Tea House on Burke

Restaurant

👍👍 I'd only been here once before, back in 2016, and thought to try it again. I wish I'd done so earlier, because it was soooo incredibly good and delicious. Honestly, the food is great. The food takes a little bit of time to come out (even during non peak times), but the actual service is very good... People often mention service, great, good, delicious, restaurant, time, years,

I'd only been here once before, back in 2016, and thought to try it again. I wish I'd done so earlier, because it was soooo incredibly good and delicious. Honestly, the food is great. The food takes a little bit of time to come out (even during non peak times), but the actual service is very good and they're attentive and the meals all came out at the same time, which is almost unheard of in many Chinese restaurants (that I've been to). They even give you delicious sugar cookies at the end of the meal. They could definitely stand to freshen up and modernise the decor and repaint the dirty and old shabby looking walls, but overall that's really about the only complaint. Everything we ate, we loved and I'll definitely be coming back again.

Best traditional Cantonese style food. Same dishes I had 30 years ago.

This is not a place for traditional Chinese food. In one word Expensive, with that price I expect they will treat/control the freezer smell (hardy microbes and pungent chemicals) being transferred to the food. It's not all bad, I see many tables BYO their favourite wines, I guess this is a place for gathering not for food.

What a lovely restaurant. The dishes were delicious & the service is masterful. Very experienced & friendly waiting staff at your service. The attention to detail is very much noticeable and greatly appreciated. Highly recommended. December 2020: You can't go wrong at Tea House on Burke. Cantonese cuisine at it's best. March 2021: Back here again. Service is great. Dishes are delicious. Highly recommended.

Fantastic food, friendly service, well spaced tables, very good all round. Hadn't been here for a few years but it is as good as ever. The calamari is so tender and the beef very succulent. It's all great.

Attended in a group for a now annual event. Still the best roast duck I've eaten all year. And the person who ordered the pork with mandarin sauce said it was the best pork he'd had this year. We used to love the city restaurant, so we tried this one. The service is not quite the same discrete excellence, but is still good. The wine list is great. And the food is top notch.

Great dinner at Teahouse. Always enjoy our dinners there and front of house Dai Lin (not sure of spelling!) a welcoming face. Great chilli prawns and crispy skin chicken…love their beancurd and vegetables too. Attentive service always.

Used to love this place now just shocked with the service. Booked but got a call and got told there’s no table 5mins before. We were at the door so they gave us 1 hour to dine. The entire time from order to serving, there was minimal service not even a smile. Then the shocker came when we got told off on our way out for a few specks of rice on the floor from our 1 year old toddler, I doubled back for a quick look and it was less than 5 grains of rice. If you don’t welcome kids - make it known so people with young children avoid coming. Extremely disappointing considering we’ve always enjoyed this place previously.

$65 each for 4 pensioners to have a banquet meal!! Arrived at 12pm on a Friday- finally served at 2.30pm. Tiny portions, extremely disappointing

I come here quite regularly and have always been impressed with the high quality of food served here. Portion size is generous and a variety of chinese/cantonese delicacies to experience. Often a welcoming experience from the lady at the front counter. Would definitely recommend!

Once great, now very tired. Yet still very expensive. For example, $30 for a plate of beige, limp stir fried vegetables. Eye fillet was tough (!) and came in a 'hot and spicy' sauce that had no heat - it's what would have passed for spicy in the 80s. Some good things: Pork in mandarin sauce was tasty. Service was attentive. But at $400 for 5 people (only one person had alcohol), there are so many better options. Won't return.

Probably, the worst Chinese restaurant we have been. We booked a table of 5 we were met with grumpy old staff who seemed annoyed that we were there. They didn't have some items on the menu only told when we we ordering. The food was just layers of oil it was all terrible. The service was cold, rude and impersonal. We spent $75 each for bad quality food. I let them know my thoughts but was met with a blank look and no outcome. They only are busy as they have a over 70's bunch of customers who are not the biggest critics of food quality. I got a feeling its the beginning of the end for this place.

We ordered takeaway online on Mother’s Day, as soon as we placed the order, we received a phone call from a lady and informed us the pick up time will be delayed for 30min. We really appreciate her call so that we don’t have to wait at the restaurant to pick up the food. This small action shows the restaurant takes every customer seriously. The food is hot and delicious when we picked up, the lady at the counter kept apologizing for the delay. We can fully understand it’s Mother’s Day. Thumps up for the service and responsible staff at Tea House on Burke!

I haven't been to the tea house for some time. In earlier times, I went quite often and I have never had a problem about the food or service. I noticed this time that the service was particularly good despite the fact that the restaurant was full.

I’ve been coming to THOB for over 15 years. First with friends for lunch when we worked locally in real estate, to now after living interstate and overseas for 10 plus years, it was a place we loved to go to. After being back in Melbourne for two years, I have to say we initially loved eating here but our last two in house dining experiences weren’t great. Both times, our immediate family plus aunts and uncles, grandma and friends felt the change. We felt pressured and rushed to order (a mid week siting at 6pm with kids) so not busy, severs that couldn’t understand what we were saying, trying to clear the table before we had fully finished and overall, not friendly servers. Their normally great food was hit and miss. We won’t return and feel that the staff couldn’t care less. Nor did they care to ask or give us a smile.

Booked a table for 7.15, and turned up at 7.20 only to be told the table had been accidentally given to another party. So this became our problem. Pretty ordinary service and poor response. So off we wamdered.

I went in with my friends as I had asked one of them what his recommendations were for Chinese cuisine around the area. I walked in and was pleasantly surprised by the decor and general air of the place. Before coming, I had checked their online menu and had a general idea of the pricing involved. Unfortunately, when I sat down with my friends, I found out not only that the pots of tea were not only priced per person but also on refill, which is certainly not the norm for most Yum Cha or similar dine-in restaurants of this sort, but also that there was a minimum charge per person. Certainly, 30 dollars per person was not a large amount, but it was more than we had walked in thinking we would be paying. Furthering that, everything on the menu was about 20% more expensive than had been written online. I presume this is because they have not yet updated their online menu, which seems a bit lazy considering that they had made such a large % of difference in their pricing. Lemon chicken, most specifically, was 30 dollars for about one person's worth of food, and listed as 24 dollars on the online menu. Finally, the receipt came and I was surprised to see that they had not only had they managed to mistakenly add alcohol which we had not ordered, but also charged multiple times for tea after we had simply not requested another. After informing them of the issues and having them rectify them, I paid and left -- I will not be back again.
