Amazing coffee. Very knowledgeable staff. I loved the interiors. Very unique seating area with lots of characters. Plants, coffee bags, amphitheater seating, good music. Although i could hv enjoyed it better without the shopvac noise, but hey that's what you get when u get to see the work in progress. Must try if you love a good espresso.

I have resisted reviewing Subtext for fear I will have to share their magic with the rest of the world. Alas, I have succumbed to Juan and I will now review my fav TO coffee spot. To the point, the coffee here is top notch, third wave deliciousness. I’ve been coming here since covid times and it has been my sanctuary and guaranteed great daily coffee experience. I have sat quietly enjoying my coffee and doing my thing, but also watching the staff put in a phenomenal amount of attention to roasting and brewing fabulous coffee. You can sense the passion being put into the work. They know their stuff and apply their knowledge unsparingly. Special note should be given to Juan who not only makes a beautiful coffee, but also dispenses knowledge, wit and charm to his customers every day. He’s a big part of the positive Subtext vibe. It should be noted that the only bad Google review of Subtext has to do with an early closing and noting to do with the coffee. My only complaint about Subtext is that raisins (the devil’s fruit) sometimes make it into their otherwise excellent baked goods. Nobody perfect. But subtext is close.

This hidden gem in the Junction (Toronto) is a roastery slash space for coffee enthusiasts and nomads. This beautiful spot also boasts some great baristas with so much bean knowledge--ask them anything! Always a great time to chat. I have been here a few times and this time, actually stayed for a few hours to get some work done. Located in the industrial part of the Junction the space presents itself industrial but filled with warmths. When you walk in, you will see immediately a long coffee bar with various coffee machines for your pour overs, cappuchinos, espresso etc. At the far back, giant machines (roasting things perhaps), workspace for the techs (I think) and a beautiful graffiti art on the back wall. The main seating area comprises of high bar stools, a few desks area with sockets and roman theatre style steps with some tables that you can work from (also with sockets) or just chat away. There is a section in the shop that is a retain space with all the beans you can buy to go and various coffee related pieces. Commute wise, it is not the easiest but it is steps away from St. Clair/Keele. Definitely worth checking out--their coffee is so so so good! Drivers, street side parking available :D

Always an absolutely fantastic time when I make a stop here. Love getting two side by side coffees to taste. It''s obvious they incredibly care about what they do and are more than happy to take the time to explain the process and signature notes of all their varietals. The vibes emanating from this shop always put me in a better mood from when I leave then from when I entered, and you can't ask much more than that. It's rather incredible when someone remembers you when you only go every 3 weeks too. Bravo Team Subtext.

Glad I stopped in here on my day off, though I wish they had weekend hours! Great coffee, and a really cool space, adding to what's already a street packed with good stuff. Would highly recommend!

Got me hooked on the pour over coffee. Beautiful coffee shop and amazing coffee. They roast their own batches. Hidden gem. Also quiet and good for reading a book or wfh.

I came in on a weekday around noon to get my afternoon hit of caffeine. I had read the glowing reviews before coming and I was not disappointed. The barista, Juan was very knowledgeable and made a coffee recommendation to match my taste: blonde, buttery coffee that goes well with milk. The latte he made was gorgeous and tasted like heaven. My friend got a hot chocolate, which Juan also styled with frothy milk. The temperature of both drinks was perfect. I live nearby so I look forward to making Subtext a regular part of my week.

Amazing coffee, lovely shop. Barista was very knowledgable and great to chat with, especially if you’re obsessed with coffee. Freshly roasted beans every week. Highly recommend visiting if you’re in town! And if not, order their beans, you won’t be disappointed!

Coffee tasted different from other famous brand. Cost is in the medium to high end. I still think it is worth to try.

The coffee here is absolutely delicious and the barista there was so nice and friendly and obviously knows his coffee. They do their own roasting and hold coffee classes. This is definitely a place for people who like good coffee! I can’t wait to come back again!

Best damn coffee around. Period. It's a completely different experience from other coffee houses and they've clearly thought through every step of the process.

My friend and I were recommended this spot from a different local coffee shop in the area. It ended up being really close to where we were staying so we walked in the next morning. They have 6 pour overs from different farm competitions to choose from and I tried Diego’s copa de oro washed pink bourbon and was absolutely blown away! They have a steeping process to brewing pour over coffee and I couldn’t believe how clean, light and juicy it tasted! Everything I look for in a coffee roaster and shop 🔥

I don't really have words for how good this coffee was... I'm a coffee lover/addict/snob and brews from subtext felt the first time I was drinking coffee as intended which was an amazing and kind of disturbing feeling to know I had been living a lie thinking I knew good coffee.... Their coffee has beautifully balanced flavors. It's a perfect brew. (We tried 5 different kinds and they were all perfect).

Went there on an afternoon, I got told the espresso machine was off initially. After I ordered pour over, then two staffs told me the space was closed for a private event and not open for business. Why not just announce the private event and closure of business at the first point? Maybe just don’t care?

This is my holy grail coffee location. Sincerely, genuinely, from the staff to the multiple beans and espresso, pour overs, the space, the swag…everything is literally top shelf. I’m humbled by the coffee knowledge each staff graciously and without ego, shares making the whole experience that much more heightened. This is a special place. Come support local. Come support those who support family owned coffee farms. Come have your mind blown.

Good coffee BUT it’s not open! It’s a little out of the way so if you were planning to stop by for a latte it would be best to save the time because it’s actually closed :(

They have affordable rotating pourovers and even give you the coffee card with it. Plenty of plugs and seating area to work.
