I came here to dine alone as I was recommended through a friend and I am very disappointed with my whole dine in experience. Food did not taste good at all, quite bland. Firstly I waited 45 minutes for my meal, this is quite long in my opinion for a main meal and vegetables. Secondly the table next to me ordered after me, yet their meals came first (there were 2 patrons dining yet their food came before mine?) In fact one of the patrons ordered the SAME dish as me.... Third issue - the lamb dish as I took my first bites was warm temperature, not hot or very warm.. I've eaten at a lot of restaurants and have not been served a "semi warm" dish in as long as I can remember.. Another issue, the menu stated feta cheese, I could not see any feta cheese on this Slow Cooked Lamb dish. I I wasn't even going to make an issue of it but the person asked me while I was paying how everything was, so yes I told this worker everything. The worker did not seem apologetic at all, no discount was offered, would not recommend this place to anyone. Maybe a one time bad occasion, but I've never seen 3-4 bad things to note about one dine in experience..

Visited on a Thursday night, had a wait before were seated. Don't mind the wait, somehow feels ok, that food will be fresh and worth it. Ordered a large mix platter, large chips, hummus and a bread. Chicken was good but lamb just okay. Could have been better seasoned. Hummus was nice, pita was OK. Fries seemed to be from two separate batches, like half fresh and half re fried. Got to sit in a nook, so all in all not very pleased. Portions are good, two people eating couldn't finish it all. Staff were amazing..

I am so absolutely thrilled to come to Stalactites for dinner tonight! I have not been there for many years, and have very positive memories of childhood family outings to this very same place. The food was absolutely delicious! The service was spectacular! If you want an authentic greek meal, in a wonderful environment, look no further!

I found this from two websites reviews. It wasn’t as what I expected from the review. Food taste was just ok. Was told by the waitress that their Giros is the most popular food. I ordered the mixed giros. Service was quite abrupt. I understand they’re busy, I think they could do better. (Not sure if this is the same case as other guests; or maybe because I’m solo diner.) Value for money? Not at all, not when you’re paying $40 for a meal. I think it would be more valuable for takeaways. Note: surcharges for Sunday 10% Credit card 1.5% Debit card 0.5%

Are both here for Dine in and Take Out.. Excellent one of our favourites in Melbourne. Staff always friendly and good customer service. Highly recommend for others to try. Question can be big to getting you don’t have a booking but they are extremely good at moving quickly. 5 stars thanks :)

Very heavy and filling food. We were ready for a hearty meal and over ordered. The souvlaki’s are highly recommended and truly satisfying. The mousaaka was the highlight for us. It was done well and layered with eggplant and mince. It was enough for 2 adults with moderate appetite. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming but it gets busy at peak hours. Even during off peak times, the restaurant was nearly full. This indicates a high degree of customer satisfaction.

Went with the wife. She is very specific gluten allergies. Initially got there 750pm on Thursday night...too busy..came back about 915pm and could get a table. Porterhouse steak unfortunately was very average. Chips, salad and pita was good. Wife was happy with her food. Also had creamed rice for dessert and that was okay. Service was generally friendly but had to wave down the staff multiple times but always friendly and helpful service. Would go again just not for the steak.

One of the juiciest gyros you can fine in Melbourne, it's so soft and tasty!! The dips are also yummy to my taste, and pita bread was flesh, everything was satisfying.♡ Price is very good for the quality of food you're getting. One of my favourite to keep coming back, except for waiting in line and finding parking in the city haha but we really enjoyed our meal ♡

Food was absolutely delicious couldn't fault a single thing we ate. The line outside the door is justified as the food is worth the wait. The mixed dips are a must!! Waitresses could be a bit more friendly and outgoing but that's only minor. Overall 5 stars and highly recommend.

Super awesome 👌🙂 Had the large Mixed platter spit roast with Mixed dips, Pita bread, Feta&olives. Scrumptious food. Lively place. And of course..... the ceiling was marvelously done up with stalactites moulded lighting 👌👌 Staff are friendly. Service is reasonably quick. But the wait is long. Overall a fantastic experience ⭐ A restaurant you absolutely must visit in Melbourne

I chose this restaurant for my birthday. The food is nice and good. The chicken platter is super delicious. And I ordered calamari which is fresh. Thanks for serving a great experience on my special day

Last Wednesday evening, we visited this place and found a few people already in a queue outside the restaurant. Despite a 30-minute wait for a table, the bustling atmosphere indicated its popularity. The staff, who efficiently looked after us, were not only friendly but also offered valuable advice on their dishes. All the dips were delicious, with the eggplant dip standing out as the best. The slow-cooked lamb with baby pasta, though the name escapes me, was exceptional - the lamb was incredibly soft, tender, and bursting with flavor, making it one of the best lamb dishes I've ever had. The homemade Gemista was also a standout, a flavorful and generously portioned meal. Overall, we were impressed by the food quality and the warm, homely welcome from the efficient staff. A solid five stars from me.

Such a delicious hearty meal. We got the mixed gyros with chicken and lamb. The meat was really tender and flavourful. I liked the lamb more (had more spices). Really enjoyed the first few bites as the bread was crispy and fresh. The bread gets a bit soggy after a few minutes and everything starts falling out. Calamari was good but wished they had this as an entree instead of main as it was too much for 2 people. The spanakopita was a let down as it tasted a bit bland and stale. I went at 12pm on Monday and we made it before lunch rush so there were plenty of tables. Service was fast and efficient. Would come back to get the mixed gyros platter instead!

This place is unreal and often has lines out the door and round the corner. For good reason too. Great interior fit out. Excellent food at reasonable prices. Although it took a good 20ish minutes for our food to get to us, it was worth the wait. The meats were incredibly tender and well marinated. It’s always easier getting in during lunchtime then it is for dinner.

The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff create a welcoming environment. The menu is filled with delicious Greek dishes that are prepared with utmost care and attention to detail. The flavors are authentic and the portion sizes are generous. Whether you're craving souvlaki, moussaka, or baklava, Stalactites will not disappoint. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in delectable Greek cuisine in the heart of Melbourne.

Great Greek restaurant in Melbourne! We were lucky as it was rainy day and it was not crowded during our dining time! We really enjoyed Pita bread! When we leave at 12:15, it was already fully seated. Should go earlier time! Thanks!

I ate during non-dining hours, so the serving time is quick. I strongly recommend the mixed giro and the chips because they are really delicious, but save money on beverages. The waiters were friendly and served the food fast, and it’s definitely a must go restaurant here in Melbourne.

I had the pleasure of dining at Stalactites restaurant in Melbourne, and it was an experience worth the hype. As soon as we arrived, it was clear why there's always a long queue. Fortunately, we had the foresight to book a table in advance. The food was exceptional, and the flavors were absolutely delightful. From the moment we tried the first bite, it was evident why everyone raves about this place. The service was attentive and the ambiance added to the overall charm. If you plan to visit, do yourself a favor and book a table in advance. It's definitely a must-visit spot for anyone looking for a taste of Melbourne's culinary scene.

Way to over priced for what you get had to pay extra for pita with our open mixed souvlaki. Dips were average and again had to pay for pita bread... $120 later for 2 ppl and we were still hungry.

The decline of Stalactites. Greed has finally reached them. $18 for a lamb yeeros, just over half the meat one use to get and tzatziki extra when it once was included. Sad!!!!

We used to love this place, the atmosphere and of course the food were amazing. A couple of nights ago, although in isolation, my husband and I went for a takeaway. The first thing we noticed was that the physical distance wasn’t respected and not reinforced while waiting. Then the food was absolutely uneatable, with the meat uncooked, and no seasoning, nothing tasted like the old great souvlaki we remembered. We both had to throw away the food without finishing it and were left with sore tummies. I really hope they will pick up their game and the recent experience was just an accident.

Lovely looking place and extraordinarily popular with many different nationalities particularly young families except surprisingly, Greeks (Sat night & none to be seen, not even on the floor or in the kitchen) Somewhat concerning that social distancing was virtually non existent despite what’s advertised online and tables were sticky even after being ‘wiped down’. Service & staff were great. Food - sadly, eaten better. Price simply didn’t reflect quality and serving size of food.

A true Melbourne institution. I hadn't been here for a few years but it was still just as good. Was there for an early dinner with work colleagues on a Thursday evening. We had booked, which was a good move as the place was packed. Nice vibe, great service, tasty authentic food. Several vegetarian and gluten free options available. Even the cheapest bottle of red was pleasant.

Nice food. Very noisy due to busyness. Service was good but just too slow. I heard same negative reviews from a few of my friends which was "meat was very dry" So we were a little nervous if the meat from our platter is also dry All of them were very delicious. No wonder line is always long.( I was always curious how good it will be) Nothing further to say. Just good but busy

The positives: they open late at night and they do gluten free (GF) souvlaki and gf hot chips. On the flip side, $18 for a takeaway lamb souvlaki is over priced.

Really good place for a family meal. I highly recommend the meat platter for 1,2-4 to even 12!!! Really good value and leaves you full! I suggest a sweat red wine 🍷 to go with it. And I would also recommend a “galaktoboureko” for dessert.

Had dinner here last night. The place is open till 2am and was a 2 min walk from our hotel so made it super convenient! We had the mixed grill and vegetarian appetiser platter. The lamb and chicken were halal but the restaurant isn’t halal certified. The servers were incredibly helpful in letting us know about what we can and cannot eat based on halal dietary restrictions. Would’ve never guessed the pita bread would be problematic because it’s heated on the same grill as non-halal meat. But the gluten free option was good to eat and great with the dips!

Firstly this is the most overrated place ever, 2 stars only because the chicken was soft enough to eat at the least but was not lean like it said in the menu, there was a lot of fat on it. Gyros meat was mostly fat and rock hard, meatball patty whatever it is was burnt and hard, even the cutlet was hard how do you ruin that? I'm on keto at the moment so only reason I thought I would try this place on one day a week with my partner, thanks for the one olive on the salad too. Never will be back again

This was my second time coming to this restaurant (years apart), and it was just as good as the first time I was here! This time I had the chicken giro souvlaki. Absolutely delicious. There’s usually a queue to get into this place, but for a good reason (and worth the wait!).

The Stalactites which is in Melbourne 'Little Greece' along Lonsdale Street is one of the best Greek restaurant in Melbourne. It is such a popular restaurant that there is always a queue whenever we come. The food is fantastic here. The bread and dips, grilled chicken and sausages are very delicious.

On a busy weekend this place is packed, if that’s not your thing maybe come on a week day. Either way, the food in tasty! It’s not the best Greek in Melbourne but it certainly is a classic. We had the gyro lamb plate and the assorted of dips and bread, it was way to much for two people but in classic Greek style I enjoyed over indulging. The beer was a bit pricy but it’s popular so that’s what you get. All in all, it’s good. If you haven’t been here it’s a must.

This used to be my usual place for Greek food when living in CBD for 3 years and also when I moved to the west I drive down for takeaways. Unfortunately, the food isn't as tasty as it used to be. I feel a lack of care and quality in the making in the past one year when they were mostly open for takeaways and not dine-in. Got a takeaway yesterday 17 Sep 2021 and both chicken and lamb from the spit were bad. One of the mix dips also tasted funny. The lamb was cut into large chunks with little to no flavour. Very disappointed especially when you pay a premium and expect the food to be good. It's been always a hit or miss over a year now.

I thought the vegetariam souvlaki was done excellently but unfortunately it was so large I couldn't finish it! What a problem to have :) The atmosphere is very lively and Jan was super helpful. Really appreciated her help and she makes a mean iced coffee! The place is also gluten-free certified so if you have any celiac friends, they should feel more comfortable. Overall, quite a nice place and will come again.

Amazing food. The upstairs is slightly better seating. We had about a 20 minutes wait to get the seating and another 20 minutes for the food to arrive. However, it was worth the wait. The daily selection of lamb was beautiful. So tender and flavourful. The desserts are lovely too. His Royal Highness Sir Widdle Waddle thoroughly enjoyed the kalamari platter (in photo).

Look, pretty cool spot and decent food. Certainly wasn't blown away but it was a solid experience with reasonable prices and good customer service. Guess it's worth visiting even just for its reputation and renown, but don't go with sky-high expections. It's good without being amazing.

Loved the ambience and experience here at Stalactites. The decor and design of the restaurant was a great conversation starter. The waiter (bald guy) was extremely friendly and attentive, kept checking in on all the guests. The food is great. Ordered the Appertizer Platter, which came with an assortment of meats, dips and flat bread; and the Mixed Meat Platter. The chicken was the real star of the show for me, very tender and tasty. The lamb is a little gamey but pair it w the dips and you'll be fine. The meats from the appetizer platter were a little dry (beef and chicken skewer).

Worth trying this Melbourne institution if for nothing more than sitting and people watching - the food is great though. Had the mixed platter with chips, Greek salad and dips. The dips were the standout - all flavourful, fresh and the pita freshly warmed with olive oil. Pita is charged per disc of bread. Servings are pretty generous and the chips delicious.

  • 5/5 Brandon 1 year ago on Google
The pita bread was very nice with the dips. The yogurt dip was the best I've had. Very nice. The restaurant is very interesting as well, like you're in a cave. It is in the corner across from QV, so parking is not too bad. There is plenty to do in this area as well. We came around 2 pm and the restaurant was not too packed. We had a group of 6, and we were able to get a seat right away.

There seems to be a line outside every night. They only take reservations for groups of 6+, all others are walk-ins. The food and wine was delicious. I ordered the mixed gyro platter. The only downside was that I wanted another dish, and the waitress said it would take 30 minutes to prepare and she can't do that because they were busy.. i think it was because i was occupying a table they could have fit two people at. Other than that the staff was friendly.

It’s shame they don’t take bookings for party under 4 , so we had to wait for nearly 30 min in line for getting a table . But was worth it , fresh food with great options . Saganaki was amazing , also had the most delicious fresh pita bread , and amazing dips . Definitely worth the hype , with great taste . Ambience is good , obviously decor is based on stalactites so definitely worth the eat .

First time back since covid Still an institution in Melbourne. Still same menu, all the Greek meals we expect. We had Souvlaki x 2, 1 x chicken 1 x mixed, plus bowl of chips Too much big chunks of onion, and the sauce was all at bottom of souvlaki, so lacked flavour until got to bottom part. There were no chips on these Souvlaki, so not sure if there usually are chips on a souvlaki. Very busy, we were in before line-up started for lunch.

I visit this place each time I come to Melbourne. The quality and quantity of food will never disappoint you. The staff we super friendly and, they are know the dishes served in here. I ordered different dips to go with pitta bread, fritters and chicken souvlaki. They all were fabulous and flavourful. I robbed them of one star as the chicken was over burnt and it spiked the taste. I will still visit the restaurant again when I visit Melbourne.

Cozy Greek restaurant in CBD. We noticed the crowd so we decided to give a try for lunch. - mixed gyro 💙 - calamari with a very delicious sauce💙 The portion was huge for asian girls but the taste was sooo good no wonder this restaurant is loved by both the locals and tourists. The service was attentive. We will definitely be back!

Staff super attentive during busy lunch hours had a corporate farewell lunch and the food definitely hit the spot told my expat co worker how Greek food is just 80% meat thst will make you skip lunch 😂😂 she felt that culture shock right after the platter of foods that came to our table. Very enjoyable atmosphere that I'll cherish for a long time. Thanks.

Big serves, very cramped and very pricey $$. Ordered dips, and you'd think you get breads for the dip...nope extra $3 a piece...then because its a sunday 10% surcharge + another surcharge to pay with card... Wont be rushing back anytime soon...

The flavor was not over savory and absolutely amazing! The serving speed was so fast even there were so many people lining up. Definitely worth a try.😊

Kalamari was amazing. When we arrived, we waited in line outside for about 20 minutes but it was totally worth it. The food was amazing and the size of portions was huge. As I have coeliac, the gluten free was coeliac friendly. Highly recommend.

My First Ever Souvlaki I went here for dinner, right after going to a grocery. And fortunately, I didn't experience any queuing. But the restaurant really got busier as the night got darker. I had souvlaki which seems popular based on the reviews. It was okay. I liked the white sauce which I always look forward to when having this kind of meal. I would like to add fries and drinks but these were only offered via take out orders. Overall, my experience was okay. And I think that I should have had take out instead.

The Greek salad was very good with festa cheese on the side as requested. The Souvlaki chicken sandwich not too bad, needs some hot sauce would be better. Service staff friendly & very helpful. Best to use cash to avoid surcharge for credit cards which is pretty standard practice in Victoria state. Note that debit card has a much lower surcharge that credit card; 0.8% instead of 1.5%. Weekend a surcharge of 10% applies. Many restaurants adds surcharge during Sundays & Public Holidays as staffing cost more during non-work days. August 9th, 2023 a Wednesday.

Go with the correct expectation. This is an old school Greek Grill that’s been open since 1978. It’s simple delicious food, the best are the meat skewers rather than the shaved meats. If you love grilled meat, simple salad and nice French fries you will not be disappointed, it’s not trying to be a reminder of that “one place you remember in Santorini” It’s Australian Greek Grill that does tasty simple grilled meals with salad and chips. *Always get the tzatziki it’s delicious and elevates the grilled meat. **Also it’s often super busy and loud which is fine, just be aware it’s not a quiet restaurant. The staff are efficient and your meals come out promptly, even the grilled meats they said 20 min and we got it within 15 which was great.

It’s my first time here. I think it would be more helpful if the menu has some pictures on it, since the ingredients were all similar, but still lots of choices. We asked people who seat next to us about what were they having, and they said the similar confuse that they wasn’t sure what to order when they just arrived as well. The lamb and the chicken were nice cooked, the price was a bit high for what we were having. I would like to try desserts and something differently next time.

Just all-round brilliant. Good thing we were early as soon after we were seated, a queue formed up outside. Super fast service with great tasting food. A large menu to choose from. Reasonable prices. Would definitely go again when in Melbourne.

Went for dinner at 5pm Thursday. Came from Brisbane for my second visit. Was lucky to get table as place was packed. Ordered mixed grill for $43 a bit expensive I thought and meal was great however a couple things. Lamb cutlet wasn't that tasty and Greek salad had carrot which was unusual. Chips needed more seasoning. Food came out rather quickly. Service was good. Had galaktoboureko for dessert and the piece was massive and could not finish it. Overall 9/10

Good food at fair prices. There is always a line to get in as they do not accept reservations. Place is tight as the owners try to pack in as many tables as possible. Portions are very generous and food was served pretty quickly, considering how packed the restaurant was. Recommended to try the 'sharing platter' (pictured)

The environment and location of the restaurant is good. The service is not impressed which they couldn’t recommend the food. Salad was too plain and the price is not reasonable. Otherwise lamb is good.

Went on lunch with the team, it was and tastefully designed Greek Restaurant, serving all kind of food, with Halal, Vegan and Vegetarian options, their chicken and lamb are certified halal as per their website, when I talk to them over the phone, they told that he have separate hot plates for Halal and non Halal stuff, except Pita bread which is on the same grill so avoid pita is advisable. I ordered lamb skewers and it’s done to the perfection, so juicy and tender. Loved it.

Some of the best greek food in Melbourne. Definitely on the pricier side of you're not just coming in for a souvlaki, but well worth the experience. There's always a line out the door here on weekends and it's understandable why. The meat platter was fantastic, and all the sides were well made and the group had no complaints.
