One of the most underrated museums in Istanbul 🇹🇷⚓⛴️🌊. Easy to get to from the ferry port and bust stop, lots to see and do, and although they don't accept Muzekart, it's affordable (200TL at the time). I'd recommend taking at least half-a-day to see and experience all the exhibits. A must visit if you're in Istanbul.

Very nice museum if you are interested in ships, naval history and paraphernalia... Absolutely impressive the Sultan's historical Galley apparently from Mehmet II very well preserved. The rest of the galleys (mostly from XIX century) are very nice too. A well documented travel through Otoman history and the battles and navegación history. Very nice collection of old diving equipments too.

Outstanding museum to learn about Turkish and Ottoman history - even if you aren't interested in navies. It's a larger museum than you might think. Very well-curated with most signs in Turkish and English. For only 13tl, you should definitely visit this museum.

Highly recommend if you’re nearby, really into naval history, or need a clean bathroom (bc it’s that cheap just to enter)! There are old row boats and then models of every boat from the last 500+ years of Turkish/Ottoman history. My 11 year old son loved it! The place is not crowded (buy tix there), great AC (huge relief on a hot day!), and very clean bathrooms! For 25TL admission (currently $1.50) I’ve paid more for public bathrooms (Switzerland?) that are not this clean! And there’s a nice coffee shop inside with great desserts. If you’re doing Dolmabahce, consider walking over here afterwards. Worth the nice walk and then walk to Ortakoy or Nesantisi for dinner.

This museum would be very interesting for kids and their fathers. The exposition starts with old luxary long boats that are hundreds of years old, then as you go further you can see how the ships have been evolving. I particularly enjoyed a few rooms showing the history of the diving equipment. If you are not into this kind of museums you could always have coffee or a beer in the beautiful cafe on the first floor. The tickets were 100 lira per person in September of 2022.

It is a nice naval museum to visit, there is quite a bit to see and it is pretty cheap. Please note it is merely a naval museum though and not a maritime museum. The displayed name on Google Maps should actually be changed as well.

Bathrooms on first floor. Great cafe at the entrance / exit area. It has inside and outside seating, with lots of seats. Nice clean, nice smiley servers. Gift shop is currently closed. A good museum, showing the development of the navy from the beginnings of the Ottoman Empire, to the present day. The museum starts with showing busts of famous admirals, before showing ceremonial galleys used by the Ottoman sultans. The exhibition continues on various levels, with many detailed exhibits on the navy throughout the centuries, up until the present day. I found the section on the old diving equipment particularly interesting.

The Istanbul Naval Museum Or İstanbul Deniz Müzesi, was established in 1897 by the Ottoman Minister of the Navy (Bahriye Nazırı) Bozcaadalı Hasan Hüsnü Pasha. The museum contains an important collection of military artifacts about the Ottoman Navy. In the maritime field, it is Turkey's largest museum, with a great variety of collections. Around 20,000 pieces are present in its collection, including the late 16th or early 17th century Ottoman galley known as Tarihi Kadırga, built in the period between the reigns of Sultan Murad III (1574–1595) and Sultan Mehmed IV (1648–1687), as evidenced by AMS radiocarbon dating and dendrochronological research. It is the only surviving original galley in the world and has the world's oldest continuously maintained wooden hull. The basement consists of diverse items like figureheads, ornaments of naval ships, ship models, and pieces of the Byzantine chain that was used for blocking the entrance of the Golden Horn during the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1453. On the first and second floors, a large number of imperial and other caïques are exhibited. Many exhibition items underwent special restoration and conservation works due to the deformation of the raw materials caused by heat, light, humidity, atmospheric conditions, vandalism, and other factors.

I really enjoyed visiting this Museum. The naval history of this country is rich and they have a quite a lot of boats as examples out of the Ottoman Era. The details on these ships were amazing! You need at least 3 hours to visit the museum. Don't forget to visit their restaurant afterwards - their cheesecake is to die for!

Small(ish) museum with not so many exhibits. It's focus is on the Sultans' boats and there is nothing more modern, only some model ships. The side exhibits are better and enticing, especially the one about the divers. As the other guides said, an 1 hour museum. Great location though and friendly staff.

With the permission of Abdülhamit, it was established in a small building in Tersane-i Amire under the name of "Museum and Library Administration" in line with the orders of the Minister of the Navy, Hasan Hüsnü Pasha, from Bozcaada. The museum, which serves in different buildings at various times due to seasonal conditions, was moved to its current location in Beşiktaş (formerly used as a finance building) in 1961 and entered service under the name of "Naval Museum and Archive Directorate". Located right next to the Museum Main Exhibition Building, XX. A warehouse built at the turn of the century and used as an aircraft hangar, boat repair workshop and garage was allocated to the museum. What an amazing museum! Usually off the beaten path regarding places to visit in Istanbul but if you've been here and done the necessary this and that this place is a must visit. They put centuries old Ottoman era boats into the place itself. The explanations of Ottoman/Turkish maritime history is great. Lovely place and has a really cool cafe inside.

Very good museum if you are into history or military. Its a huge and very well designed (and award winning) building which houses many old boats, weapons, and other related history. Best part is, kids, students and disabled people can go for free. Adults are charged 100 TL. They also have an APP which can guide you WITH audio wherever you go! It can detect which room you are in and can read or display information! In the end, there is a gift shop and a cafe. Only flaw is, some places were very dark and not well lit.

Worth visiting if you have some spare time, as this museum is easily accessible from Beskitas port. The museum consists of two buildings, the first building you enter is rather boring as they display a dozen of wooden ships which all look the same and I assume no one can tell the difference unless you are a naval expert on 18th century ships. However, the second building has more variety of stuffs coupled with descriptions of history, so it was much enjoyable for me.

Really good exhibition including long boats, models of ships, guns, swords, paintings and even diving helmets. The price of admission was 200tl. My only issue is if you have a camera they will ask you to pay 120tl to use it. Taking photos on your phone is free. There are toilets, a café and they speak English. The staff are very welcoming. Easily found, massive sign on the building. Highly recommended going on a boat tour after (they depart from right next to it)

In 1897, Naval Museum was established under the name of “The Museum and Library Administration Office” in a small building in the Imperial Dockyard with Sultan Abdülhamit II’s permission and Minister of Navy Bozcaadalı Hasan Hüsnü Pasha’s orders. The museum served in various buildings regarding the conditions of that time. Finally, in 1961, the Museum was moved to a building in Beşiktaş (which was previously served as the Treasury) and began to serve here under the name of “The Naval Museum and Archive Directorate”. Storage near this building which was built in the 20th century and had been previously used as aircraft shed, repair workshop and garage was assigned for the Museum. The historical boats collection consisting of the galley and the imperial caiques was transferred to this building and this collection was opened to public in “The Gallery of Historical Caiques” in 1971. As the building which served as the Gallery of Historical Caiques was actually designed as a depot, the museum staff encountered some problems in preserving and displaying the collection. In order to overcome these obstacles, it was decided to build a new museum building in the available area. In this context, a national architectural design competition was organized on 14 August 2005. In 2008, the award-winning architectural design was chosen to be built as the new museum building. Finally, the construction of the new museum building consisting of the annex exhibition building, the gallery of historical caiques, the cultural center and the open exhibition area began according to the modern museology concept. First of all, a temporary depot was built in order to preserve the historical caiques during the construction period. In 2009, the caiques were transferred to this depot. When the renovation/restoration process of the Naval Museum completed in September 2013, the collection of historical caiques was transferred to this building. The new museum began to welcome its visitors on 4 October 2013.

Museum is open at 11.00 to 18.00 but last visitor entrance time is 17.30. Price is 25 TL for adults. Children and students can visit also, the museum is free for them. Historical naval museum is magnificent for visitors. You can see ships in the line of history. There are a lot of room for exhibition. One of them is the room of Battlecruiser Yavuz (SMS) Goeben. Every type of ship is exist. Battleships, Kalyons, kalyetes, mavnas, çektiris etc.

The museum has a wide variety of boats, naval and underwater equipment. The exhibition was quite impressive and I definitely recommend it. The ottoman and turkish boats are very well preserved. In my opinion, it's very underrated.

If you have any interest in musea while visiting Istanbul, be sure to visit this one. It shows you the history of what the sultan used to travel by water and also how the navy ships evolved.

Good to know, If you are planning a visit. First of all, it is very nice with a lot of history and displayed articles. BUT, to take photos with a SLR camera, even if it is not professional, you need to purchase an additional ticket, while you can take as much as you want photos with your mobile phone. We all know that now a days, mobile phones have good quality cameras as SLR cameras. I visited hundreds of museums in various countries, and this is the first time I met this restriction.
