Simple advice STAY AWAY of this place, and an important advice read 1 Star reviews because they all have the same problem, Rude/Racist Staff members. Words can't help with describing how abrupt the lady host is, since we arrived that person is very desmissive and rude behaviour, asking her simple questions about check in and toilets, and the response was from the top of her nose. To a point she was saying with a brass neck " My dad is the owner of the hotel, and we will not give you a refund" From all countries I have visited, stayed in and even the hotels, motels, whatever you name it which I stayed in, this place is by far the worest of all. Yet, to say a fair word, the man was very polite and friendly, and the place is in an OK location for Amesterdam Point proven everyone, please read how hospitable, friendly those guys are. And answering this guy who lacks 101 how to deal with guests: Being sacracstic towards a racist is the normal response and in all Amesterdam all hotels work together with the guest to accommodate their requests including Check In early - " Highly recommend Apollo First" Everyone, as they have accomodated us in 20 minutes after leaving this so called hotel @ 11 am, rain and 9 degrees. Furthermore, the call with booking was recorded when your rude host was yelling at me, you can lie all you want and write whatever responses to make yourself feel better, at the end of the day, your So called hotel is an example of places people should avoid.

Best hotel in Amsterdam! It's not all about luxury, but it's always about how do you feel. Lovely staff. Lovely people. I was there in 2018, 2019, and now in october 2021. And i hope to be back in 2022

only positive was the location we had very rude experiences with the staff who act as if they are always doing you a favour. They cancelled the breakfast without telling us and we only found this out when asking the night before only to be rudely told that they are no longer providing it and were told we could not be given a refund despite selecting this hotel as a bed and breakfast. After asking for a refund the staff treated us very badly - particularly the american sounding staff member who was clearly yelling about us in dutch whilst we were stading there, and even yelled something at us when as we walked out the hotel. The worst hotel experience I have had, the owner himself seemed nice but our experience was overwhelming negative for simply asking for a refund on something we paid for.

Great place in beautiful surrounding to stay in Amsterdam. Lovely hosts, very helpful and nice, clean, cozy room with a shower (shared toilet), and next door to one of the oldest and most interesting botanical gardens in Europe, Hortus Botanicus. You can also have fresh coffee in the morning :) Definitely recommend and will come back for sure :) thank you!

My boyfriend and I had a reservation at the Hortus Apartments. Being new to the country, we were directed to what we were informed were the Hortus Apartments by a local hotel clerk nearby. Upon getting to the Hortus Hotel (again assuming we had arrived at the Hortus Apartments), the front desk clerk asked about our reservation. Just as she was informing us that my reservation was not on file, the hotel manager approached us and addressed me by name (presumably overhearing it mentioned in the conversation), letting me know that my room was ready. At this point, the manager took over and quickly directed us upstairs to a room. Neither he nor the clerk checked or scanned my ID, passport, or checked my email confirmation for the booking (which would have shown that we were at the incorrect location). Although the room did not look anything like the photos we saw online, we shrugged it off as the photos not being up-to-date. We stayed two nights, not discovering we were at the wrong location until the morning we checked out. The owner checked us out and said the room was unpaid for, simultaneously informing us that the actual guests who had the room reserved had been redirected to another hotel because we were in their room. At this point, we registered this as very suspicious. However, as we were checking out, it was too late to do anything about it. I showed the owner my email confirmation to confirm that I had in fact already paid for a room. It was at this point that she told me we were at the wrong hotel. We explained that we had been misled by the manager at check in; however, the owner offered no monetary compensation or even an apology. All she said was that the manager had “made a mistake” and that we should have gone to the correct location. I worked as a front desk clerk at a hotel for three years. The first thing I was instructed to do when checking a guest in was check their ID and confirmation booking (if a reservation was made in advance). I explained this to the Hortus Hotel owner, but she proceeded to dismiss it as a mistake and refused to see it from our perspective. She would not let us leave without paying, so eventually my boyfriend paid for the room. I very much feel that we were scammed. Having worked at a budget hotel in the states, we had better check in procedures than I experienced here. I warn any future guests to reconsider staying at the Hortus Hotel.

Pretty much impossible to beat the hotel for value for money. The hotel is clean and the location is great, central enough to walk everywhere but also in a quiet and peaceful area. The lady who greeted us on our first arrival made us feel very welcome and was exceedingly helpful whenever we saw her.

Great value for money! We stayed for three nights in a clean room with a sink. The hosts were kind and tidy, and the location allowed easy exploration of Amsterdam. Highly recommended for easy going-budget stay, but not for fussy guests.

The room was small but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. It was clean. The staff was very nice and helpful, I had a morning flight to Amsterdam and decided to go to the hotel before checking in just to leave my bags so I could explore the city but they told me that my room was already available, which was a nice surprise.

You feel more as a guest in nice people house than in a hotel. Everyone is beyond nice, friendly, caring. Location is ideal, in a very calm area, 15 minutes walk to the centre, walking distance to all major tourist points/areas. It even has a workout gym... the stairs. Climbing them is excellent exercise 🙂 Very nice rooms, with all you need for a good night sleep, in a real Amsterdam house, which you don't get in typical hotels.

the man with short light hair at the reception was really funny and nice when we checked in! The stairs are scary but fun :D Overall the hotel room was really clean, the bed was comfortable and the staff was super duper nice! We felt very welcome and comfy. It’s super cheap considering it’s really close to the centre. cute cafes near the hotel. Only minus was us not being able to open the window, but i think it was better for our own safety since we lived on the 3rd floor. We will definitely book this hotel again if we come to Amsterdam again!

Fantastic experience in Amsterdam, also thanks to this hotel and especially thanks to the hotel's receptionist(or owner. I really don't know about it): Shalina. The Hotel Is located in a residential zone of the city center, in a very calm location: perfect in order to enjoy every sigle thing you want to do in Amsterdam without the crowd or the prices of the center. This can also happen thanks to the fantastic advices of Shalina from the reception. Everything we asked her, She nailed It! She really helped Us to do whatever we wanted in the best way. All this professionalism, knowledge and passion for the city Is bonded with a very warmfull and funny personality. I even had the chance to exchange some chats with her and the possibility to know each other better: believe me, she Is really gorgeous and a wonderful human being. If you're coming to Amsterdam, you're goint to visit an amazing city. But you can also choose to visit Amsterdam while staying in an amazing place with an amazing host: at Hortus hosted by Shalina.

A good value for money stay, 25 minute walk from the centre. The rooms are basic so you get what you pay for. The host was friendly and very helpful.

Very small room like a prison, very dangerous and small stairs, walls were thin the you hear your neighbours easily. Even toilet I can't fit in it

Historical building. They were friendly. Close to center, tram and metro. Artis tram station is so useable. You can go by tram/metro to airport and sloterdijk.

Very small, clean room, very comfortable (soft) bed, steep stairs, good location, and kind, helpful staff! I actually like the steep stairs but I wouldn't recommend them for an older person.

What a awesome stay! We didn't really check it out completely but it was such a nice surprise. We arrived there and I use a wheelchair sometimes but they don't have elevators which isn't a issue for me. But the gentleman at the front desk told us we could store it at the baggage area. He showed us the room and it was very nice. I was kinda scared it was very small and loud but the room was actually big? We had a shower in the room which was nice but the toilets weren't in the room. But it wasn't an issue, the toilets were so clean too it was so so nice. Furthermore the hotel was nice clean and warm I have no complains. Even as a wheelchair user (who can walk up the stairs) it was very nice there is a metro close by and even then it's a 20 minute walk to the dam. All in all it was a super nice stay would go here again.

We were delighted to be greeted with such an enthusiastic reception. Dennis, Louise, and gang were fantastic hosts and gave great tips and locations to visit, which were more local and less of a tourist trap. The building is quirky and well located - easy to find. The bedroom was fine. It was on the third floor, which I found steep, but that is the beauty of this city with these quirky buildings, and we enjoyed the walking, so no problem. We had everything we needed while on our trip. Thanks so much. 💖

I loved my stay here- staff went above and beyond making me feel welcome throughout my stay! Special mention goes to the young lady behind the desk and the blonde housekeeper lady both were real highlights of my stay and gave excellent service. Also located in an under rated but lovley area of Amsterdam. I look forward to staying again in future

nice family hotel. typical Amsterdam house with living in a confined space. Rooms are available from the first floor with a shower. Toilet in the hallway. That doesn't bother. Breakfast optional. The location is good. various local from breakfast to dinner around the corner. Good location to the city. Tram nearby. 3.9 out of 5 stars

Amazing location (out of the way from main roads but everything is still walking distance). Small rooms but very comfy. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Would absolutely stay again!

Nice welcoming place with friendly English speaking staff. It's in a nice quiet part of the city. The breakfast is good and included in the room rate. The tram is easy accessible to the city centre and Amsterdam Central. Room are very small and very basic which is ok for one person. The television only had 2 stations and neither were working very well which was a bit of a shame.

The staff are very nice people. we were 2 in one room. i can say its a hostel not a hotel. very small beds (mini-bed) even not suitable for kids. very limited toilet space you can't even set. there is a heavy machinery sound started from 8am. despite that the location is not bad.

This location is great and easily to enter to other places. I stayed 3Nights and staff were really nice. They provided breakfast free and you can drink coffee till 11pm. As a solo travel the room is bit small but it was okay for me. Well recommend!

Lovely and welcoming! Staff speak wonderful English and they're very friendly and kind. The facilities are modern and the location of the hotel is great - super close to tonnes of bars and restaurants as well as attractions like the zoo and the opera and ballet house. Highly recommended

Couldnt find anything to complain about here except that our room was rather hot :) staff were all very friendly, stairs gave you a good challenge if you had a bit too much to drink but our stay was nice and we got what we expected.
