Emperor Menelik II was one of Ethiopia’s greatest leaders, ruling as King and Emperor of Ethiopia from 1889 to 1913. He is a National Hero who gave Ethiopians the freedom and identity we are enjoying. He was married three times and he had no children with his wives, but several other children by other women that he recognized. He died in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on December 12, 1913 at the age of 69. His statue was erected in Addis Ababa in memory of the battle of Adowa. This was the only major battle in the history of Africa, when Emperor Menelik and his army defeated the Italian army.

A statue was erected to Menelik II in 1930 at Menelik square in Addis Ababa. It was designed and made by German Architect Curtin Specingler and unveiled in 1931. The message on the statue reads: "It is not greatness to hail from a prominent family, greatness (triumph) is to contribute something valuable to the motherland." The message is clearly written to portray the victory of blacks over white opressors--it shows that the color of skin does not make one race superior and another inferior. Aba Dagnew was Menelik's horse's name. And it stands on its two legs and face to the north--to signify the direction of the battle field. The place Menelik II Square, formerly Adawa square, was dedicated to erect the statue owing to its location as downtown of the city during the time, Addis Ababa City Administration Culture and Tourism Bureau Intangible Heritages Senior Expert Memhir Mekibib Gebremariam indicates. Generally, Menelik II statue and Adwa Bridge, around Megenagna, are among the known memorials of the victory of Adwa in Addis Ababa. Memhir Mekibib underlines the fact that Addis ought to see more memorials to inherit the sprites to posterity and demonstrate the history to visitors. I share a little you should visit and see our history.

I really like this square & monument which commemorate the victory of Adwa led by Emperor Minilik II. Even though this is one of the most iconic land mark in Addis Ababa which depicts black peoples nationalism i personally don't recommend visitors to go their in early April, which marks the anniversary of the victory of Adwa hense the anniversary is recently degrading due to the harsh & brutal measure taken by the Ethnocentric authority against civilians who go their to celebrate Ethiopia & holistically Africanism.

Equestrian statue of Emperor Menelik (elegantly stands on the heart of Menelik II Square, which itself is nucleus of Addis Ababa), was erected by Emperor Haile Sellasie in 1930 just a day before his coronation. This symbolic statute was put up with rationale of honoring the victory of Adwa. Respect for our grandfathers!

Stunning new addition to this beautiful city. It is quite majestic at first but it has lots of space for people to meet and lots of stairs to sit on and talk.

Ethiopia is the ONLY uncolonized country in Africa. Thanks to our fathers! Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu are heroes for all Africans. Like the legendary singer Teddy Afro said "I wouldn't be who I am if it wasn't for them". The battle of Adewa! The freedom for all Africans.
