I had their gold ____ creole, it was delicious. I don't know what authentic Cajun is so can't say for that part but I can tell you that the food is delicious. Will be going back soon. Definitely a different indoor environment than other Austin places.

This review is for their poboys. We used to eat them at least 3 times a month but they have gone so far downhill lately. Sloppily made and lacking ingredients. Thought we’d give it another chance and This was the better half of my crawfish poboy. Chewy tough bread, dry with little to no Mayo, and maybe half the crawfish. Not Good. Great alligator bites though.

My husband and I had the shrimp po boy lunch special. I had the fries and he had the red beans and rice. The sandwiches were very good, although they could have had a few more shrimp on them. The beans and rice was tasty with just enough spice. The fries were pretty average. The beer selection was limited. Our total bill, including alcohol, was under $30. Overall, a great dining experience.

I ordered the alligator picante! It's got a lot of kick to it and just the right amount of heat as well. The gator does taste a little gamey but this is a very great Cajun joint hang out at

Such a staple of South Austin creole cuisine! My recent visit I had the catfish dinner with dirty rice and it was spot in delicious! I've never had a bad experience here and I wish I lived closer to frequent the Cafe more regularly like I once did. A great spot for a date/conversation as well.

TLDR: a solid place to scratch the cajun itch in Austin Came here for lunch on a Saturday. The restaurant was absolutely popping, and wait time for an inside table was ~45 minutes. we were able to be seated immediately outside, and there was a nice breeze that day, so we went with that. We started with the fried pickles, as well as a cup of gumbo for myself. The fried pickles were pretty solid. nothing super remarkable, but who doesn't love fried pickles. The gumbo was really solid, a bit watery, but still some of the best I've had in Austin. For my main I had a shrimp poboy. The base components were good, but the shrimp was overly fishy and didn't really come out well. overall, it was alright, but certainly nothing worth writing home about. Overall, really solid little place. 3.5/5

From the outside it’s easy to overlook in a nondescript shopping center but once you go inside you are transported to a Louisiana hangout. The food is nicely prepared and the staff is super friendly. PoBoy is big with tender shrimp. Gumbo and Étouffée are nicely seasoned and not pasty like I’ve had at other restaurants. I’m very excited to come back and try more of the menu!

We always enjoy our meal when we come to Evangeline's, the fried pickles were one of our favorites in our most recent visit, chip style and very thin and crispy they were awesome. The cocktail sauce here is one of my favorite things, I get it every time I visit. Definitely recommend for the food, the friendly and attentive staff, and music on the weekends.

One of the best Cajun places in Austin. We had 2 appetizers, one of which was frog legs and they blew us away.

We were seated at a tiny table where everything had to be constantly reshuffled to make it work, it was dinner time so that may be why service was a bit slow. Had the frog legs which were heavily breaded and lil shocked to bite into bone, not good at all. The seafood platter was way too expensive for the quality the oyster were perfect, catfish and shrimp can mess those up, the crab thing was mostly creamy bread stuffing pretty gross and their side of fries was small, it also came with a 1/4 cup of rice and beans those were good too. This is a long review but necessary. I will not be revisiting.

The atmosphere was awesome & the service was good. Our server may have been busier than usual so we weren’t too bothered having to ask for multiple things. The food tonight though was really disappointing. Based on a Google list of “best gumbo” in Austin, we decided to try this again after a mediocre lunch visit about a year ago. We started with the Shrimp Contraband appetizer which was good ( the Oyster Contraband was just ok) so we were hopeful .However, the chicken & sausage gumbo as well as the seafood gumbo had a burnt taste making it impossible to eat. Great spot to hang out and maybe have a drink but lunch & dinner are overpriced and overrated.

I had 0 issues with ordering to-go, and the actual atmosphere was eclectic and cool. But man oh man, was the food bland and mediocre. We got the fried alligator appetizer, gumbo, and etouffe. With the exception of the jalapeño Mayo, everything was super bland. The ettouffe tasted like watered down gravy and had extremely small scraps of crawfish. The gumbo, as my fiancé said, “tasted like fishy dishwater”. We try and eat at local places to help out places, but I would not come back.

Wow. Amazing food, great funky place, and very reasonable prices. The food tastes so good. The flavors and seasonings really mix together to create a taste bud treat. The waitstaff was very friendly and attentive. This may be one of my new favorite places to eat in Austin. Several vegetarian options. It's like a little slice of New Orleans in south Austin. As an aside, saw a great singer, Michele Solberg, who was great. Good times, great food.

The food was okay. The portions were horrible. For the amount of money that I spent on dinner just to get back to the hotel to see a bunch of rice. There was much to be desired on the flavor side. Gumbo was bland. Shrimp Creole was nothing but rice and what look to be tomato sauce with about 4 small shrimps. Highly disappointed. We had high hopes. We know where not to go when visiting Austin again.

Evangeline's has been a favorite dining place of ours for years. They may have changed ownership. It was the little things that took away from our recent visit. I always request a straw for my cold beverages. When I asked for a straw the waitress told me they only had a few and were saving them for children. At first I thought she was joking. I order the same dish almost every visit. It carries a $18 price and has a lot of liquid. Two thin slices of Baguette were always included with the dish. When I didn't receive the slices, I asked and was informed I could buy them for $1. My dish was good; however, the dish my husband ordered normally has a creamy base but was dry and had little flavor. They are doing great business. Because of the server's lack of hospitality, it also took away from the atmosphere overall.

Cool music, the food is OK, too salty and not spicy enough. The big problem is that the menu lists crawfish etouffe at $17.99, but the computer rings it up at $19.99. Could be an accident, but either way customers are being overcharged. You can see the temporary adjustment made to my receipt.

So I've been here a couple of times and it is really great. The only reason I give the food 4 stars is that everybody I mention it to seems to think the food is super fantastic. So it's like a movie that everybody hypes and then you watch it and it's not quite life changing like you thought it would be. That is how I feel about their food. It's really good, just not life changing good. Service is on point. Highly recommend.

This place is absolutely amazing! Definitely a hidden gem if you are not local to the area.

Amazing experience, the inside decor is probably what sets this place apart from the other big new Orleans style place I know. The prices were very fair and the food was spot on

I have been to this restaurant many times in my life, and the review I'm giving has nothing to do with the quality of the food, which is excellent, this is a review of the service. Took my family there to eat tonight, the entirety of our stay was an hour and a half. In the multiple times I inquired about our food, not only did our waitress seem dismissive of my concern, but never once apologized. Even when our food arrived, there was never even an apology for the wait. I've been to restaurants before where I've had to wait longer for my food, but I've always had somebody coming by to check on me, offer dinner rolls, something just to show that they were sorry about the wait. It'll be a while before I go back there.
