Mitara was one of the most unique dining experiences I have ever had. You are welcomed into the home of the owner, accompanied by her cats and dogs. She makes you a meal and coffee as if you are a guest in her home, not a patron at a restaurant. Talking to her, learning about her story was as beautiful as the food - and the food - it was delicious as well! So was the coffee. A true, honest, Istanbul experience... If you are a small group it is worth it to stop by. And give the dogs a pet while you're there!

Before I went there, I wondered why the score was so high. But after I spent an afternoon there, now I know the reasons. The cafe made you easily feel home. And you forgot about time at home. But as she saw us from the inside, reading the exact sign that cafe is closed, she smiled and let us in. Day was cold so initially we expected to just get a quick coffee and not delay her any more, but she quickly found few dishes to offer and so we stayed for a delicious plate of rice and meatballs. Place is so very welcoming and charming with dogs sleeping on the floor and cats minding their own business. Music was also excellent. You can find many places where you can eat for cheaper in Istanbul, but I doubt that you will find many where your time will be spent in a better company. We were in a hurry, so no photo of food, but it was as well presented as it was tasty.

There was no menu so we asked the lady what she suggested for our brunch. We had a nice plate of meze, avocado on toast and tea and coffee. However we were very surprised by the price as we were charged 140 TL for a few meze. There are much better cafes and we felt it was very overpriced for what we ate.

I ordered the Artichoke, Beet (Salad), Green Beans, Eggplant and Olive Salad. All dishes were authentic in flavors and were very well harmonized. One can taste that the dishes were diligently prepared with heart and soul. It literally was the best food experience in Istanbul on this trip. Prices are pretty decent for the quality of of food that is served. Small dishes (starters) are 22 -33tl. My second visit I went earlier in the day sat inside the cafe and had only tea. The ambiance with hand picked art work from antics to contemporary authentic art and tools displayed makes one feel the magical environment of old / ancient İstanbul. The surrounding was just breath taking. I love Turkish tea btw. Even the tea had a marvelous flavor not like the conventional taste. Like nothing else is conventional at Mitara. I truly enjoyed being in Istanbul and Mitara is part of it! A must visit place when in Istanbul.
