What
happens
when
you
try
to
covet
the
Martinitower
of
your
neighbours
in
Groningen?
An
incidental
leaning
tower
of
Pisa
in
the
Netherlands
is
born.
When
the
Frysian
people
discovered
that
Groningen
was
building
Martinitower,
they
wanted
a
bigger
one
in
Leeuwarden.
So
in
1529,
work
started
on
a
sand
hill
to
build
a
bigger
one.
Unfortunately,
The
top
of
the
tower
became
displaced
horizontally
by 2
metres
(6 ft
7 in) from
the
centre. This
didn't
stop
the
people
of
Leeuwarden
from
trying
to
correct
it
but
ultimately
failed.
They
stopped
building
the
complete
church
and
left
the
tower
standing
unfinished
at
a
height
39
metres
(127.95
feet)
and
183
climbing
steps.
This
event
made
quite
a
laughing
matter
with
the
citizens
of
Groningen
as
they
felt
that
the
people
of
Leeuwarden
are
somewhat
inadequate.
A
feeling
that
is
still
justified
today
in
the
mind
of
the
citizens
of
Groningen
