The old town is surrounded by a Roman wall. The next morning and at the end of our vacation we visited the cathedral. This is a Romanesque episcopal church and has three naves. Its construction began in 1120. After the destruction in the 100 Years' War in 1379, reconstruction did not begin until 1436. Above the west portal of the cathedral is a field of arches containing a pictorial representation of the Last Judgment.

Beautiful Building, just finished 4 years of renovation inside and out - make sure you take a look at the stone work above the steps at the main entrance .

There is a pleasant, calm atmosphere inside that encourages reflection and prayer. The large colored church windows are beautiful. The famous west portal is also extraordinary if you understand the meaning of the individual figures in the relief. Explanations can be found in the church.

The late Romanesque capital sculptures and reliefs of the Romanesque west portal are internationally important and fascinating in terms of art history. Many original capitals can be viewed in a separate room in the cathedral for an entrance fee - highly recommended for those interested in art history. Car parking spaces can be found on the late medieval city wall, and the old town can be reached within walking distance from there.

A beautiful church in the Cluny style, a rather imposing, soaring Romanesque style. In addition, there is a late Gothic extension that is well adapted to the original style.

A well restored Romanesque cathedral hiding behind later additions. Simple and clean lines. Capitals and main entrance carved by Gislebertus in the 1100s.

Lovely Cathefral. Would have liked a shop. I visited for family history as my decendant was an alter boy at the Cathedral and settled in Soho, London.

Very impressive. Wonderful room despite the Gothic Romanesque style. Court tympanum, capitals, etc. Important: Opposite the entrance there is the excellent presentation of the Autun story and a 3D film about the court tympanum. In multiple languages, all free.

From the exterior, the Cathedral is impressive with colourful tiled roofs, spires and a large semi-circular carving over the main entrance. Inside, the plane sandstone, carvings and paintings are beautiful in their simplicity.

Large cathedral on top of a hill and surrounded by a pleasant square. Gothic mixed with other styles, showing the centuries of history it hosts.

Stunning church - severe romanesque architecture without some of the excesses of later baroque additions that many cathedrals have 'suffered'. The timpanum over the west doors is worth the visit in itself.
