A really lovely place set back from the road in a little courtyard decorated with plants and traditional Shona sculptures. The atmosphere is very relaxed and communal, with meals cooked with other guests and chatting into the night if you wanted to. The host, Takunda, is really helpful and laid-back and I found him to be very trustworthy. The facilities felt slick and clean, but note the power (and so wifi) can go down sometimes (but I think this is more of a block-wide issue rather than the lodge itself). I found myself wanting to stay longer just to hang out more. Would highly recommend!

Ubuntu was the best hostel I stayed at during my time in Africa! The place is lovingly decorated and extremely well equipped, especially the kitchen. It feels like home and the owner Takunda welcomed me like a part of the family. It is great located in town and Takunda was very helpful with organizing trips to, or recommending places in, the nearby mountains. I ended up staying way longer than I had originally planned due to my great experience and hope I will make it back someday.

This IS the best backpacker place in town! When you walk in you be amazed by the decorations and design of this awesome place! Super cosy! The rooms, common areas and bathroom/shower are great as well! The owners and staff is soooo nice, friendly and also happy to help with everything you need and they also arrange for tours to the national parks around!

absolute gem of a hostel with a fantastic friendly owner/host. it's very well decorated, clean and has two kitchens that are better equipped than my own home. it's small with only 5 dorm beds and two private rooms. we'll located. Franco grill is down the street with great, cheap local grilled meals.

I was curious at first considering all the outstanding reviews on Google maps, but I can now say it is all true and well deserved! This place is an Oasis of comfort and peacefulness in Zimbabwe where you can meet other travellers and plan trips together to go to Nyanga or Chimanimani park for example. It has spotless clean rooms and bathrooms, hot (burning) showers, a wonderful full equipped outdoor kitchen to cook whatever you feel like cooking, and the small garden is just a treasure where you feel like home. The staff is adorable and Krista, the german lady managing the place, if full of good tips about Mutare, she can organise everything for you from the hostel. This lovely hostel is is the kind of place where you can easily get “stuck” for a while where you planned to stop for a night on the way to Mozambique. I didn’t see other places in Mutare but it’s extremely unlikely you would find a better place than Ubuntu here, neither in the entire Zimbabwe. Don’t miss it.

My partner and I really enjoyed our stay at Ubuntu. The staff are very friendly. Christa was lovely, she helped put us in contact with someone who could take us hiking and also made nice home cooked food with her own local ingredients.

I stayed there for a night only before crossing the border for Mozambique but when I arrived there it was totally full but the owner she tried calling other hostels also for me if I can get any place but all other were also full, but then she made a bed for in common area and I slept there and she charged me half price of the dorm room. She was so nice and she offered me food also. I think one of the best hostel I stayed.

We're so glad we found Ubuntu during our stay in Mutare. Meeting Christa and her Ubuntu family is exactly why we love to travel. Warm, welcoming, and it was a pleasure to talk with Christa over breakfast or dinner (she's a great cook). Great conversation and stories to tell and we have enormous admiration for what she does. The rooms are nice, showers are hot and the whole place is beautifully laid out. And Christa's lovely dog Sasha is an added bonus! If we're ever back in Mutare we're coming back without a doubt.

We had such a great experience at Ubuntu! We arrived late in the night without a reservation and the place was completely booked. The owner tried to help us find somewhere else but when she couldn't, she arranged a special room for us... The place has such a cozy feel and everyone is so friendly. The owner even offered us some of her homemade bread when she saw we were having soup! I definitely recommend staying here. Thank you so much!

Loveliest place ever to stay, just 30 minutes and you will feel like home. Very clean, comfy, cozy and pretty affordable. Although you are few steps to everything you need in town and the great location in the heart of the downtown but still very quiet place too where you can sleep like a baby. The beautiful vibes you get there from the first moment makes you fall in love with the place, the impressive design of the whole place, rooms, dorm, indoor area, outdoor area, beautiful garden, the nicest, kindest, politest most helpful workers in addition to great Christa the owner and her friend Michael, there kindness and generosity reflects on everybody in the hostel that really makes you feel immediately like home and you just feel comfortable in way like you have been there for long time although you have been there just for minutes. I assure you that you will meet the nicest people during your stay there and you will make new amazing friends in your hour. The best place I ever stayed in and out Zimbabwe.

This is a little gem nestled away in the heart of Mutare. Tatenda is an extraordinary artist whose sculptures have given it a magical quality. The people are lovely so do go and say hello 🤗

This was such an amazing little hostel!! It felt like I was staying in Takunda’s home, he made us feel so welcome and comfortable. He took a few of us on a day trip to Bvumba mountain, and was very generous with his time. Would definitely stay here again!!

This is a domitory or a backpackers accomodation. They are very accommodating and the place is modern and has african décor elements in it. Very unique and pleasant to stay at. They accomodated us even though we went as a couple, they made sure we got a space that fit us. Located right in the cbd of Mutare and it is very secure and clean. Would recommend to anyone any day.

Takunda is the best guide in town and can help to organize everything around Mutare and the beautiful region. He brings you to places that you would never find without his help. Ubuntu Backpackers is the perfect accomodation to start your adventure. Great place in the city center but still in a quiet area. Rooms, garden and common area are made with a lot of love for details. Very clean and affordable. Highly recommended.

Thank you Tankunda and Christa for everything! We truly felt like home staying in Ubuntu. And thank you for all the help we got from you. ❤️ I was originally planning to stay in Ubuntu for few days but ended up spending almost three weeks due to incredible hospitality they provided. The place itself is gorgeously decorated with good taste, has everything you might need during your stay (the kitchen is equipped like nowhere else!) and the rooms are cozy and comfortable. Dorm $15, private (for two) $30 and en-suite $40. Well worth the price! They provide you with some home cooked meals (if ordered) and also the possibility to cook by yourself. If Christa is around ask for the tomato soup when you wanna treat yourself with great flavors. 😊 Takunda is an excellent tour guide and we made some really good trips to the surrounding mountains. Can highly recommend! Easily the best backpacker’s I’ve stayed in whole Zimbabwe! Kupedza masports!

I feel very lucky to have found this place. It has everything a traveller needs. For stay there is both a dorm and private rooms(with and without private bathroom). When it comes to cooking for yourself there are two kitchens to choose from. One inside and one outside. Now of you want to explore the region Takunda is the guide for that. His priority is that you are satisfied and he will not only show you around but also advise you on next things to visit. As he advised me to visit the Great Zimbabwe instead of taking the same way back, for what I'm highly grateful. Also if you need a guide or place to stay outside of Mutare, Takunda might be able to help you with that as well, since he knows a lot of people that provide such service. Thanks Takunda you're a great guide and good person.

I intended to stay 3 nights and ended up staying 11. It's just a wonderful place. Rooms are nice and have all you need. Toilets and showers are spotless and the chill out area is really cosy. Takunda can organise you trips to sunset spots in town, Nyanga, Vumba and much more. Christa cook's amazing meals for a fair price or you can use the fully equipped kitchen (german standard ie oven, blender, good pans pots,... ) Takunda, Christa and all the other stuff are super nice and you will feel like home. One of the best accommodation in my one year africa trip so far.
