I stayed in this hotel 10 years ago and had good memories so wanted to stay again. Unfortunately, as everyone else has said, the rooms are really dated now and need renovation. I was put into a room with two single beds after booking a double. I paid extra for a view and a balcony and the room they suggested to move me into (if I wanted the bigger bed) had neither. I just wanted what I booked. Supposed to be a non-smoking room but badly smells of cigarette smoke. I guess it’s just in the carpets after so many years. No restaurant and instead you can buy frozen meals and a “breakfast box” which reminds me of something you would get from the dairy as a child. The phone emitted a strange high-pitched noise every few minutes so I had to unplug it. It’s very strange and a bit sad to see how the hotel is going down hill. They should really invest into making it a proper 4 star hotel again. The staff member I spoke to was friendly and the room has a nice view but I don’t think I would stay here again.

Close to Takapuna Beach area. I got a suite so it came with a washer and dryer. The gym was nice. I was not aware that someone was not at reception all night so if you are coming after 9 to check in you better email the hotel first !!

Large room with great views. Awesome location in the heart of Takapuna CBD. Staff seemed to be in short supply and the pool heating was not working. We were told this was a recent issue however, longer term guests advised us this had been a problem for several weeks!!

I stayed over the weekend of 14/7/23 to 16/7/23 for a conference. We arrived at 20.10 and upon entering the lobby from the street, the receptionist looked at us and put up a sign on the desk saying back in 5 minutes. Not a welcoming start! There was no hot water (boiler problem) on the first night and next morning and after that the temperature got to mildy tepid. Cold showers each morning!! Surprisingly, this '4 star hotel' has no dining facilties for guests (not mentioned upon booking). Apparently they are being refurbished, but there was no sign of this. I suspect it's a staff/Covid problem for which the hotel's solution is to 1) offer you a microwaved meal (which reception will bring up) - yes seriously and 2) suggest going along Byron Avenue to a cafe for breakfast/lunch or Takapuna for your evening meal. Unfortunately the cafe doesn't open until 8am - too late for me to be able to get breakfast before the start of the conference. It was cold on the night of the 14th July and we (and the staff member) were unable to get the heating in our room up to a comfortable level. This was solved by a portable heater being brought in!! (4 star service)! The temperature problem was not helped by the window (we were on the 5th level) seals being old and leaky. A constant draught of cold are was being forced into the room by the outside wind. we needed a thick/heavy extra blanket for the bed. I have to say that this Hotel does not deserve it' 4 star rating.

Lovely friendly staff but my room hadn't been vacuumed. I do appreciate businesses are struggling with staffing issues at present but this was very visual when I walked through the door. Bed was well made and bathroom seemed clean which was good and it's probably one of the quietest hotels I've stayed at.

No restaurant at the moment which is a shame. I love dining in. But great price great room and just a happy time. My happy place! Come for a visit and soon you'll see why I say that.

It’s a shame the bar is closed. That said had a decent stay here. Hotel staff were nice. We stayed in a few different rooms when we were here and they were fine. Great location.

We recently checked out of this hotel yesterday after staying there 4 nights and 5 days. We really loved the pool, it was really clean and the LED lights added that special touch, the gym was also really cool, we loved that there was a washer and a drier available so we weren’t stuck with dirty clothes for a week. We really liked those things but, our bed was broken, when we lay down our leg raise meaning something is broken at our heads, the bathroom is a bit old, the showers are really small and there is only half a door on the shower. The view was absolutely amazing tho and the parking is really convenient aswell. I enjoyed my stay overall but wish the things that I didn’t like were fixed so I could give it a five star.

Great location and a nice big rooms! It’s amazing to have a kitchen, fridge and freezer along with washing machine and a dryer in the room. Highly recommend, specially for families. We got a cot delivered for our baby for free. Our older son loved playing in the heated pool which was super clean and tidy! The best and most convenient hotel in Auckland in my opinion. Easy bus ride to the city center and back. I do hope they open up the restaurant again. Will be coming back!

Was okay. No restaurant available despite it being closed for 3 months and being told it was under going renovations. No renovations were actually taking place. The king bed is just 2 king singles together. Not fun when having sexy time!

The Spencer hotel is situated in a good location with beautiful views. The room was very clean and comfortable. We really enjoyed the restaurant food and has a great menu. Excellent food, great service and cool atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We would definitely return. Highly recommend this place to everyone.

The central location in Takapuna was wonderful, plus the apartment was quite spacious. However, the Internet was terrible, and we were disappointed in the substandard housekeeping and rather tired looking bathroom.

Firstly the staff are amazing very friendly and helpful, the location is superb and you’re right in Takapuna. The pool and spa are very nice as well. The rooms are dated, and tired it’s a shame as this used to be classed as one of if not the best hotel on the shore however that is now not the case. The bathrooms have paint flaking away, fans not working the beds feel uncomfortable and and old the TVs very small and just generally feels tired. For the price you pay which is still on the higher end of what’s out there it’s just not great value we didn’t think. We have a special place in our hearts for The Spencer having held our wedding reception there many years ago but time has not been kind and the lack of any real investment in the rooms is now showing. EDIT to reply to review - We had two rooms booked they were Room 410 & 402 we checked in yesterday and checked out this morning, also booked direct via the website so I assume this was hosted via the hotel and not a 3rd party.

The room is dated, the bathroom is tired. The restaurant is still under renovation, I saw another review from 3 months ago saying the same thing. The balcony door is so drafty you can literally feel the wind passing through it which is probably the worst part of it all.

Really nice stay. Extremely rare to find great accomodation at such a low price. I do hope they are able to reopen their restaurant. I can understand that the restaurant will be competing with some great eateries surrounding the hotel.

An amazing hotel with views across to the sky tower and Auckland CBD. Room service, pool, tennis court and gym.

The prices are very expensive for what u get. I've stayed in ultimate luxury hotels with the highest of quality in furnishings and staffing in Auckland. I think this property is taking advantage of its location but it feels like a business motel. Staff were unfriendly and just doing their job. Parking was incredibly overpriced. The only thing I was surprised at was they had Sky movies and sport and nice views.

Classifying itself as 4.5 stars, it definitely fell short. Room was quite average; very heavy cigarette smell coming through air vents so AC was off for two nights, even when off we could still smell cigarettes. Bed and bed base was thin and sunken in the middle while pillows are so soft there is no structure to it. TV remote wouldn't change channels while in bed. Concierge who checked us in was snotty and cold until the end when my partner made a little joke. Water pressure was great though so are the views and location. But that's about it. Really disappointing as there is huge potential for it to be amazing being right in the heart of Takapuna. 3 stars at best.

Very clean and tidy and comfortable with everything you need. Restaurant food and menu was good, nice pool and gym, perfect location for everything. If you want a nice Hotel where you can shop in central Takapuna as well as just pop over the bridge to Auckland that is not shabby by any means and has everything provided, is affordable and great all round then this is a good choice for personal and business stays. We got an excellent deal and service and the place is just perfect for us! Highly recommend this Hotel and we will likely be frequent customers.

great views from our room. it was nicely appointed and clean. I was quite impressed. until I hit the shower. the shower head leaked so pressure was bad. the water was tepid warm certainly not a hot shower. the towels were what I would call skinny, not light and fluffy as you would expect from 4.5 star. staff at check in were in training but did a good job. we ate in at the restaurant. I thought the mains were a bit pricey but the food was good as was the portion sizes. wait staff were pleasant and attentive. parking was ok although one of our party who had booked parking missed out for some reason. easy walking distance to the Bruce Mason centre and the concert we were going to. I would stay there again.

I booked this hotel a week ago and was looking forward to time away with a friend. I searched for the right hotel for our needs and thought we had found it. Prior to arrival I received call from reception telling me they would like to upgrade me which I declined as we wanted twin beds which I had booked. Still trying to make me think it was an upgrade (rather than overbooking) he says he can put in a roller bed. I declined this as we just wanted what we booked. On arrival we were told that they could only put us in a king room but would seperate into singles. Then tried to charge me $320 when my booking was $230. Offered a free drink for us both. All we wanted was what we booked after a long tiring day. We arent important enough for the manager to come and talk to us. No carparking and the staff were cold and unfriendly. I won’t be back and I will be advising as many people as I can to be very aware. Even if you book with them don’t expect to get what you booked. Stay clear! So disappointed.

The building is beautiful, as well as the rooms and restaurant. For a lovely stay in taka The Spencer is a great option. Where it is lacking is in the staff and amenities. Front desk staff member "Sava", lacks enthusiasm, willingness to provide a solution to a problem and has a stink attitude. Very poor service and would recommend his next line of work being a parking warden or tow truck driver. The Spencer needs a revamp - cutting unenthusiastic staff would be a great lift to the atmosphere. P.s the spa is 38 - 43 degrees faranheight.. not celsius. As the boiler is broken and will not be fixed / replaced for 6 - 12 weeks. If a warm spa was a necessity to your stay, I would look else where.

Location is very near, walking distance to many eateries, beach and shopping. Parking in hotel underground car park is $30 a day otherwise can park opposite at public parking which is free overnight. Rooms are standard an well maintained. Choose ocean view with balcony, it's worth it. There is no breakfast but a cafe around the corner.

Attended a 65th birthday party here. Great place for an intimate function. Food was okay but can probably be improved. Pork belly skin wasn't crunchy so a bit of a let down. Tofu was ok but maybe some additional flavours of sesame or ginger can lift up the dish.

Booked dinner for 6 for my nephews 21st birthday. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. A couple of times we had to try and get staffs attention for drink orders despite them standing right near us. 2 mains and 2 sides were forgotten on our order. By the time the food came out, 2 of our party had finished the their meals. We ordered 2 miso roast salmons, one was freezing cold in the middle and both looked undercooked. The restaurant itself is starting to look run down. No tablecloths on the tables, peeling paint and multiple lightbulbs out in chandeliers makes it look like a Cafe rather than a nice restaurant.

Very unfriendly front desk staff, and over priced rooms and parking. Heated lap pool was not heated and spa pool was freezing cold. Our friends were in another room, stunk of cigarettes, asked to move rooms but rudly told they were fully booked. They were not!

Held our business AGM function here for all our sponsors and stakeholders. Highly recommended as a venue. Everything was setup perfectly, very professional environment and the food was outstanding! Fantastic location too, with lots of parking and easy access to transport. We will be back again

What a view from my apartment room...right across the Tacapuna Bay and then for a few days, I had a room facing the Tacapuna Bridge and Auckland. Lovely place, though we were in the service apartment side, we loved it for its location and view.

Beautiful hotel and facilities. Unfortunately little effort gone into environmental sustainability. Despite signage for conserving electricity as a sustainable measure, all lights and TV were on when entering the room (confirmed by other guests that this seems to be the norm). All packaging including soaps, dishwashing liquid etc. was all packaged in single use non recyclable sachets. Disappointing to see but would be great to see this hotel look into more sustainable measures. Aside from this the room was lovely and hotel staff friendly and welcoming. Good facilities in the hotel as well as good location walking distance from shops and beach
