Absolutely amazing experience. 45 meters under the mountain a 3hr long tour of the fortress, connecting bunkers and artillery. With fully functioning 3 story 100 ton turrets. The old ammunition train has been converted to take passengers and transports you from each section of the fortress. They have 4 generators that are over 100 years old and still fully functional (they are turned on once a month, we were lucky enough to be there at that time). There is a full authentic museum in the bowels of the labrynth. The size of this place is incredible. I drove from England to see this fortress and It was certainly worth the journey, what an experience and an eye opener to the brave men who constructed it. Tours are conducted in language groups so just ensure you are there ready for the English tour to start. At 15 euros a head you will not find a better deal on the face of this earth I guarantee it.

I would like to recommend others to visit this bunker/complex. It is an interesting piece of history which is well taken care of by an association of passionate volunteers. Many systems in the complex are kept in an operational state including its diesel generators. It is impressive to see and hear it working. 90 years old technology that still impresses. You will both walk and take an electric train during the tour. This train, as well, is part of the original transport system in the complex. We did the tour in English and our guide was well informed and enthusiastic. We really enjoyed the tour. Besides, there is a museum in the complex which has quite a collection of different uniforms from back in the day. And maybe one more reason to visit: It is about 12 degrees in the complex which makes it a nice day activity during a hot summer day or a cold winter day.

Really interesting fort to visit if you like war history of WW1 and WW2. Guided visit is compulsory. We had the one in French, I saw another group in English. Could get damp and cold in certain areas, dress accordingly. Have to climb a flight of stairs, about 140 steps, comfortable shoes recommended.

The fort and train ride are interesting, the whole tour is however fully done in French! Making it impossible to follow the long presentations of the tour guide. Furthermore the tour is said to take 2 hours, but in reality takes 3 hours. Being pulled along (and slowed down) by a tour guide you can't understand along a tunnel system that takes longer than expected is more a long slow torture than an interesting visit. I would recommend visiting another Maginot fortress if you can't speak French or don't have much time.

One of the biggest still accessible forts of the Maginot Line and only one with still working machinery. Lots of original material present. You walk past different sections and are escorted by a well informed guide. Fun aspect...you get to ride an electric train to go from one block to the next and back. Tour is only twice a day and takes 2,5 hours. In the morning the tour is in French only. Afternoon English and German sometimes also possible. There is a toilet on the site. The resto is only open for a few hours in the afternoon. You can also walk around parts of the complex above ground via a set route.

Great tour. If you want an English or German tour make sure you book online so they have a matching tourguide available.

Hello. Just a quick word in response to a few comments I've read here and there. My colleague makes the effort to speak English for more than 2 hours. It's not an easy task. Put yourself in his shoes and imagine doing the same visit in a language other than your own. Volunteers with good skills in English or in German are always welcome. Thank you to all the other messages which, fortunately, show understanding and kindness.

This was really my first thing I’ve actually experienced in France. I think it really does show off that France’s Pride and willingness to react to what was perceived as the next war. Really impressive engineering. Multi-lingual (French, English & German) though the German tour got mushed into the English one since there was only 2 Germans to the 5 Americans. Would recommend if you really want to see something that got overlooked but is extremely important to the context of WW2.

I highly recommend this tour. Hearing about the experiences of the French and the locals after WWI and into WWII as we walked through this old underground fort for very powerful. It adds a whole other dimension to the idea of a museum or learning history. A tip though, it really does get cool. O matter how warm it is outside - you’ll want pants and a jacket or warm sweater!

Outstanding Maginot position to visit. Original working train brings you to gun emplacements which are in full working order. English language tours are on Saturdays at 1415. Excellent guides and a great value tour

A fantastic place for lovers of history, fortifications and engineering as well. Underground city carved in the rock. But most importantly a great guide was showing us around. His name is Paul. Attentive guy with great historical knowledge and passion. Highly reccommend this great place

A very interesting and educational experience. Mostly well preserved 3-km-big underground WW2 fortress complex. You get to ride a train on the guided tour, which is in French and on demand also in English or German. The main gun still works and it's fun to see it move.

Very nice place. Did the English guided tour and it was super interesting. Got a great walkthrough the history of the forts. As described on the Webb, bring a sweater.

Yes, the opening times are weird and yes, you'll most likely only going to be able to get a French language guided tour that you won't understand anything of which is a shame. And the tour is very long when you don't understand a word. But this is still one of the best interwar forts to visit. Wonderfully preserved and maintained with a lot of running equipment. You'll take the original narrow gauge train. See the generator running. The turret mechanism works and is demonstrated. It's fantastic!

Very nice visit, I did not expect to be that much in the bunker. If you don't speak french and are visiting off season, I would advice you to make a reservation specifying that you don't speak French and need an English speaking guide. The tour was very interesting, a lot of information and a lot to see. The guide was very funny and we could see he was passionate about the history of the area. Many thanks to our nice guide ! Highly recommend !

Visiting the fort of Hackenberg was a very positive and educational experience. During a 2,5-hour visit you get to see the inside of the fort, different tunnels, ammunition deposits, the barracks, kitchens, power plant and shooting towers and travel onboard of an underground train throughout the tunnels. The fort is very big and extremely well kept, guided tour are available in French and English all year long and the guides are very knowledgeable and happy to answers to questions, our guide Maxence was just great. The temperature inside is always around 12 degrees which makes it pleasant during cold winter days but also hot summer ones.

This is by far the coolest fort I've ever been to because everything still functions. You get to ride the little train to the still functioning gun turits to see a demonstration of how the guns move into position. Huge underground fort, really cool history. Guided tours given twice a day by volunteers who keep the fort going.

Loved the history, the whole place is being serviced and presented by volunteers. Under the ground, friendly stuff will guide you through all the rooms and places (you will be surprised to see the artillery shells and canons working thanks to independent electricity generators) and you will have the chance to ride the original mini train that once carried soldiers and equipment from one point to another inside the tunnel, powered by a 600 Volts ceiling power lines. The history of the place brings memories from the time France was defending herself, but also reminds you about the efforts every single nation done towards peace and prosperity. You will enjoy the turrets, the still-working artillery installation and the detailed tour by the wonderful people who keep this place alive, thanks to their personal effort. For all history buffs and not only, this is a must!

Very nice place You can really feel the chill of the war. Very well preserved. Lot of stuff placed in the museum and you can easily see that they care about historical accuracy. My tour was guided by Quentin and he was giving a lot of details about the complex. If you are into WWII this is definitely place to visit.

Very good experience. The guide showed us around the entire place that comprised of the tunnels with the museum, the generator room, the monorail, etc. A must visit. 👍

One of the best museums I've been to, the tour and tour guide were brilliant, absolutly facinating. It is cold, so wrap up and it does take 2.5 hours with no toilet stop, so go first!

Great tour, one of the most interesting things in Moselle. Ran by passionate volunteers. We did the English tour with Paul - it was really amazing and we'd definitely go again whenever we've got visitors!

Diving into history at Hackenberg fort was a great experience! Most of the fort living and utility places are restored and accessible. The train ride to the batteries give the real scale of the fort size and the fully functional battery makes for a particular experience. Strongly recommended for anyone wanting to understand more about the Maginot line. PS : bring warm clothes, it's really cold inside

Very interesting place to learn about, very friendly English guide and very well informed. It tooked 2h30 the whole tour, it also has a museum and I learnt a great deal about the Moselle area. I recommend it!

This sightseeing was very good and extremely well performed by our guide Paul. We heard stories from both military and humanitarian sides during 1940-1944. The Maginot-line is an impressive construction and Hackenberg is very well maintained. I highly recommend a visit. :-)

Always an interesting place to visit. Great history lesson, in a fort with still functioning equipment (especially if you miss your subway commute 🚇). Block half a day for the 2.5-3h tour, come prepared with a warm sweater or blanket, and enjoy sharing the passion of your guide (thank you, Claude)

Beautiful and lovingly restored 10 kilometers of bunker system from second works war, including arms and uniform collection, and small train. Everything still fully functioning. Great feat of engineering and shows how enemies can turn into friends over time. Kids loved it. Wear sweaters, it is 12 degrees Celsius year round. Tour takes about 1,5 hours. Breathtaking!
