I
spent
seven
blissful
days
at
Hotel
Colbert
in
late
June
2023,
shortly
before
the
big
festival.
The
hotel
is
beautiful,
with
a
throwback
feel,
a
winding
staircase,
engaging
art,
and
a
peaceful
outdoor
courtyard
for
breakfast.
The
weather
was
such
that
I
was
able
to
sit
outside,
though
the
indoor
dining
area
is
also
lovely.
My
room
was
large
and
the
value
excellent.
But
most
rare
was
the
expertise
and
kindness
of
the
hotelier,
Patrice,
who
has
operated
the
Colbert
for
23
years.
I
relied
on
his
advice
to
visit
neighboring
towns,
including
Carpentras,
Orange,
Chateauneuf-du-Pape,
Arles
and
Isle
sur
la
Sorgue.
With
a
few
words
from
me
about
my
tastes,
he
perfectly
suggested
places
and
attractions.
He
also
recommended
stellar
restaurants
nearby
and
made
reservations
on
my
behalf.
His
supporting
staff
were
excellent.
The
location
couldn't
be
better
--
a
quiet
street
adjacent
to
a
park,
very
close
to
the
tourist
office,
post
office,
rail
and
bus
stations,
and
a
coin
laundry.
The
Colbert
is
an
easy
walk
to
the
principal
attractions
in
Avignon.
Oh,
and
if
you
like,
ask
Patrice
to
show
you
the
photo
of
him
with
Rick
Steves,
who
began
recommending
the
hotel
shortly
after
Patrice
rehabilitated
it
20-plus
years
ago.
And
make
sure
to
make
friends
with
his
polite
little
terrier,
Bonnie,
who
couldn't
be
more
cute.
