Hanseatic merchants from northern Germany sailed to Bergen in the 13th century to exchange grain for cod from northern Norway. Their commercial activities made Bryggen and Bergen one of the most important commercial centers in northern Europe for centuries. Today, the Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene belong to the Bryggen World Heritage Site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. The museum illustrates how Hanseatic merchants lived, worked and left their mark on Bergen over 400 years. As you stroll through Bryggen and explore the beautiful Schøtstuene of today, you will get an idea of what Bergen was like during the Hanseatic era, which makes us feel like traveling back in time.

Currently (as of 14 July, 2022), only the Assembly Rooms are open, but they give you a great range of information and settings for the Hanseatic League's culture, purpose, and life. Take the tour! When we were there, there were two English language tours--one at 1pm and one at 4pm. Have a look around before or after the tour--there are several very funny additions to the explanation cards and displays.

Got there early and had a private tour. It was excellent and informative. Tours given in several languages. I absolutely recommend getting a tour as going at it on your own might be a bit sparse. The houses are kept mostly as is and are not filled with placards and info. Considering these are historical buildings, that's for the best in my opinion. It might be best suited for people with an interest in medieval or Hansa history. But should be at least a little interesting for most. Small children might find it boring.

Interesting although its a bit questionable how much is history vs more of a fanciful re-creation. They had planned some updates to the museum which would have been cool but seem to have fallen by the wayside over the last 4 years. Would probably be better if you got there for the Tour in English. When we went, it said it started at 3pm

Really interesting place to learn about the history of the Hanseatic League and it’s importance to the development of Bergen. The English guided tour was excellent and a pleasant way to spend some time in Bergen. The tour also includes a few stops on Bryggen which was a bonus. Suggest checking what time the English tour is on before visiting - the tour brought the place to life!

We didn't have a tour, so maybe missed out on one of the better aspects of this museum. Lots of information about how the museum is attempting to recreate the atmosphere (whilst asking themselves if it is at all possible). Two posters about the Hanseatic league, the rest was about the halls and some cabbages.

Nice staff, unfortunately very little information and exhibits for 150 NOK per person. It only took me about 15 minutes to do everything and I was very disappointed!

(Translated by Google) Tourist in my own town today with my son. The first time I visit Schjøttstuene amazingly enough. Will not be the last Was very nice, old and interesting. Same ticket as the Hanseatic Museum, so my son and I hit two birds with one stone. (Original) Turist i egen by i dag sammen med min sønn. Første gang jeg besøker Schjøttstuene utrolig nok. Blir ikke den siste Var veldig fint, gammelt og interessant. Samme billett som det hanseatiske museum, så jeg og min sønn slo to fluer i en smekk.

Fascinating place, especially if you're interested in the history of commerce and trade in the Renaissance and Reformation. The agreements and economic arrangements of the Hanseatic League made Bergen a major mercantile city.

Nice but small museum, got out of there in 30 minutes. Maybe you should go there with a guide (one is included to the ticket, but I had to wait 2 hours, so decided not to).

  • 5/5 Danielle S. 1 year ago on Google
Excellent display of reconstructed, semi-reconstructed, and in-tact assembly rooms of the Hanseatic League. I really enjoyed the ethos of this museum which includes the general public into ethical questions of restoration, conservation, and the creation of a shared history. It was refreshing to see this angle taken by a historical museum. The location was convenient, just around the front-facing Bryggen structures. It is a bit small, so maybe schedule in an hour of time to see all of the rooms. You can buy tickets either at the site or at the Bryggen gift shop near the main buildings.

A great UNESCO World Heritage Site to visit while you are in Norway. It has buildings and meeting rooms, kitchens, and other outbuildings, etc, that have been completely restored after being rebuilt in the early 18th century. A guided tour is available every day in English, and can be booked online. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance to the museum.
