Like
the
rest
of
the
Swiss
railways
this
isn't
cheap.
However
this
isn't
a
normal
train
ride.
The
views
on
the
way
up
(and
down)
are
spectacular
and
you
get
to
experience
time
at
10000+
ft
with
very
little
physical
effort.
There
are
few
other
ways
to
so
easily
get
yourself
up
to
the
level
of
the
Matterhorn.
(Helicopter/Ski
Lift?)
We
were
lucky
enough
to
be
staying
at
the
Gornergrat
hotel
for
a
few
nights
and
so
had
factored
this
cost
in
as
part
of
the
trip.
From
memory
I
think
the
trip
up
and
down
is
approx
40-45
mins.
It
would
be
prudent
to
consider
the
altitude
and
conditions
at
the
end
of
the
trip.
Over
the
days
we
were
at
the
top
of
the
railway
we
noticed
a
number
of
people
who
had
clearly
let
the
train
give
them
a
false
sense
of
security
and
found
themselves
struggling
with
the
wrong
clothing
and
footwear.
A
number
of
people
were
also
struggling
with
the
physical
exertion
walking
to
the
viewing
platforms
above
the
station.
I
was
amazed
at
how
the
lack
of
oxygen
gets
to
your
legs.
A
day
acclimatising
in
Zermatt
would
help
if
you
had
that
opportunity.
We
visited
in
mid
December,
when
we
left
Zermatt
the
temperature
was
-5,
on
stepping
off
the
train
it
was
around
-20.
In
the
time
we
stayed
we
saw
quite
a
few
people
hurt
themselves
slipping
on
ice
within
seconds
of
getting
off
the
train.
It
was
quite
funny
to
see
tourists
walking
off
the
train
in
trainers
with
no
socks
along
side
skiers
in
full
mountain
clothing!!
I
think
it
would
be
wise
to
check
with
your
travel
insurance
company
to
make
sure
you
are
covered
should
something
go
wrong
at
that
altitude,
I
suspect
that
emergency
help
at
the
top
of
the
mountain
could
be
very,
very
expensive
if
you
need
it.
Especially
if
you
are
staying
at
the
hotel
after
the
trains
have
stoped
running.
There
is
absolutely
no
handholding
and
you
would
be
free
to
wander
off
into
the
alps
if
you
took
a
wrong
turn!
Once
at
the
top
there
are
lots
of
viewing
areas
and
some
other
leisure
activities,
shops
etc.
There
is
also
a
decent
sized
cafe
with
hot
food
and
drinks.
The
stars
of
this
trip
are
of
course
are
the
views
across
the
mountains
and
glaciers.
I'm
not
sure
I
would
recommend
the
expense
if
the
weather
at
the
top
was
bad
so
I
would
want
to
check
that
there
was
actually
a
view
to
see
before
making
the
effort.
You
can
do
this
by
checking
the
webcam
before
you
set
off.
Not
cheap,
especially
for
a
family
but
a
once
in
a
lifetime
experience
so
you'll
have
to
decide
if
it's
worth
it
for
you.
I
highly
recommend
the
trip
in
the
right
conditions.
