On my many walkabouts in central Athens I often pass by this special location with so much history! It's truly a must visit location that I believe .... all are bound to admire👍😊👍😊 ... any season of the year! 😍

You should certainly take a stroll through history when the Roman Forum is open during the day, but let me give you a tip - make sure to see it in the evening. The view, as you can see, is worth it!

Amazing to see this historical monument, which was on my bucket list! Actually I did not go inside due to lack of time, but just saw it from through the gates, but still it was a great view! This was a stop on the free "Rick Steves Athens City Walk" audio which I was listening to. He talked us through the rich history which made seeing it all the more meaningful. The audio tour is available for free download online so I highly recommend when visiting Athens!

Definitely visit this place if doublet the Ticket for all the sites. It’s not the most impressive of all sites in Athens, but it does have its charm. The tower of the Winds for example is considered to be the worlds first meteorological station. So considering that, definitely worth a visit.

There is not much left of the Roman Agora aside from the tower of the winds, and that is pretty much the only interesting thing to see there. Is it worth the price of admission? I did not think so so I viewed it from outside, though at nigh, I did see people jump the fence and sneak onto the grounds...

We visited on the Athens Combo Pass (you can get this online or at the Acropolis). It’s so interesting to see the differences between the Roman Agora and the ancient agora. You maybe need 45 minutes to explore and take in the site, but it is filled with mosaics and history. 100% worth seeing and I recommend keeping an eye out for turtles and kitties.

Pretty good, takes 15 - 30 minutes max - coming from a History teacher, could do with more information on the items found in the site. Felt like most of the stuff was piled up and left on the side. A bit of investment in restoration is needed.

(Translated by Google) Although most people know about the Athens of classical times and the greatness of its culture in the years of Pericles, their knowledge or interest in the history of Athens during the Roman years is quite limited. After 146 BC. the Romans prevailed throughout Greece and the Roman army besieged and looted Athens. Naturally, a large part of the ancient Agora was destroyed, while many sculptures were removed and appropriated. Of course, the famous and rich Romans admired the grandeur and culture of Athens and even visited it to attend classes in philosophy and rhetoric. With the passage of time and the political changes that followed, the new Agora of Athens was founded, which is also known as the Roman Agora. This new market was built at the intersection of the road coming from the Acropolis with the road leading from the Ancient Agora to the east. This market was the center of commercial activity during Roman times, with the main activity being the oil trade. It was an almost square building with an internal colonnade that housed the shops and had two entrances, one east and one west. In fact, the western one was called "Gate of Chief Athena" because of the inscription it carried on its entablature. The Agora had a Roman architectural form, but in terms of rhythm and methods it followed the classical tradition. Today, the Roman Agora is located in Monastiraki, at the junction of Pelopida, Markou Aureliou streets (Original)

Agree with other reviewers that while you should enter while you pass with a combi ticket, it’s hardly the most impressive sight. Partly this can be explained by the scarce information provided on sight. There is a lot on architectural details but almost nothing on the bigger picture, historical context. We found interesting commentary online but wish the management would simply provide more of an open museum experience.

The entrance to the Roman Agora is included in the €30 combo pass. Remains of the Roman Agora, which is predominantly an open space with some ruins and peristyle surrounding it. The Horologion / Tower of the Wind is located in this premise. Overall, a very decent site with a rich history, and one should definitely visit this together with the Acropolis.

Nice ruine but the only interesting thing is the tower and few pillars, so I don't think it is worth entering inside. You can still see the tower very well from outside.

We bought the combo ticket, so we took advantage and went into every site included. The Roman Agora has a few columns still standing and is not very much visually. However, I love history, and reading the history behind it and standing in the same spot all this went on at was awesome!

It’s and open ground site so barely shaded. Hard to visit during peak sun time. Not impressive while compared to other structures around. The site lacks informational boards except for one structure. You need to read about the Roman Forum ahead of time to appreciate its history. It’s a good to see site, but if time is limited in Athens then you could skip it.

Also a must after your trip to the Acropolis and the Partenon, but it's a quick tour and I would prefer some more explanations and maybe a few representations of how it was before (in this day and age, maybe some 3D rendering or holograms? Just a few ideas.). But don't miss it, anyway.

(Translated by Google) The Roman market with its majestic western main gate of Athena the Archangel, built at the request of the Athenians to Julius Caesar, which was financed and completed by Octavian Augustus. Very important archeological site as it includes the beautiful tower of Aerides or Kirikos which is the oldest surviving Meteorological station in the world. The east gate is also preserved in less good condition. Definitely worth a visit.

I just visited as I had the ticket package and walked passed it. Don't get bothered by the Ghana guys and don't take their bracelet. There is nothing inside you cant see from the outside, spend 10 min here. It's good though if you need to get your ticket package to visit the Acropolis (no line here)

Personal choice, obviously, but I wouldn’t make a special trip to the Roman Forum. It’s worth seeing if you are in the area or passing already, but overall it pales in comparison to most of the other sites. The history and imagining what happened at that spot is astounding, but it was underwhelming after seeing the Ancient Agora, Parthenon, Hadrian’s Library, etc.

Only saw from the outside and hills as whole site closed due to snow! Utterly amazing site though and you can still imagine the hussle and bustle of this being the centre of trade and social gatherings. Beautiful. Only downside is the modern railway line going straight through the middle of it!

Update July 2022 Most impressive are forum gates …. Admission required to go into gate ground and see up close. You can get combo ticket with agora or just one site at a time. Having those sites located right in historical centre town / tourist area is definitely easy access. As the weather was scorching hot, I did not feel like walking in the blazing sun for an hour so I simply walked around it’s perimeters. The great thing about this site is that you can Pretty much of view all the archeological sites from the outside gate; either from elevated area our same surface level. The good thing about the elevated area is it’s quite shaded with a few trees and sitting down places as well. As you can see all the pictures were taken from a different angle from the outside.

I probably wouldn't have visited the Roman Agora had I not bought a combined ticket that included it as part of a package. Most of what is to be seen is visible from the outside, but it's fun to walk around and see things up close.

If you're looking to explore some amazing architecture, the Roman Forum of Athens is a great place to start. Arrive early to buy your tickets, and then take your time wandering around the ruins. It's truly a fascinating place, and you'll be able to learn a lot about the history of the city.

The place is nice in terms of history and what we learn. But I am disappointed, it is much less spectacular than the rest of the ruins of Athens. Positive point is that there are much less people than at the accropolis! Beware of the tourist scammers around the site.

Amazing place to visit! Really gives you some insight into the daily lives of the ancient Greeks. There really isn’t a lot of shade so i recommend you pick your time to visit wisely. I visited during the afternoon and it was super warm! There were only a few visitors there besides my group, so it was relatively calm. Make sure you read all the information on the signs as this will make you understand this place much better.

Amazing place to visit, you can actually walk around in the grass among the ruins. Was not busy at all when we went and our toddler enjoyed running around peacefully. It's not too big of a site so you can see it relatively quickly if needed.

Roman Agora is quite small compare to ancient Agora or to acropolis. If you bought combined ticket for 30e it's included with other sites and it's not far. A Ágora Romana era uma construção destinada a fins comerciais e foi construída pelo imperador romano Augustus, entre 19 a. C. e 11 a.

The Roman Agora (Greek: Ρωμαϊκή Αγορά) at Athens is located to the north of the Acropolis and to the east of the Ancient Agora. The original Agora was encroached upon and obstructed by a series of Roman buildings, beginning with the imperial family's gift to the Athenians of a large odeion (concert hall). The Odeon of Agrippa was built by him in around 15 BC, and measured 51.4 by 43.2 metres, rose several stories in height, and – being sited just north of the Middle Stoa – obstructed the old agora. In return for the odeion, the Athenians built a statue to Agrippa at the site of the previous agora; they based it on a plinth recycled from an earlier statue by covering the old inscription with a new one.

A very good agora, but it also has some fabulous Greek buildings 🏛 - the gorgeous Tower of the Winds, Attalid stoa etc - not just Roman buildings.

  • 4/5 Carole A. 2 years ago on Google
This won't be on the top of your list of places to visit but if you have the combi ticket, it's worth popping in for a wander. Otherwise you can see most of it from outside the railings. We entered 10 minutes from closing time so couldn't spend too long looking at anything; that said, we don't feel that we missed out on much either.

  • 3/5 CsabaJ 2 years ago on Google
Entrance is a bit overpriced for the small yard of archeological sites, as it costs 8EUR to enter, but at least its kept clean and has descriptive boards for some ruins. You can also buy a 5 day pass valid for multiple archeological sites for 30EUR (each site has different entry prices, most expensive is the Acropolis). At the ticket office you can find drinkable water and toilets.

  • 3/5 Mike X. 2 years ago on Google
As a standalone site there is not much to see or much information to read on placards. I think the main reason people come here is either they already have a combo ticket (this site is included) or the life hack of buying your acropolis ticket/combo ticket here. The better view is from the street overlooking it to the South.

Diving in history. Beautiful place but sooo hot in the summer and no place to hide in the shadows. Anyway it's worth it.

  • 5/5 Luke 2 years ago on Google
Stumbled here by chance worth a visit even if your not going to go in. It's easy to get to after coming down from the acropolis.

Worth seeing if you have the 30euro ticket. But you can see most of it from the outside the gate for free

  • 2/5 Bianca 1 year ago on Google
You can see everything from the outside. When we were there the tower closed earlier and we weren't informed, so we wasted our combiticket. Best thing about the side are the cats.

  • 3/5 Robert C. 1 year ago on Google
There is not much left of the Roman Agora aside from the tower of the winds and that is pretty much the only interesting thing to see there. Is it worth the price of admission. I did not think so, so I viewed it from outside, though at nigh, I did see people jump the fence and sneak onto the grounds...

  • 5/5 Jeevan Y. 2 years ago on Google
Acropolis is a must visit in Athens. Honestly, I don't think paying for any attractions i.e.. agoras, museums for €30 is worth it cos one can get fantastic views just walking outside. Acropolis can agora, purchased for €10 entry and there weren't long queues like mentioned. Most of the old city is destroyed and very few remains left and they are under renovation. Plaka offers some good options for food, drink, appertiv etc.. Overall worth the experience

  • 4/5 Anamaria Dutceac S. 1 year ago on Google
The remnants of the Roman forum are not so numerous or so well preserved as to really impress the visitor, in my view. One needs a lot of imagination to get the columns and stones to come to life. It is worthy to pay for the ticket only if you plan to visit all the other Ancient historical sites, otherwise you can see most things from the outside. Actually, my favorite view is from high above the perimeter, outside the yard. There you can get a feeling for the size of the place.

  • 5/5 Amanda C. 1 year ago on Google
A small park area encompassing an ancient marketplace. Really quick to stroll through, in full view of the acropolis and just a short walk from the Agora.

  • 5/5 Marin “SayanMk” K. 1 year ago on Google
Buy the combined ticket online. You then just scan or show it at the entrance. Highly recommended! As for the Roman Agora remains - it's in 4th place from my experience. Good looking pieces but what I liked most was the small tower behind the main entrance. Location is very central, you can't miss it.

If you are into Greek history and mythology this is the perfect place for you. The site is huge with a lot of things to see from ruins to temples of Ares and Hephaestus to graves to columns to the Stoa of Attalos etc. Also the museum was very impressive with the amount of history you can get. Also we got to enter for free to every sight in the weekend we visited so it was a win-win situation for us. Bottom line if you’re are in Athens, even for a few days this is a must.

  • 4/5 Isabella 1 year ago on Google
The site is small, 15/20 minutes are enough. It's part of the pass, but if you are under 25 you need to the ticket at every site's entrance (but it's free). Again, the only critique is the lack of audio guide or general information regarding the history of the structures.

  • 4/5 Uday M. 1 year ago on Google
This small site is just down the hill from the Acropolis, and will take around 15 minutes to explore. The main intact attraction is the entrance arch. You can actually see the bulk of it without entering by walking around all the way, though the ticket is only 10€ (there is a combined ticket available with other sites). Could use more signage with historical information.

  • 5/5 Lucas B. 1 year ago on Google
Awe-inspiring layout. It truly is incredible how the structures from a millenium ago can last in such a way. It really speaks to the technological prowess of the Greek and Roman people.

  • 3/5 Jeff S. 1 year ago on Google
We only visited this because we were walking by it on our way to Olympic Stadium and had already purchased a multi-site ticket that allowed us entry at no cost. It was OK and nice to see some ruins. But overall, it was below average compared to most of the sites you can see in Athens.

When you are in Rome, you go visit the Forum. Alots to see, not everything is 'finished' yet. With some imagination you can see the extremely rich walking around here. Very nice to view from a distance. You could also walk past here for free and from the inside, if you purchase an entrance ticket. You have a lot of beautiful views and buildings here!

  • 4/5 Nadja 10 months ago on Google
A lovely piece of Greek history. There was no queue to enter and it was not too busy inside. We used a city pass ticket to visit here. So did not need to pay on entry. The staff were friendly. However this venue we thought needed some more information boards. It lacked some historical explanations to the pieces of architecture, which was slightly disappointing.

  • 4/5 Sarani M. 1 year ago on Google
It is nice but I really wish it was preserved much better... I also wish there was a colorful 3d model of the site to give a better image of what it looked like in its era. So great to have braille there!👏👏👏👏👏

One of the best experiences I've ever had visiting something. It's a pretty spread out area, so make sure you have good walking shoes. Talk about history..... this place had it. It's like walking thru time. After you're done, there are great restaurants right outside the entrance.

  • 5/5 Grace T. 10 months ago on Google
This is an awesome place to visit, especially if you’ve already purchased the combination ticket!! You can walk right up to the ruins and really get a feel for how everything once looked. It’s in a great location, seeing as it is not too far from other major sites in Athens. I would definitely recommend coming at an earlier time of day, seeing as there’s not much shade and it can get very hot!

  • 4/5 Ivan F. 9 months ago on Google
What's left is beautiful but this one requires a lot of imagination. Not a lot that you can't already see from the streets / through the fence. If you have the multi site pass and are in the area, go. But I wouldn't pay the standalone price

  • 3/5 ahbarable 1 year ago on Google
Enter only if you bought the package ticket of the Archeological sites of Athens (which I recommend and you can buy it here), otherwise you can see most of it from the outside. There are more interesting sites nearby. The visit is 20 minutes max.

  • 5/5 Chris A. 1 year ago on Google
The significance of this place may sometimes be overlooked by the casual traveler to Greece, but for a history lover it's a must see! It's basically the birthplace of democracy. It's also home to the best preserved ancient temple in Greece.

  • 5/5 Zach H. 7 months ago on Google
A cool ancient marketplace with some ruins of fountains, columns, and a building with some groundbreaking technology of the time. Buy the 5 day 30 euro pass which will get you into a lot of the ruins around

  • 3/5 Malcolm Y. 7 months ago on Google
One of the land's historically significant sites, can be walked around briskly, but most of the ruins can be viewed from behind the fence too.

  • 4/5 Siobhan D. 8 months ago on Google
Went with an acropolis and other sites ticket. It’s pretty low key but some interesting ruins at the back. I wouldn’t pay separately for it as you can see it all from outside.
