We didn't stay at Tropicana, but we did the acatenango tour. We heard beforehand that we needed to stay in a tent, which obviously wasn't great, but they provided us with any extra clothing/equipment we needed, free of charge which was great. Upon arrival of the campsite, we immediately noticed that the tent's zipper was broken. Even though the entire tour was organized very well and we had a great time, the tent situation definitely brought us all down a bit as it meant we basically slept outside.. We were cold the entire night as the wind came into the tent. Therefore wouldn't book again, as we were in disbelief how such a situation could happen when it's around -10 outside..

We did the hike with them and the guides were amazing, loved the hike as well! Sadly we had shocking weather but can't be helped. Unfortunately the gear provided was average at best, my backpack was broken so had to swap it out, my head torch wasn't even charged (luckily the weather was too bad to summit for sunrise or I would have been climbing without a torch!!) and numerous others had issues with their gear as well. The accommodation is better than tents, but only just. And accommodation in the hostel the night before was a pain, my bed didn't have a curtain and was right next to the toilets so I was woken each time someone went to the loo. Additionally there's very few toilets for the number of people staying meaning there's often lines. Bar was good at least and the free breakfast was nice, but I definitely wouldn't want to stay here again, and while the volcano tour was fantastic they seriously let people down with the gear provided.

Tropicana hostel is more than just a place to stay- it’s a full experience. I have been to 43 countries and stayed at hostels all over the world. This being said, Tropicana has a special place in my heart. Firstly, the staff is super friendly and will go out of their way to assist guests. Secondly, the hostel has everything you need- the food in the restaurant is superb and affordable. The roof top terrace is one of the best in Antigua. It is perfect for spending the day lounging and even has a full gym to work out. Because of my busy schedule I am often doing computer work. Working on the computer with volcano views makes for the perfect office space. I have been to Tropicana many times and every time I return, I M surprised by improvements. If you are coming to Antigua, staying at Tropicana is a must.

Canadian boy here. I've traveled to over 25 countries and this is hands down in my top five hostels I've ever stayed at!!! Awesome atmosphere, phenomenal owners, beautiful views on the rooftop. A pretty epic pool to hang out by with beautiful woman 😍 Owner Irish Dean and the other super tall somewhat bald dude I think his name is Joep? Are an absolute beauties. Super approachable and truthful in regards to what events are happening that week in the city. Food is freshly cooked and homemade daily. They also hosted a pretty epic Canada Day party when I was there and St Patty's Day party! I love you Tropicana!!! Cheers and much love from Alberta, Canada!

Tropicana was by far the best hostel we stayed at in Antigua! We really enjoyed happy hour on the roof top terrace and being able to relax by the pool the next day. The beds are super comfy and the staff are so friendly! We also did the volcano hike with Tropicana as we heard they were the best to go with and they definitely were! We got to stay in cabins when we made it to the top instead of tents which really made a difference!!

We did the acatenango hike. This was a really nice experience, but the group was massive. +30 persons, which means the slowest person sets the pace. The guides were enthusiastic and outgoing, but with a group of more than 30 persons, it was hard to get in audience. It also delayed the itinerary a couple of hours with the result of having to walk a lot after dark to fuego. Don't underestimate the physical challenge even if you are an athletic person. The extended tour added up to 21 km with a 2000 moh. Climb.

Tropicana Hostel was a great place to stay. It’s extremely social and they make seeing Guatemala easy by providing shuttle service wherever you need to go. The Acatenango hike they organize is well worth it, but remember to stay dry as much as you can (if you’re hiking during non-dry season). The hostel is rather loud with their bar close to a lot of the rooms, so if that’s not your vibe this might not be the hostel for you. There’s also no kitchen for guests to use in this hostel. Free coffee, water, and WiFi. Staff is super friendly. A place to consider if you want to meet a ton of people while staying in Antigua!

Good spot to stay for the price but book ahead of time gets booked quickly. has a pool, rooftop bar great staff that's very helpful with any questions. It's a party hostel so getting sleep is not the best also not many showers or restrooms so plan the time you choose to go in.

Don't know about the hostel, but we booked a volcano hike tour and it was amazing. Nice guides, good accomodation, stunning view on the volcano. It was worth the three days of sore muscles! :'D

Booked a private room for my partner and I at Tropicana and had a pretty brutal experience. Our room was above one of the main hostel bathrooms, and for some insane reason had a handful of glass panes on the floor (picture attached). All night, whenever anyone used the bathroom below us, our entire room would light up. I’d run down a flight of stairs to turn them off just for it to happen again 20 minutes later. I eventually gave up and just tried to sleep in a bright room. They also don’t allow outside alcohol which is fine, but their bar has pretty tragic service. Watched the bartender make some elaborate drink for a staff member that just walked up, as a bunch of guests continued to wait 15+ minutes for a beer off the tap. There are so many nice hostels and hotels in this town. Definitely would not stay here again.

overall, this was a good stay. I do wish the rooms were more separated from the bar area, and for that reason I personally would not stay again. I know it’s a party hostel so you must expect it to be loud, but I have stayed at party hostels with better separation of spaces. also the live in staff were quite loud at all hours of the night. however, I would certainly recommend this hostel to anyone coming to Antigua! if you don’t mind the constant noise, it really is a great and affordable place to stay.

We completed the volcano tour with Tropicana and they were 10/10. Excellent staff and service. Have all of the extra warm clothes you may need (and are actually washed in between uses). They let you shower after the hike as well!

We did the volcano tour and it was incredible! Amazing staff that accommodated some of our crew that needed a vegan diet. Thanks for the great memorable experience

Tropicana hostel is a vibey place with a great rooftop bar that does very cheap drinks during happy hour! It also has a great view of the Acatenango volcano. It is very clean, the showers and toilets work perfectly, and you meet cool people from all over the world. Would 100% recommend staying here.

  • 5/5 Kaluna B. 1 year ago on Google
The staff is really friendly and we felt welcome during our stay! There are a lot of cool little corners to rest and have a fresh drink. Also we just came back from our hike to Acatenango with Tropicana and we had a blast! Totally recommend :)

Great and affordable hostel with a nice location. Rooms are clean and the staff is very welcoming. By taking their tour of the Acatenango Trek you get a discount for your stay as well. A great place to enjoy Antigua!

The atmosphere here was amazing. The roof top bar to see the volcanoes is epic. But what made it was the people working. The service, the prices and the quality makes you feel like you need to move here.

Best hostel in Antigua! Great vibes, super comfy dorms, amazing rooftop view, kindest staff ever. 10/10 would recommend.

I loved my stay at Tropicana. I stayed for 4 nights and had loads of fun. There are curtains on the beds which allows for intimacy and a locker above the bed which i loved. If I come back to Antigua I will stay again.

I went on the Acatenango overnight hike with Tropicana and it was very worth it. Extremely difficult and rewarding but the team at the hostel and on the volcano made sure everyone went at a comfortable pace and got to the end destination. Recommend any extra hikes the guides offer like the sunrise hike, and any treats they offer like hot chocolate! The transfers and returns on rentals was a stress free process!

I would not come again. The toilets were almost always dirty, in the very tiny showers you have almost no privacy, because it is directly in the hallway to the roof top bar. My mattress was completely worn out so I maybe slept for about 3 hours. As you book an hostel to sleep overnight, thus is saved money here at the completely wrong corner. I think it is completely overrated. Even the volcano tour is the most expensive, there are significantly cheaper tours by locals in Antigua.

Pretty chill Hostal, lots of social people, cool place to stay if you are solo travelling especially. Minor detail, we didn't stay here.... We just waited on our shuttle, had a sandwich and the lady asked us to leave a review, waited for us to type and made a picture when it's done. IMO reviews needs to be earned , not bought with a free drink.

Awesome hostel!! The rooms, bathrooms, and pool were super clean. Right in the middle of Antigua. Big fan of the hammocks and roof top bar.

Great hostel! Really good price and gave discount for doing the volcano hike through them. Quiet despite the large rooms. Good social! Also very clean!!

I love Tropicana! The vibe, the staff, the view, the food and the drinks are so awesome. I booked the Acatenengo Hike with them and it was the highlight of my trip. The arrangements were so great. The guides were so lovely and at the hostel they got all the equipments that you might need, in case you forgot to pack your gears! They gave us 3 meals (I am vegan, so they arranged that for me too :D). We had frequent stops on the way to the top (5-7stops), the sleeping up there was so comfortable. I was in a room for another 4 other girls (they were so nice) the sleeping bag was so warm and just so comfortable! They even had wine and Marshmellos at night with that stunning view of the Volcano Erupting! I booked with them as well a night before I headed back home. The dorm room (12 beds) was so nice and the people I shared the room with were so great. They made my last night in Antigua very memorable in the most beautiful way. Thank you so much Tropicana, I will definitely be back ❤️

Great hostel overall. Very social and very clean. It is basically impossible to sleep in the morning if you are in the room next to the bar but the rooms away from the bar are amazing. Amazing and kind staff. SO to Rob for being awesome.

Amazing staff and fun amenities (hammocks, rooftop bar etc.) However.. I would not stay again due to our room feeling unclean and uncomfortable. There was a dirty sock and a cheeto on the ground when we arrived. The bed doesnt have a top sheet. The showers are in odd locations. But if these things don't bother you and the amenities and fun excite you, you will enjoy your pick!

Great hostel for the price. Plenty of bathrooms. The staff is always cleaning which I appreciate. Great location in Antigua. Very social vibe. I would definitely stay here again

Pros: Great location Staff is friendly and helpful Bathrooms and common areas are clean. Happy hour every day 3-6PM. Cons: It’s so loud. The music stops at 10, but there’s music all day. You get there from the airport or wherever and you want to rest, but the music is on. Since the rooms are shared by 14 people going in and out it’s really hard to get more than 2 hours of sleep in a row. Beds are also wobbly so that if the person beneath you or next to you turns over in their sleep or sneezes, your bed will feel it too.

Such a nice hostel. One of the best I've been to in Central America! Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice dorms with curtains. You should book in advance as it's fully booked almost everyday!

!!! Edit: AFTER SLEEPING IN THEIR CABINS I HAVE GOT LICES!!!! PIOJOS!!! My head started itching the afternoon after the hike and the next few days, but on the beginning I thought that it’s just the dust from the hike. I was sooo wrong. BE CAREFUL!!! And Tropicana - wash your pillows, blankets and sleeping bags more often because this is awful : ( (Unfortunately i need to change my review to 1 star). . . . We did the Acatenango tour and even though the group was big (36people) everything went smoothly. The food they’re providing is tasty and in really decent portions. The guides were great and they are staying with slower ones behind and support :) The hike itself is really demanding and it took us 6h to get to the top. The cabins are basic with thin mattresses and I don’t know when was the last time the sleeping bags were washed or changed. I would recommend to take your own sheets at least. The temperature wise, it wasn’t that bad in the cabin though. Also, on the way down I noticed that they used a horse instead of the porter. In general, we had a nice weather and we’re able to experience everything so I am really happy with the tour.

Didn’t stay at the hostel, but did the Acatenango 2 day tour. It was very well organized and we got to sleep in cabins during the night. All meals were prepared by them. All I needed to take was water, warm clothes and snacks. There was people who had trouble getting up and down, and they made sure not leave anyone behind. The staff treated us well and were really friendly.

The Tropicana has a great location, a really nice bar and most importantly, an amazing tour to Acatenango with incredible views of the Fuego Volcano. Here I'm rating the hostel and not the experience itself, as I sadly had money stolen from my backpack (in a private room) during my stay and the staff was not very responsive nor supportive when I reported this. Still objectively seen, a good hostel.

Came here for the bar. The rooftop is really lovely but seems to close early. Drinks are well priced. Lots of tourist here as it is attached to a hostel.

A party hostel with a happy hour from 9AM to 6 PM (Q10 for a beer) and people are very friendly! Good place to hang out even if you're not staying there!

I both stayed and did the volcano tour with Tropicana. Couldn’t recommend it enough. Tour was well organised and definitely the best in the area. The hostel was clean, social and had a really good happy hour on a beautiful terrace overlooking the volcano. A must stay

Overall a good hostel but the people are a bit too layed back and not really approachable. The staff was good but the bar and kitchen are slow. The highest of the three high dorm bed is a actually difficult 😅. You can however have some good drinks here and the pool with good weather is amazing

Tropicana is everything you need in a hostel: the people that work there, the food, bartenders, bar crawl, activities, and DAILY happy hour made our experience one of a kind. A great mix of local and foreign guests/visitors that we were looking for. Would 100% recommend to couples, solo travelers, and friends looking for a fun, lively, and accommodating hostel.

  • 5/5 Mette N. 1 year ago on Google
The hostel was very good! It is a big hostel, with a lot of young backpackers looking for a nice party and a lot og them is also doing the trek so if you are looking for privacy this is not the place. However in term of music this is turned off at 10 pm so that was not a problem. The staff were very helpful both in terms of helping with airport transportation and other helpfull tips

  • 5/5 Joshua M. 1 year ago on Google
The staff is extremely helpful and the rooms are great! An amazing vibe for a hostel and the daily deals help a lot at the bar. Our bartender got off work and took a ton of people staying here to the best dinner place and bars around.

  • 5/5 Rob S. 1 year ago on Google
Top Hostel in Antigua. Arrived 2 days before my Volcano Tour - got to know some people before the trek. Great Bar and Rooftop Patio, good food, very helpful staff. Laundry on site, the first HOT shower I've had in 5 weeks of travelling CA, clean bathrooms, showers, and rooms. This hostel is a 1minute walk from the main square of the city! Highly Recommended!

  • 5/5 Laurent G. 1 year ago on Google
The place is really amazing and the staff is really helpful. We stayed there for three nights, and booked the Acatenango volcano hike with them as well. It was an amazing experience with Tropicana, super safe and friendly. Every night you can go drink and spin the wheel for free shots or funny consequences which closes at 10:30pm if ever you want to sleep earlier. I recommend this place to anybody who wants a good time in antigua!!

The staff at Tropicana are so helpful with both the volcano hike and shuttle services. The rooms are basic but comfortable and they have hot showers! Which I’ve struggled to find in Guatamala. Very good value for money, also the rooftop is stunning.

If you’re considering doing the Acatenango hike with them, you should do it this instant! The tour guides were so amazing with us. Even though I was the very last of my group, Adolfo, one of the guides, went with me the whole way and kept me motivated. Once at the top, they made sure we had such a special memory of this adventure, they brought us wine, prepared yummy food and even brought us hot choco and marshmallows to enjoy around the campfire. I’m so grateful i went with this option!!!

i had a great stay with Tropicana. Don’t be put off by the fact it’s a party hostel because it always gets quiet around 11 - i was lucky enough to be in the room furthest away from the bar. There’s a bar crawl almost every night. Bunks are 3 high so can be difficult.

Amazing place to stay with a lovely rooftop and great location! I booked the Acatenango hike with them and It was such an incredible experience. Food was excellent, lovely guide, amazing views from our base camp! Thanks for everything Tropicana! =)

It is the best Acatanenango tour in all of Antigua. the best food options, the best and most trained guides that can exist. They have a hostel on the volcano that is one of the most complete. I'm leaving the country with a nice memory of Tropicana! The best of all time! thank you
