Cheapest way I found of climbing Acatenango and sleeping there. At the end, it's cheap for a reason: material is in a bit of a worse condition, tents aren't so comfortable, no headlights, the guides didn't speak English, the information of what to carry was not really clear... Nevertheless, the hike itself, the views at the top and the Fuego eruptions, those don't get any better, doesn't matter how much you pay. The guides, Francisco and his little helper, were really nice and very helpful. The tent and fireplace are at an amazing spot to see the lava eruptions. It was a one in a lifetime experience!

With all the restrictions faced, the responsibility involved, and the logistics of the popular volcano sightseeing tour (overnight stay in tents) these guys know what they re doing. It's not easy, especially bearing in mind the reasonable price one pays...definitely a recommended highlight of my stay in Antigua ( and yes, it's quite a challenge but I loved it) ! Thank you to every one of you !! (And the horse)

Good cheap way to climb to volcano. We had a lovely time. Small group of 7 which is so much better than the other tours who have 20+ people. Camp was good big tent for everyone. Fire pit to keep warm. They gave us winter coat, hats n gloves included. Food was also nice. We took extra snacks. 2 things to note. Guide only spoke Spanish & they said walking sticks were included but they weren't.

I've just returned from the Acatenango trek with Borca Expeditions. Booked through an agent called Adonis for GTQ 250 it provided excellent value for money. The transportation arrived on time, the agency provided us with jackets, beanies and whatnot for free. We did have to carry our own lunch with us but it was pretty light so it didn't pose any problem. The trek itself was very well organized (10 ppl in my group, 2 guides), both guides kept a close eye on everyone in the group so that nobody would get lost. They didn't push us, rather encouraged with a smile, and if anyone was lagging they stopped the whole group so that the person could rejoin them. When we arrived at the base camp we found out that the sleeping arrangements consisted of a huge covered communal sleeping area, which was a very solid construction well protected from wind. We were also shown mattresses and sleeping bags to cover ourselves with. After we arrived at the base, at around 4 p.m. we were given approximately 3 hours to wind down and fireplace was set up by the guides. That gave us ample time to enjoy the weather getting better, enabling us to admire Fuego volcano spitting lava and ashes. In the morning we started the rrek up to the summit at 4 a.m. on point but once again the guides made sure that everybody stayed with the rest of the group. Apart from that we were provided with three meals: lunch plus dinner on day one, and breakfast on day 2. They were enough for me and I didn't feel hungry at all. On top of that there was also hot tea, chocolate, and coffee for free. It certainly wasn't the best possible agency as you might expect more of a trek like that but given the price I paid I couldn't have asked for more and they certainly exceeded my expectations. Without any shadow of a doubt I would recommend them as an agency of choice for the trek. Good job, guys. Timing of the trek itself: 4 hours from the bus stop at the foot of the volcano to the base camp, inclusive of a 30-minute lunch break midway through, approx. 75 minutes to the summit on day 2, 2 hrs' descent to the bus stop.

They have the cheapest Acatenango trip in town. Guides are good, but the equipment like clothes, tents and sleepingbag are very old and worn out. My sleepingbag didnt have a zipper. For the price, you get what you pay for. The most boring thing about this company is that they use almost 2 hours to pick up people in town before the hike, rather than make Everyone meet at the same place. On our way back from the hike, we had to wait 1.5 hours for the driver to pick us up.

Great value for money! Our guide Jose was super friendly and we were provided with enough good food and hot drinks. Only con was that our guide did not speak any English, but with hands, feet and Google translate we managed

I had a horrible experience with this tour group. I did the volcano hike. The accommodations where dirty, cold and extremely uncomfortable. You have to sleep elbow to elbow with 12 people in a poorly constructed tarp tent. I had back pain all night from the terrible pads. I didnt sleep at all. I kept getting woken up by other people snoring, the pain in my body and the girl next to me who would turn and bump me every 30min. I later learned this is the least expensive tour group to go with and you get what you pay for. Not worth it if you care about being comfortable and having an enjoyable experience.

Thank you Barco for the most amazing expedition! We had a great time climbing Acatenango, the trek is tough but our local guides made sure we were all okay and were in high spirits at all times. Our camp had great views of Fuego and was a rustic cabin with shared sleeping arrangement. We had great lunch, dinner and breakfast aswell as fast Cacao and marshmallows at base camp. We were also offered extra layers before we set off including hats, gloves and coats. Only extra benefit would be a headtorch. I’d highly recommend for people looking to climb the volcanos in a cost effective way :)

The other reviews about the Volcano tour have it spot on. Too many people cramped into tiny little shacks, not enough individual attention, and constantly stopping to make sure the slower folks can keep up. I wish I could re-book with a more personal tour company. Only silver lining was the guides were really nice and worked hard. Too bad they only get paid a fraction of what you pay.

A great tour with helpful guides. People complain here about the guides not speaking English but if youre ignorant enough to not ask whether they do before you book it, thats your own fault. They do speak a little english and try to speak with you but generally its not difficult to communicate. The people you speak to most are those on the tour with you. The camp site was fine and the hike was well organised. The shuttle in the morning does pick up a lot of people and its a big group on some days, ours was 20, but the day after it was only 8. Just depends on luck. Either way the team do their best and id use them again.

as a group of 7 boys wanting to not pay the ridiculous price that trop*cana slapped down, we risked it all by following Moises and his 10 commandments. unreal price for sleeping in a cabin not a tent, getting 3 meals plus marshmallows, coffee, hot chocolate, and very warm gloves coats hats and not so warm water. so so so worth the price and can’t recommend enough! shout out Moises and his mate xoxox

We booked the Acatenago overnight hike through our hostal Morenos in Antigua and the tour was run by Barco Expeditions with our guide Brandon. Brandon was a fantastic guide at making sure the group maintained a good pace on the hike and would always wait for those who fell behind. He cooked delicious pasta for dinner, made us hot chocolate and provided marshmallows and made us warm porridge with bananas for breakfast. Unfortunately we didn't get to do the sunrise hike because of a storm but overall Brandon made the experience enjoyable and kept group morale high. Highly recommended asking for Brandon as your guide on the hike!

We found this tour company while walking around in Antigua. Let's note that we wanted to start the hike in the evening since we were short on time. She booked us the tour with a guide for that evening. It would cost 500Q + 100 q entry. She told us it would include clothes rental (jacket, pants, gloves, and beanie), dinner, breakfast, water, and a place to store our bags. Mind you, the price was higher because it was just the 2 of us so it was pretty much a private tour. It was a little weird meeting at the office which was closed. The driver drove the 2 of us to her house saying we would have dinner there. When we arrived he told us to wait in the car. They brought the winter clothes out for us to try on. Then told us we had to buy our own water at the convenient store and there was no dinner. We bought a few more snacks to make up for it. Then, the driver drove us 45ish minutes to the entrance where we we paid the guide 100 q for the entrance fee (which was odd since the entrance office wasn't there and nor was it open when we passed it). We also had to pay 10 q per bag to be stored at some house. The hike itself was fine. The tour guide didn't really engage with us. He just knew the route so we followed. He didn't speak English which wasn't an issue since we both have some Spanish background. The hike was strenuous, but not technical like other hikes either of us have done. My partner does trekking and backpacking and I'm an avid runner so you can gage based on our fitness level. We arrived at 12:30PM and took a nap. The hut wasn't bad and wasn't crowded as other people said, but we were also here during off season. The sleeping bags were old and probably never washed, but I didn't expect too much there. At 3:45AM, the guide called us up to hike to the peak for sunrise. At one point he went so far ahead, he left us and we ended up walking on the sandy path instead of the trail which was annoying. After sunrise, we came back for breakfast. He didn't have enough water to make us our oatmeal so I had to give him part of my second bottle. Seriously, what the hell. We descended pretty quickly afterwards, but he kept stopping since the shuttle wasn't coming until around 10AM so lots of wasted time. Overall, if you're looking to do the overnight tour with them, make sure to make them write down what you're getting and ask for a dinner to go like a sandwich, but who knows if they'll give it to you. You can request meeting at the office earlier, which we did (6:30PM) to start the actual hike at 8:30PM. If you're not planning to do as aggressive of a hike as we did, I STRONGLY recommend doing it with another tour company. It truly is you get what you pay for. I'm sure there are other tour companies that might do this hike on fast forward, but again, since we were short on time, we didn't look around too much.

Wonderful hike, would definitely recommend! If you book here you can be sure your money goes 100% to Guatemalan people and not to an overpriced foreign agency. As others said it's the cheapest agency (250 quetzales) so don't expect anything luxurious. Even though they don't speak english the guides Francisco and Caesar are super friendly and always in good mood, happy to help and cheer you up when you're about to die of exhaustion... Once you're up on Acatenango you won't care how you got there as its absolutely breathtaking and the view is absolutely worth it! Included: Sleeping bag, hats, gloves, jackets, backpack, 3l of water, lunch, dinner, breakfast, hot chocolate, shared tent. Recommendations: No matter how experienced you think you are: get walking sticks!! It's sandy nd therefore very slippery, especially on your way down. Sleeping bags are cheap so bring warm clothing for your stay overnight and fresh clothing for your hike back down. You don't want to do that in warm or already sweaty clothing. Bring some snacks. Every hour you will take a short break and will probably need some nuts or something. Some of the break spots offer gatorade and other beverages. Both helps with the exhaustion of the hike.

This agency is a joke, but not a good one. They're the cheapest for a reason. We booked two shuttles with them... first time was "alright", although the communication was really bad, they pretty much ghost their customers. Second time was awful, with the ghosting, but they also gave us the wrong departure time. Not only once, but many times ! So we had to wait for a really long time. Just go anywhere else and pay 10Q extra, really not worth the hassle.

It is the cheapest of Antigua's volcano tour companies. Cheap doesn't mean bad service. All tours are the same, so I recommend doing it here, which is a little cheaper.

Bad service! Booked a day tour to the Pacaya volcano one day in advance (actually 10 hours in advance). Got sick the night before (food poisoning). Called us sick more than half an hour before pick-up. They said back they're coming anyway and if we don't get on the bus, we still pay the full amount. We didn't go simple because were sick. They didn't gave us another day to go on tour or at least a discount. In our experience just mean and very bad service!! We couldn't do anything about it.
