(Translated by Google) The Iglesia de Santa Cruz or Old Cathedral stands on the site of a former Muslim mosque. It is the oldest temple in Cádiz, built at the request of Alfonso X the Wise. Cathedral since 1263, it is a fort on the seashore. It is well worth a visit: it houses iconic images of the Holy Week in Cádiz such as the Jesús de Medinaceli also called El Cautivo, la Soledad or the Santo Entierro. Essential visit. Visita imprescindible.

(Translated by Google) If you've only seen her online, you'll be amazed when you see her in person. Seen from the outside it is very beautiful and it is located in a very coquettish and romantic spot, so to speak. In addition, when we went there were few people, which gave it even more that air of a special place with a lot of history, which is noticeable simply by seeing it.

Surprising and interesting. The interior is obviously very old, converted from a mosque after the re conquest. The religious sculptures are amazing and to a non catholic they are really weird

One of the monuments of Reconquista in Cádiz, the “Old cathedral”, hidden behind the “New one”, mosque turned into a catholic church.

(Translated by Google) The historic church of Cadiz: to visit, after or before the new cathedral. It's a whole other dimension, atmosphere! As they say: two rooms, two atmospheres 😀 This one seems much more visited by believers, there is a somewhat family atmosphere!

(Translated by Google) This cathedral was built by order of King Alfonso X of Castile, El Sabio, at the time of Urban Pope IV, and was a cathedral until 1838, when the city's cathedral was moved to the New Cathedral. At the end of the 16th century it was destroyed in the looting of the English. For all this there are many architectural styles, although its Gothic imprint has not disappeared. It is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most beautiful temples in the city.

(Translated by Google) The Sé Velha de Cádiz, or Church of Santa Cruz, is a construction that dates from 1262-1263 and was rebuilt in the Mannerist and Baroque style in the 17th century. This cathedral was built by order of King Alfonso X of Castile, El Sabio, at the time of Pope Urban IV, although it has had intermittent periods of worship. It was considered a cathedral until 1838, when the city's cathedral was transferred to the New Cathedral. Since that date, 1838, it has been considered only a parish church. => First Christian construction (13th century) According to the excavations carried out in the basement of the Old Episcopal Palace, adjacent to the Santa Cruz temple, the historical chronology of the area was made, giving the fact that it could be located on the grounds of a primitive Paleo-Christian and Visigothic temple or of the Roman Theater of Gades (definitive studies carried out by Ramón Corzo not published since 2006). There is evidence that King Alfonso X of Castile, El Sabio, ordered the construction of a church around 1262-1263, over the remains of an Arab mosque, to be buried in. However, when he died, he was buried in Seville. Some renovations were carried out on the Gothic temple and on the coffered ceiling in the 15th and 16th centuries, until in 1596 it was burned by the Anglo-Dutch fleet commanded by Admiral Charles Howard and Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex. Cádiz until, on fire, it abandoned it, leaving this temple almost destroyed. Only the entrance arch and the ribbed vault of the baptismal chapel were saved. => Existing construction from the 17th century After the destruction of the previous temple, it had to be rebuilt in the 17th century, and it has been there ever since. In 1597 the reconstruction works were entrusted to the senior master of the bishopric Ginés Martín de Aranda. Finally, the building, designed by the military engineer Cristóbal de Rojas, was completed in 1602, consecrated on June 15, 1602, and opened for worship on May 29, 1603. => Interior In the 17th century building, it was built in Mannerist and Baroque style. It has a rectangular floor plan (for a room), with a false transept and three naves separated by Tuscan columns and semicircular arches and vaulted ceilings. The transept is covered by a hemispherical dome over pendants. => Outside The exterior of the roof is tiled in various colors. The exterior of the vaults is covered with multicolored tiles from the early 17th century. The bell tower is built in the 15th century, separated from the rest of the church, it is covered by a spire of polychrome tiles. Consisting of its first two floors by a nucleus of stairs, communicating on the third floor with the Casa da Contabilidade (headquarters of the cathedral museum), it has a rectangular plan ending in a pinnacle, also covered with tiles.

This was the 'Old Cathedral' of Cadiz before the new one was built and was a converted Mosque. A must visit.
