The
Wilhelm
Marx
House
is
an
office
and
commercial
building
in
the
Düsseldorf
city
center.
It
is
located
on
the Heinrich-Heine-Allee,
the
former
Alleestrasse
or
the
Hindenburgwall,
and
was
built
on
the
Alleeplatz,
the
southern
end
of
the
avenue
in
front
of
Grabenstrasse,
from
1922.[1]
When
it
was
completed
in
1924,
the
building
was
57
meters
high
and
had
twelve
floors
above
ground,
along
with
the
Industriehaus
Düsseldorf,
one
of
the
first
high-rise
buildings
in
Düsseldorf
and
one
of
the
earliest
in
Germany.
It
has
been
a
listed
building
since
December
3,
1984.
Until
the
completion
of
the
Hansa
Tower
in
Cologne
in
1925,
which
towers
four
floors
higher
than
the
Düsseldorf
office
building,
the
Wilhelm
Marx
House
was,
according
to
the
contemporary
press,
“the
tallest
reinforced
concrete
structure
in
Europe”.
The
former
mayor
of
Düsseldorf,
Wilhelm
Marx
(not
to
be
confused
with
the
Reich
Chancellor
of
the
same
name),
served
as
the
name's
sponsor
and
laid
the
foundation
for
the
modernization
of
the
city
at
the
beginning
of
the
20th
century.
The
building
opened
the
year
of
his
death.
