

Now we lament the death of Winnipeg's downtown. At once the premiere mall in Winnipeg with 2 movie theaters (an IMAX, and a multiplex), first class retailers, a busy food court, a fountain, and one of those floor tile chess boards, now, Portage Place is a shell of its former self. The majority of storefronts are empty, as is the food court. Security patrols are more common than anything else. What remains? A Shoppers, a Service Canada location, Bell/Rogers/Telus stores, a couple of fashion retailers, a sports memorabilia store, and a handful of restaurants. Surprisingly though it is still pretty well maintained. I heard of a plan once to tear the mall down and replace it with condos. This would have been a shame. The mall serves an important function as a meeting place downtown (especially in winter) and a hub for the enclosed bridge system. The economics of retail downtown, however, clearly don't work anymore. Eaton's, the bay, and soon Portage place, have all failed. It looks like the former staples location has been filled with an indoor skate park (it was closed as I walked by it today so I don't know if it is permanent, or a business, or what). I found it encouraging. This is where a space like this could excel. Transitioning from a retail space to a downtown community centre of sorts could save it. Is there an appetite for that? Maybe, but there certainly is appetite to fund it. I think for the most part people who work in and visit downtown are mostly afraid of the place (why? - mostly racism and discomfort with being conducted by the realities of income disparity and poverty). Whereas, people who live downtown are a mixture of low income and, increasingly, high income, not the best mixture to develop a sense of community. Ultimately this is probably the reason for the downtown's fall, people who hang on fighting to hang on and people who take fighting to take more.

A nice place to do some of your shopping right from clothes to everything else. It also has a variety of restaurants in the food court serving a variety of dishes and some of these restaurants are actually good. The interior of the mall is tastefully decorated and the ambiance is also very good. All in all a pretty nice place for shopping and hangout.

Very few stores now open in the mall. Downtown Winnipeg is dangerous and this mall has many addicts, drunks and homeless walking around. There are fights and security is tossing people out constantly. The thieves are everywhere - stay clear of this place.

Mall was once the center of Winnipeg and fun and safe to visit, still active and open.. but a lot of sketchy people tend to congregate here. Witnessed many people stealing and security trying to keep them under control

Not a good place to go anymore. Maybe back in the 80s-90s when it was fully operational. Now it's just a good place to go to the Dollarama and the Government place. But aside from that. The rest of the stores are highly expensive and not very variety. But as a historic place of Winnipeg Culture. It does offer an interesting but sad mall experience.

This place is outdated, unsanitary, and dangerous to be in. Lots of security, violence almost daily, and unfriendly atmosphere and look. There was a case of mice in the food court when I had went in one day, which made me think if it was linked to two different stores closing, including Chinese takeout Manchu Wok, and Taco Time.

This is a nice parkade downtown with too many speed bumps inside. The Pay by phone app is unreliable and fails too many times, and parking rates are among the highest downtown. This parkade could use some improvement to bring it up to 5 stars.

If the employees specifically the manager of the securities does not fallow the *rules* such as walking and sitting in the food court without a mask and at a table for 30+ minuts with his sister to be very clear but then feels the need to send the security to someone's table to tell them they have excited the 30minut limit sitting at the table.... How does that work. Someone explain plz?

My favorite mall. Best indoor water fountain in Winnipeg. The old clock is from City Hall. Good store sells jerseys on second floor. Art store is pretty cool. Food court is still going strong. Good wallets at Bentleys. I miss the Burger King next to the Y.

Clean mall, cozy, could use some more diverse stores . Most places are very niche, so unless you are going to a particular place not a mall to walk around and spend a day shopping in.

Totally not the mall I remember. Went with my daughter for breakfast, well tried. The moment we entered I was shocked wanted to sit down the food court was closed, can't sit by the planters signs all over the place saying don't sit here.security very rude & aggressive. Ended up eating out front of the place. Very unimpressed will not be going back.

Worst mall in Winnipeg. Outside of underground parking for mts center events, or work, absolutely no one really wants to go to that mall. No one wants to address the elephant in the room, but it's the people who hang out there. Clean up the 'riffraff' and it might be ok for the Late 80s /early 90s

Was in here for no more than two minutes and two people got in a fight and security had to kick someone out. I did see lots of security guards, but I can’t speak to how effective they are. As is, I’d probably avoid going here; it’s not like there’s really anything still open.

I'm giving it 3 stars because the customer service of the stores that are there is generally very good, and the building itself is beautiful. That aside, it's become a shadow of its former self. 30+ years ago it was the place to go. Now, you better have your head on a swivel and I would never let me wife go there alone. The worst part is it will only get worse. There is no answer to the question," How do we improve downtown Winnipeg and make people feel safe, and make businesses want to invest in this mall?" Sorry Winnipeg, but the actual answer to that question isn't popular anymore. None of the current mayoral candidates certainly have an answer.

I have enjoyed Portage Place ever since it was put up. So sad many restaurants have closed down though And it is by far the most disgusting women's bathroom in the city of Winnipeg. Really need it upgraded as it makes Portage Place go from a 10 to a Zero jus because of the bathroom So don't use it

They have skinwalkers running out of here after hours. The mall is supposed to stay open for the underground walkway but it does not. Security will steal lost phones and have them resold by the mobile kiosks inside the mall. Mall is unsafe, inside and out. Security is useless and so is the administrative team.

Somehow got worse then ever. Super empty but full of all at once. More guards then people and for good reason. The guard followed me and yelled no pictures. This place is more like a prison then a mall. The guard yelling at me, made the place feel like a war zone. The closed stores, restaurants, and sheer emptiness didn’t help either. They should pay small businesses to come and sell. Anything to not have it look like this.

Downtown area shopping centre, having dining area food courts, various clothing shops, Shoppers, various offices, Canada Service, the mall security guards are there too and are friendly, the same as Canada Service agents they are kind friendly and informative, too. But the business hour is somehow less than other shopping Centre, maybe because it is downtown, so it might not suit all schedules, so you need to check its schedule in the internet etc before going there to make sure the shopping centers and the places you want to visit is open or not

Unsafe. Unkept. Lots of loiterers. Drug deals rampant. Drunk and intoxicated. Tons of homeless people walking about. Tons of beggers and "bums" asking for change and cigarettes. Businesses never last. This use to the a beautiful mall back in the early to mid 90s, it's just a remnant of that iconic era. I wish they would demo it, it's not safe and not enjoyable walking around the mall. It's basically manitoba housing and a homeless shelter. Absolutelyy no good retailers left anymore, all discount shops you'd see in a low income neighborhood. Absolutely no reason to come downtown for shopping anymore.

Not a 5 star mall but I'll always have a soft spot for Portage Place; so many memories here, growing up. IMAX, Oriental Gifts (skywalk), YMCA, HMV, Foot Locker, Burger King, Grand and Toy, Uptown Sports (skywalk), the piano at centre court, Baskin Robbins, Staples, the food court, the bus shack, i could go on but I can't leave out the iconic water fountain (a kid favourite, as a kid myself but also showing it to my own kid and seeing the look on [it's] face)! And who can forget the epic walk from Hudson's Bay through the mall and skywalk to Eaton's and beyond....

Just wanted to say thank you for the great wishes for all the things we needed in our downtown area ! Just got to get the majority of the clients if they have been that , and we can recognize the sight for a shopping and meeting plc and not a lot for the rest kids or other people in our crime ridden Core community. Service people may have a changed respect for the other people who are the only ones that are sick and tired of being used for their own integrity and intimidated by the time they are already reaching deeper into there bugeted britches.

If you're having a bad day, The service Canada security agents will brighten your mood with the way they ask their questions and present you for your business with them. Oh my dayyssss!!! Did I mention the Telus representative I met their? I almost beat myself for not grabbing her name. But not to worry, I will go once again to see if I can get it and edit my review. Awful ,and misogynistic security, never taking the walk way again ,my experience going home April 7th ,they treat people of all class deplorably even when you shop in the mall, as I am regular shopper whether to dollarama ,or ardene atleast weekly as well as use the walkway as a way to get to transit a few days of the week because of outside whether or deterring people ,and I have reported this incident to the mall ,and the company should do something about these officers conduct . This message is in regards to your officer conduct.  At approximately 21:27hrs on April7-2022  I was coming from work as I normally would taking the skywalk accessible till 12.30hrs in Winnipeg Manitoba ,Canada at Portage Place Shopping center to access transit to get home ,and was encountered by two aggressive security officers.  The first approached me in an aggressive manner almost to grab me ,asked me where I was going . I backed off so as to not be touched by the appearing male officer, and said nicely ,I am just going through the sky walk to exit Portage place to go to transit access. He had no further questions, and let me proceed on my way . The second officer in male appearance, dark ,and heavy set as I am only small of 5ft and 112lbs came across to me as aggressive, and over bearing forceful near the dental office on the second level of Portage place.  I said I am just exiting the center to get to transit taking the escalator.  I was then approached further forcefully that being told I had to use the stairwell.  Then ,and there I felt my safety compromised by your security officer, where as I felt his suspicious activity could have led to sexual assualt when he told me I have to escorted out down the not only unclean ,and questionable stairwell not knowing what his intention was ,and feeling as though his intention was sexual assualt. To have no indicent I reluctantly agreed to be escorted down the stairwell to exit. As well I am in the position of having a sprained left knee difficult to bend ,and using these stairs has compromised its healing further.  I felt I was treated deplorably by your officer, and I am bringing this to your attention, and I would appreciate follow up . If I am treated this way ,what if the officer might try the activity on another lady in the same manner?  I have also reported the incident of your security officer with the Winnipeg police service ,and was advised to report it to you, Portage place shopping center, and the company, be the focus is the officers aggresive manner toward me as a civilian. As well ,anyone with an injury, or difficulty in not being able to use stairs should be allowed to leave through using an escalator in a walk way accessible till the allotted time where there is no signage or positing saying otherwise. I would appreciate follow up ,and address to this officers conduct.  I am appalled to the unprofessional manner I was treated . As I myself am a graduate of Northwest Law Enforcement Academy here in Winnipeg, and you do not treat any civilian with this kind of aggressive manner ,or compromise to a persons safety making them feel emotionally intimidated.  As the world is within my hands, and no one should have to feel this way mentally taxed by a security officer that is suppose to provide safety ,not safety compromises ,or uneasiness.  Your guards need proper safety training ,and sensitivity training in anger management for this mall. Sincerely, Sheryl Chislett

The mall used to be a great place. But now it feels a little run down and it's very empty. Back in the day the IMAX was still open but now they have shut it down. If they would up the security and more businesses would come to the mall, it could be a great place once more.

It's a great shopping centre and the state of security related activity is a responsibility and commitment regarding the high costs of assential foods and basic goods. The security guards are undoubtedly understanding and looking forward to seeing everyone and everything that is a high level of respectful customer and favor over many years of experience and knowledge that only certain people who are seeking the opportunity for shopping and dining cafeteria and the momentum of shoppers and all other positive attitude towards other native cultures. Ekosi, it's a very good story about Portage place where all can come and feel free to stay interested in purchasing the amount of products and financial support from The ATM machine and the mall is a worthy place where you're children can feel safe. 🕵️😞😪

Back doors closed until 8am now, it used to be open 7am. It was really helpful to walk through the mall from the bus stop to work, instead of having to go around it now, in the cold.

I like this place because it provides easy pricing restaurants, service canada location, dollarama, dentist, cafe, Canada post, shoppers drug mart, Fido, virgin plus… etc. however, too many scary people around, I was terrified in several conditions. Best wishes for this place.

I was expecting more of shopping stores but there was only ardene, where nobody really helped!! Apart from that shoppers drug mart and dollarama at this place has good variety.

Stopped here before a winnipeg Jets game and instantly felt unsafe inside. Food court was more of a homeless shelter with dozens of security guards watching over the action. First and last visit for us!

Has a post-apocalyptic vibe. Many stores closed. Security detail breaking up fights, etc. Bathrooms scary. Interesting building but no longer a viable enterprise imo. Wish it was a more positive experience, but it is really unclear how to generate large-scale improvement.

Such a shame. Once upon a time… before my time, this mall had good stores in it. It’s so dead now. No reason to go there. It was convenient when I went to the U or W to come here for supplies and a few things. I haven’t stepped foot in this mall since I graduated the U of W. It’s just a shame that the vision for this mall was to be a mini Eaton centre, and instead it’s a dying mall.

Nice mall with very nice elevators. Wish there were less homeless people and security wasn't so strict. I really hope this place never doesn't ever close.
