It's under restoration. The people were so helpful to explain the details in English. Here you can see the Golden Gate. The place is good for kids, just be careful viewpoint because there is a place without the fence. It's not wheelchair and stroller-friendly. And they asked us 100 TL for entrance.

(Translated by Google) Yedikule Fortress and Dungeons are on the coastal road stretching from Sarayburnu to Bakırköy. Between the years 413 and 439 II. Two pylons of the Golden Gate and two towers belonging to the land walls; After the conquest of Istanbul, Yedikule Fortress took its present appearance with the addition of a three-tower wall. The towers of the fortress, which gave the name of the neighborhood and the fortress to which it is located, entangled; South Pylon Tower, North Pylon Tower, Inscriptions Tower, Ball Tower, III. Ahmet Tower is the Treasury Tower and the Flag Tower. The Yedikule Fortress and Dungeons were used as a dungeon where many of the local and constructive prisoners were imprisoned, although it was used as a fortress, where the state treasury was kept and loot gathered for a long period, starting from the first years of the conquest. During the years when Hisar was used as a dungeon, many famous names of the period testified to his conviction. The most important of these is Young Osman, who was nicknamed Young Osman. Osman became. Young Osman was brought to Yedikule Dungeons after the throne was lowered by the janissaries and was brutally murdered here. Other important names imprisoned in Yedikule Dungeons other than Young Osman; Trabzon Greek Emperor David Kommenos and his sons, the last Abbasid Caliph IV. He is the Deputy and Crimean Khan Mehmed Giray. Yedikule Fortress and Dungeons have been the scene of many renovations until today. The most comprehensive restoration in recent years was carried out between 1958 and 1970 by the restoration team under the coordination of one of the first female Turkish architects Architect Cahide Tamer.

Yedikule Hisari or the Seven Towers Fortress in Istanbul. It was built in 1458 by Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, aka Mehmed the Conqueror (1432-1481), five years after the conquest of Constantinople. It can be a clear indication that Mehmed was not sure that other states were not going to counterattack the city of his dreams. Fortress was built in the southwest corner of ancient Theidosian Walls of Constantinople and the Golden Gate built in IV-V centuries A.D. by Roman Emperors Theodosius I (347-395) and Theodosius II (401-450) and was incorporated in the structure of the city defense. There were only four Golden Gates for the entire history of mankind. They are the Golden Gates of Jerusalem, Constantinople, Kiev, and Vladimir. Already in the XV century, this fortress became the prison because Istanbul was never threatened to suffer foreign military invasion till XIXcentury. That's why sometimes it is named Yedikule Zindanlari. Among most noticeable prisoners were Sultan Osman II (1604-1622), who was executed here by Janissaries, Emperor David Megas Komnenos of Trebizond (1408-1463), King Simon I of Kartli (Eastern Georgia) (1537-1611) and entire Russian Embassy with Ambassador Alexei Obrezkov (1718-1787) were imprisoned here in 1768 when Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774 started. Istanbul, 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇹🇷. May- November 2, 2023.

The fortress is still in renovation, but the few chambers that you can access are well preserved and authentic. You can also climb to the top and the view up there is stunning. In my opinion, it's better than the one you get to see from the Galata Tower. The entrance is rather inexpensive (100 TL), and since you get to see a fortress and a view that is better than the one from Galata (the entrance there is 350 TL), I think it well deserves the price. It's honestly way underrated. I think I only saw 2 other people the entire time I was visiting it.

(Translated by Google) The group of land walls and towers surrounding Istanbul from the southwest is called Yedikule dungeons among the people. It is possible to go to dungeons by bus or train from any part of Istanbul, today it is still used as a museum and all dungeons and towers cannot be visited due to insufficient lighting. The history of Yedikule dungeons dates back to old times. Centuries ago, there was a triumph of victory made by thedosius i in the place of yedikule, which is ms. It was turned into the entrance gate of the city in 412. A tower was added to the left and right by Thedosius ii and connected to the land walls; Emperors who returned from victory would pass through this gate that opened to the biggest street of the city (pole street). The arch and the front of the door were silent with gilding. Although there are not many traces of these gilding today, this door is known as the golden door. Torture section Byzantine artifacts that form the western facade of Yedikule, Altınkapı-walls, dungeons have been repaired in various ages and have been overhauled many times. Yedikule dungeons, which used to be the place where weapons and state treasures were stored, lost their importance by transferring them to the topkapi palace. One of the towers was used for prisoners and death row prisoners during the Byzantine times, and tools, cells and wells for torture are still available. Towers were used as prison for important prisoners, Tatar inns and ambassadors of the war states during the Ottoman period. The most interesting of these towers is the inscription tower on the left side of the museum entrance door. In the past, prisoners were imprisoned in the tower, and the water needs of the prisoners were supplied from the water well located in the middle of the tower. Yedikule zindanlarının tarihi oldukça eskiye dayanıyor.asırlar önce yedikule'nin bulunduğu yerde thedosius i 'in yaptırdığı zafer tak'ı vardı , bu tak m.s. 412'de şehrin giriş kapısı haline getirildi.

Europe, or if you ride in from the airport along the seashore, you will probably notice this fortress looming over the city's southern approaches. One of İstanbul’s major landmarks, it has a history as substantial as its massive structure – starting in the late 4th century, when Theodosius the Great built a triumphal arch here. When the next Theodosius built his massive land walls, he incorporated the arch into the structure.

An old fortress but going through restoration phase. Fortress of Seven Towers built by Mehmet II in 1458 Entrance fee is 100 TL but kids are free. If you are visiting it in these days, it is still open for visitors. They are restoring all major parts of the fort. You cannot go on stairs. We couldn’t see the Dungeons but still it was worth to view other parts. Ruins of old mosque Eyüp Kasim mosque are also there and that is also under restoration. The fort is quite big but you can visit the main part i believe.

Yedikule Hasari is a hidden gem in Istanbul, giving off major former Constantinople vibes. This ancient fortress, dating back to the Byzantine era and near where the famous Golden Gate was located, offers killer views of the city. Exploring its walls and towers feels like stepping back in time. A cool spot to soak in history and take amazing pics worth sharing with friends and family! Entrance is 100TL (about $3USD), they take credit card but it is recommended to bring cash just in case. Beware, the location is not in a touristy area whatsoever, which if you are a vagabond dragon like us, you would wholeheartedly embrace and look forward to it. Depending on where you start from, there are different bus routes that can take you nearby. It took us about 20 minutes from Sultanahmet, taking public transportation that cost only 15TL (under 50 cents USD) per person. In any case, ask either locals or staff at your favorite restaurant or hotel, for the most efficient way to get there. It is worth it!

The Yedikule Dungeons Museum charges an entry fee of 100 Lira for tourists. The museum is comprised of several towers, including one that visitors can ascend to enjoy a panoramic view of Istanbul. While the museum primarily features ruins, the Golden Gate is a standout attraction, offering a magnificent sight. This museum is recommendable for those who appreciate ancient architecture and a sense of nostalgia.

If you want to stand on a gate that emporers passed through, you must see this place. It has an amazing lstanbul view from top of its towers. There are still some parts of 15th century and 5th century remains, so it is an interesting feeling to step from 21st century to 15th and 5th centuries just taking a few steps. One of the hidden gems in Istanbul! It's a very cheap museum (100TL) and you are able to explore virtually the entire fortress. See the golden gate, walk around the area in front of it, enter the dungeons, climb to the top of the wall and get a panoramic view of the area and the Marmara. Simply fantastic and worth the time.

Great view for marmaray sea and cityscape of Istanbul old town. Reasonable ticket price(100TL). Some areas are under renovation now. But main tower still opens for going up.

Sadly just one part of the wall is accessible, so not at all the best views in town you would imagine to get. The fortress has many towers and the wall has very good views of the Marmara sea and the gateway from the Bosphorus, but it's closed to the public. You can just go up the wall facing outwards (in line with the rest of Theodosian wall) and the views aren't worth it (just cars and a station). Go there when the sun is right to make good photos of cargo ships and forget it if you think you'll see Hagia Sophia from there.

(Translated by Google) The Ministry of Culture and Tourism rented the fortress, which the public calls 'Yedikule Dungeons', to a private company for 30 years, provided that the original texture is not damaged. However, the company was quick to enter the structure, which dates back to the Byzantine period, with bulldozers. To make the runway, the company removed the original stones from the fortress floor and poured gravel instead, and the stones were thrown around randomly. Trees have also been cut down to expand the area. Neither the company, the ministry nor the board officials made a statement about the practices criticized by archaeologists and art historians. Hisar previously hosted concerts and theater performances for short periods. However, it was the first time that it was rented for such a long time. Radikal newspaper wrote how this incident took place as follows: (Original) Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı, halkın 'Yedikule Zindanları' dediği hisarı özgün dokuya zarar gelmemesi koşuluyla 30 yıllığına özel bir şirkete kiraladı.

It has a great history. If you are looking for where the Golden gate of Roman empire or Constantinople that is the place. But you will not find the golden gate any more. To get in you have to pay 100 TL (2022) You can go over the walls and see beautiful marmara sea and city walls of Constantinople.

Nice place to visit. Not really close, but great views from top of the Golden Gate towers. Big reconstruction works inside, and lots of banners are making inner view measy.

  • 4/5 Pug 4. 1 year ago on Google
Highlight is the the view from the "golden gate". The towers are empty and at the moment, there is no possibility to walk on the walls. An informative and very good guided tour in Turkish is available. An informative booklet in English is included. It is easily accessible by Marmaray and one could walk to Samatya afterwards to explore a non-touristic neighbourhood.

Amazing historical building with great views. That being said, the restoration done is horrible. There are no describtion of anything anywhere. You just wander around without knowing the historical details of the place. The inner area is filled with garbage and construction debris. Such a huge dissapointment in terms of the restoration done by the local municipality

The castle itself is nice to see. Part is closed due to renovation, but you can still go to the top to enjoy the view. No additional information is given inside the castle. This makes it hard to learn about the place. The lack of information and long distance away from other tourist sides make me hesitant to recommend. Note there is an entrance fee of 100TL.

The place is very good, quiet and clean. Restoration is continuing but you can visit and see some parts of the castle. It's free if you reserve early otherwise it's paid.
