Walls of Constantinople The Walls of Constantinople are a series of defensive stone walls that have surrounded and protected the city of Constantinople (today Istanbul in Turkey) since its founding as the new capital of the Roman Empire by Constantine the Great. With numerous additions and modifications during their history, they were the last great fortification system of antiquity, and one of the most complex and elaborate systems ever built.

The Byzantine sea walls of Constantinople were repaired a lot of times . If you see some inscriptions on some of the towers, they are in Greek and refer to emperor Theophilos who conducted extensive restorations of the walls.

(Translated by Google) Ancient Byzantine walls, or rather what is left of them. In some places they are well preserved, in others not very well. The general attitude towards this object, which is under the protection of UNESCO, is surprising. In the battlement towers, there is actually a toilet, in some places there are traces of homeless people, traces of fireplaces, garbage ...

(Translated by Google) Looking at the old Byzantine walls, you understand why this city was once called Constantinople. Looking even at the remains of the former fortifications, one can imagine how huge and impregnable the city was. The length of its walls was 16 kilometers. They had 400 towers, some of which reached 15 meters in height and 20 in depth. The population of the city reached 800 thousand people. For comparison, in Russia at that time in all the cities together, the number of which was about three hundred, the population barely reached a million inhabitants. The legend that Prophetic Oleg once nailed a shield to the gates of Constantinople seems very doubtful against this background. Unless he quietly, at night, made his way to the gate, quickly nailed the shield and fled, while no one saw him. This is more likely to be believed, especially since this "glorious event" is not even casually mentioned in any of the Byzantine sources.

My wife and I began our sojourn through much of Mediterranean Turkey at the Byzantine Walls. From this starting point, we had planned a two-week long trip along the Western coast of Turkey to (mainly) follow the visit made by the Apostle Paul to the Seven Churches of Asia Minor (present-day Turkey) in the first century. It is fitting that our sojourn began here at the Byzantine Walls.

(Translated by Google) The walls of Istanbul are the city walls surrounding Istanbul, which were built in the Eastern Roman era. The walls surrounding Istanbul were built starting in the 5th century and have been renovated four times with demolition and rebuilding. It was last built after 408 AD. II. During the period of Theodosius (408-450), the walls of Istanbul stretched from Saraiburnu to Ayvansaray along the coast of the Golden Horn, from this side to Yedikul, from Ydikule to Topkapi, and from Topkapi to Ayvansaray.
