Really nice area at the base of the Acropolis that’s full of action all day and night. Many stores and restaurants around to visit or just take a seat and enjoy the historic views.

Monastiraki is one of Athens liveliest neighborhoods - a mix of history where on one hand one will find Greek and Roman ruins, Ottoman Mosque, Orthodox Churches ..etc and on the other hand hundreds of bars, restaurants, clubs, souvenir shops,... The area is much more interesting and nicer at night. The main square is just beneath the spectacularly illuminated Acropolis. Here you will find bunch of restaurants and shops. For clubs and cafes cross the main street and get lost in the maze of alleys with terrific graffiti, murals and all kinds of clubs. NOTE: this is a highly visited area, so you might expect scams and pickpockets here. In order to avoid several travelers experience here, use your common sense as in any other city and you'll be fine.

One of the most vibrant places in Athens! If you're in the city, be sure to spend some time at Monastiraki Square to get a feel of the atmosphere of Greece - it's one of the places that contains that atmosphere the most. Listen to the musicians playing, buy some fruit and eat it while people rush around you. Talk to the vendors selling small souvenirs and try to refuse them. Eat at one of the tavernas around. All this just below the great Acropolis that looms above you. This is 100% Greece!

The Monastiraki area is the place to be! Within walking distance of most attractions, it’s an interesting place to stay. The square itself is vibrant and alive, but can also be quite dirty. Definitely a place to visit when it’s quiet in the morning hours.

Main square in the area - good spot for gathering, just outside of the Monastiraki train station. Plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Also having flea market next to the station. You can see the magnificent Acropolis from here. Can get very crowded, be careful of your belongings. Some areas are quite dirty and smelly.

I love Monastiraki even when it's crowded. From the Roman Forum, you can see the mountain where Acropolis is standing. It has a lot of coffee shops, taverna, estiatorio, and kebab, and souvlakia places to go to. There are lots of ruins to visit, as well. However, beware of pickpocketing because of the huge crowd in this square.

A disgrace of Greece. The place is dirty full of paint and garbage. The whole square is full of pigeon faeces cigarettes on the ground and small paper pieces. Lots of heroin addicts and beggars. Keep a mind on your things while there. I don't recommend it as an attraction of Athens.

In one of the liveliest areas of Athens at night. The smallest Byzantine church I’ve ever seen (free to visit, and well worth a look)stands on the edge of an open area surrounded by bars/restaurants/cafes and shops. During the day you can sit and linger over a coffee, but in the evening it’s a totally different animal. Hawkers pester to sell their toys, half the entire youth of Athens seem to congregate there. It’s busy, loud, but walk up through the throng and there is a lovely area with ruins and a row of restaurants that give you a fabulous view of the Acropolis virtually overhead.

Tourists here , please be careful , since my mobile was stolen here. When we finished asking the taxi price on Ermou road in front of Monastiraki Square, there were 2 Gypsy's kids (Roms) holding a bunch of flowers by each other and finding the targets, and then they targeted at us. They started bothering us, and ask us to buy their flowers.(We did't agree with that since the place has so many scams.) Later, they started to insert their flowers into my pocket where my mobile was, and the pocket was also zipped up at that time. We rejected them definitely and walked along with the Ermou road so that perhaps we will have the chance to get rid of them. I also told them "If you did this again I'll call the police!" They seems they wasn't afraid of that, and responded loudly and angrily. They tangled with us all the way(on Ermou road). Suddenly, I found out a restaurant so that I went across the road for asking for help, but the 2 Gypsies followed me ,and again tried to insert their flowers to my pocket and also said "sorry mama sorry mama". (what a DISGUSTING Gypsy phony in the world) After they do such things to me again for a while, they suddenly ran away. And that was exactly the time that my mobile was taken away. I think Europe should not accept so many refugees.(Actually it's the best to kick them out.) I know somebody may say it is related to human rights, but no regulations no freedom, or it just ruins the life quality of locals and tourists.. If they want to live here, make themselves qualified instead of steal or rub other's stuff. It made me in such a foul mood. And definitely I will not come here for traveling again, neither my friends and relatives, I'll tell them the incidents I had here.

Very lovely and lively place. There is a very friendly guy who sells very tasty “simits” (in Greek called Kolouri) for little price. He stands right at the entrance of the metro station. A good chance to taste traditional “koulouri”

Too crowded place. Nice historical buildings in this square. The entrance of the flea market is also here. make sure to bargain before you buy anything in the flea market. There is an old mosque converted to church in the center of the square. There are also a few churches.

Shops with Greek related gifts (souvenirs). Metro station pass under square, allowing access to all others station, including Athens airport.

The living centre of Athens! Full of souvenirs shops and fruit stands, street artists and colours. Just a bit further there's an archeological site and a stunning view of the acropolis. On the right, you have the flea market and in other small streets you will find many traditional restaurants. Just watch out for pick pockets and hold on to your belongings.

One of the most busiest area in Athens. With magnificent Acropolis in its background, there is lot to see and explore. Local market selling antiques, food products, jewellery and clothing. High street brands are located near the Square as well. Plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. Monastiraki Square is well connected with public transport. You can spend entire day walking and exploring around square.

Monastiraki square is the liveliest square in Athens and perhaps all over Greece. There’s always action happening there. Street performers like musicians and the like make the area more exciting to see. It’s a popular meeting place and centrally located with access to major transport like train to/from the airport as well as the Piraeus port.

The Square can be a very busy place during the day and night. Only time it is not teeming with people is probably between midnight and 9 am. I would describe it as the central crossing location for the historical sites associated with the Acropolis. Besides restaurants, shops, and hotels located there and nearby there is a underground Metro station with two entrances and exits and Taxi lines. It is Tourist Central!! with all the activities that come with it. Athens does a pretty good job of cleaning it every morning before things get crowded and busy. What's nice about the tourist shops in the area is that they are not "pushy" or irritating trying to get tourist into their store for the sell. They are pleasant and polite from my experience. We generally felt safe just people watching or passing through.

Everything runs off this square and there is a lot going on whether you want to do some shopping, have a drink or have something to eat. You can access the Acropolis from this square which is probably a 10 to 15 minute walk. It also has a metro station and taxis available nearby. It's well worth a visit.

One of the most busy squares in historical centre of Athens. A great variety of dining and tourist shopping. As the place is very busy, enter with care as there are many petty thieves that can snatch your phone or bag. Just be careful and cautious.

Beautiful square with a beautiful church and beautiful view on Acropolis. Nearby you have a lot of restaurants with beautiful Greece and Mediterranean food, a lot's of stores where you can buy souvenirs and other stuffs. But, you need to be very cautious, there is a lot of migrants who wants to try to stole your stuff, or to sell you a drugs.

Monastraki Square is the beat of Athens, in my opinion. Places to eat, relax, watch as the world goes by or simply explore. It has a lively scene with a boisterous flea market. It is imperative to explore the square when you visit Athens. The locals are friendly and helpful. You will be glad you came and sad when you have to leave as I was. I felt I had also left plenty unseen and undone.

One of the best places for tourists in Athens, the Monastiraki Square has a special charm because it seems wide, but still humming with people taking pictures or wandering through the narrow streets full of shops and bargains. The old church has a memorable shape, but it's difficult to renovate it in the old style, the buildings around it are nice, small and intimate. The variety of souvenirs, clothes, hats and colonials makes your head spin...or maybe there's too much sun. A street full of terraces gives you too many meal choices to make up your mind. Nice walk, nice shopping, nice eating :)

(Translated by Google) One of the meeting points of the Athenians. Its negatives are: 1. Roma children gathered to sell small items and flowers. 2. The lack of policing and the absence of even the municipal police. 3. The fact that due to the large number of people there are several thieves (bags, mobile wallets, etc.) 4. The counters with the sellers of seasonal fruits that are a disgrace for Athens because they have a stack of fruits which on the outside have beautiful and impressive fruits and inside (from where they take to put you) are of poor quality. But most people do not realize it until they open it to eat. I wonder why the Municipality continues to give them permission to be there. The worst picture for the tourism of the city. 5. The afflicted of the city that exist around the square. I understand that this is a big social problem but the center of Athens - which is also its showcase - must "clean up" at some point !!!!!

Monastiraki Square is the place to go to have really a great time. A lot of cafes, restaurants and stores around. You need to go with time, because mostly of the stores are unique. I explain, what you find in one store is different from the, maybe look the same, but always has something different. For took time to find a store who sells pins. Not all of them have. Like wood komboloi, I found only in one. Close to the Acropolis and Agora. It's a most go place.

The square is always buzzing with activity and music but be very careful of the scamsters roaming around here with some kind of crocheted wrist bands.

There is a square in the heart of Athens with lots of taverns and souvenirs . It located near the metro station and the Library of Hadrian . Here you can try the most tasty giros :)

Generally well upkeep in cleanliness but too many hagglers allowed to bother tourists while visiting main shopping district and restaurant. I felt threatened when surrounded by two women begging for money when I was just trying to get a train ticket to.the airport. They wouldn't let me move until I raised my voice.

Positives of this square include it being small, intimate, and laced with monuments, restaurants and shops. There is a metro station and it is in the heart of Plaka District. Negatives are as such: it is very crowded and loud, you get hassled everywhere by non-Europeans trying to tie wristbands around your arm and take your money. Beggars galore. This was also the one place in Athens where I actually caught a man with his hand in my pocket, so watch your wallet. It is also very dirty, but I guess, for some, it adds to the flavor. I'd say go but leave your valuables at the hotel and be careful with what you brought with you.

Well it's the central square in town. A mudway point you must go through anyway There are a lot of rooftop bars around, but you can't chech places till you get there. The small streets are better experience and there is no greenery or fountain there to make it special. Rather it's a bit dry.

Great place! Nice views from the top and just serenity is so calming. It looks like they have a nice small town. I 👀 skiing signs. We were coming from Meteora and i say this place is as nice, i would recommend to spend one day here. The little town seemed to be slightly nicer then by Meteora.

Nice place to visit in the evening, but crowded. The main square and surrounding streets are very crowded, but walk a little further and it gets quieter. Plenty of atmosphere due to the ancient ruins and also the street musicians. Lots of bars and restaurants to try.

A place to go to when you want to get the city vibe, when you are on a lookout for food or drinks or if you would like to take a stroll down the street of many shops or towards more historical places. Usually in the evening, there are some events by different communities happening here.

Typical metro station outlet site. Plenty of touristy shops, hotels and restaurants. Great access to the acropolis and other Athens sites. Continuous police presence but they hang around their car so watch your wallets, purses and bags. Since there are multiple ways in and out of this metro station it may take a few times to figure out which exit to take.

Great relaxing atmosphere with plenty to see and enjoy the sights and sounds of Athens. There are several side streets leading from the square to different directions offering food, to the flea market, bars, restaurants and many more.

An historical square in the heart of Athens. View of the Acropolis. Overcrowded in the evenings. A large metro station on site. Some of the taxis that are waiting there might overcharge you, be aware!

We loved exploring all theiugh Monistiraki Square, seeing the people eating, touring and having a fantastic day here. You must visit this area. It goes on and on, with so much great food and shopping in store.

  • 5/5 Daniel U. 11 months ago on Google
This is surrounded by the shopping district. Anything from antiques to high-end stores can be found here. Not the best restaurants available, but good enough for a decent Greek salad.

Busy yet really scenic key location in Athens. Here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Acropolis while eating fresh fruits and waiting for the yellow or red sightseeing Bus ( I fully recommend the yellow line - ask for Kostas). Plenty of restaurants, kiosks and next to Agora's Gate.

This is the heart of Athens in my opinion- the metro line is here - all the shopping and restaurants start here. This is a good meeting point to end or start a walking tour

Incredible vibe right in the heart of the city, where everything is at your fingertips..... shopping, bars, restaurants and more. Day or night, it's the place to be.

Nice square. Very busy. You get a good view of Acropolis from here. There are a lot of cute shops round this square. We found some unique souvenirs here. Overall a good place to visit to experience the hustle and bustle of Athens during mid day. See my other review of Attic on rooftop restaurant. You will get a good view of this square from there

Nice place with great history! Amazing views from the square to the Acropolis. However it tends to be really busy especially at night.

Santorini will always be Santorini but it gets overcrowded with tourists, of which I am one, and it has been over- commercialised by those wanting to make a better living for themselves. To see Santorini take a bus tour and see the island before wandering the narrow rocky paths and byways.

It's a nice square to go to if you are visiting Athens. It is very accessible by metro or with the 'Grey line hop on-hop off bus'. When you go there, you have a very nice view of Akropolis and sometimes you have some life music as well. There are also plenty of souvenir shops (and other types of shops around) so you will surely find something you like. The only downside I found is that you have lots of people trying to sell you stuff you didn't ask for, or even directly putting an wristband on your hand, telling you it's free and then later asking you to pay for it. And be aware of pickpocketing Overall, a very nice experience despite these last 2 things :D

Best place for staying in Athens. If you are looking for halal foods, there are plenty of restaurants here. U can get foods in cheap price. Moreover, night view of this place is so wonderful. Also u can get varieties of souvenirs here.

Wow! Borders on the ancient Athens Center. Hadrian's Library, Temple of Hephaestus, Parthenon, are just a few of the sights to see. Also the Monastiraki flea market, shopping precinct, are a great experience!

  • 4/5 Vanessa B. 5 months ago on Google
The square itself is quite small but there are many gift shops leading from different streets. It’s a great place to buy souvenirs, but check out each shop before purchasing something because you’ll most likely find the same item at a cheaper price. Be mindful of surroundings and certain vendors who try to give you “free gift” because they will end up asking you to give them money if you touch something. The food downtown is WAY overpriced and not that great. You’ll know if the food is good if there are locals actually eating the food. Try not to fall for restaurant owners who are tourist hunting because most likely the food is not worth your time or money. Otherwise, it’s a great spot to visit while in Athens.

Nice place with a lot of souvenirs. Very close to the metro station. A lot of people. There are so many different stores. You can see the Parthenon from here as well. Fun place to see and buy things.

A very busy place too many people but had us surrounded by a lot of nice restaurants the atmosphere at night is cool you will have a good experience. Is a most to stop, eat, shop and experience the place.

The tourist hub of Athens, always busy and good fun. Beware the restaurants are dearer ('cos of view) the gift shops a little tacky. For better value and a good choice of restaurants head up the road that goes around the Acropolis.

Monastiraki Square is an absolute must-visit in Athens. Steeped in history, this vibrant square offers a sensory explosion of sights, sounds, and tastes. The iconic view of the Acropolis in the backdrop makes this place a photographer's dream. The bustling flea market is a treasure trove of unique finds, from antiques to handmade crafts. You can spend hours exploring the narrow streets and haggling for that perfect souvenir. Don't forget to try some delicious Greek street food - gyros, souvlaki, and pastries are readily available, and they're all fantastic. In the evening, the atmosphere takes on a magical quality. The lit-up Parthenon in the distance is a sight to behold. The square's numerous bars and cafes come alive, making it a perfect spot for a night out. The historical landmarks around, such as the Tsisdarakis Mosque and the Pantanassa Monastery, add to the charm. Plus, the Monastiraki Metro station makes it easy to reach, making it a convenient starting point for exploring Athens. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a shopper, a foodie, or just seeking a taste of authentic Athenian life, Monastiraki Square is a destination that won't disappoint. It's a true gem of this city.

If you visit Athens, Monastiraki square is a must. From there you can walk to Plaka and forget the hectic rhythm of the modern city. You can enjoy ancient greek sites and get a view of the Acropolis. Stop for coffee, a drink or food in one amongst the plethora of cafés and restaurants. The earlier you start the day the better... Less people, less noise, more feelings. However, if you like crowded areas, start exploring later during the day.
