Absolutely fantastic visit. Most other customers were regulars, and I can understand why. We had calamari in garlic and olive oil for starters, and seafood casserole and scabbard fish with banana for the main. If we knew how big the mains were, we would have probably skipped the starters altogether, although the calamari were extremely tasty. Also, their house white is really good. All in all, really happy that we chose that restaurant. Most of the photos there don't do this place justice. It feels very welcoming. Highly recommended.

Had a look at the menu and decided to venture in as it has great reviews and was a Michelin star. We ordered the entree with garlic bread and tomatoes with Madeira cheese. This was delicious and good. We then ordered the tuna Madeira style and then the chicken with mushroom sauce. They did inform me that the tuna is aged in wine and garlic for 25 days and fried, not grilled, but thought I’d proceed with it anyways. Sadly the tuna wasn’t that great and the sauce was a very strange fruity gravy. Luckily I had some vegetables on the side and got some of the chicken and mushrooms in pepper sauce which was nice. Sadly as I came home I got sick and evidently it was the tuna and the vegetables that didn’t sit well with me. Lesson learned. Service however and atmosphere was great. My food not so much..

First time of asking we asked for a table of 4, and no wonder why it was busy. A wonderful Michelin star restaurant in which you will enjoy whether you order sea food or meat. Mussels in wine sauce, garlic bread and tuna belly was my course and food of goods. Others ordered soup and meat, and they didn't even let go of one bite how nice it was for them. Definitely recommend if you can get in. Staff professional honest with opinion and lovely surrounding.

Absolutely fantastic restaurant, we were lucky enough to be squeezed in last minute and had the most amazing view from the terrace. Food was outstanding, meat cooked perfectly and the fish of the day was also fantastic. The servers were so attentive. Beware that Madeiran dishes tend to be very generous in size, the dishes also came with plenty of sides (The meat skewer came with hot chips and a salad whereas the fish came with steamed veggies and I think most if not all tables got a serving of fried maize, sweet potatoes and potatoes) so in hindsight ordering the garlic bread as well was a bit overkill but delicious nonetheless!

For an extraordinary taste of the dishes, this is definitely the place ! We were extremely amazed by the tenderness of grilled tuna belly dish, which was recommended by the waiter. Thank you! Every dish we have tried, had something particularly special.

We went for the dinner and the restaurant was quite busy but still got the table. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Food is very various. Seafood meals are quite great, also ordered tuna steak madeirian style- very tough and chewy. We were waiting for the meals for a very long time and got very bored of it because other tables that were served much faster so had no patience for desserts. But still good job.

Seafood is super fresh, squid, shrimp and mussels. We ordered the limpets (had this for the first time, quite fishy, but it's just how it tastes) stuffed artichoke heads, recommend that, garlic bread is delicious. For main course, it's good, except the pasta is a bit soggy, and can be a bit more flavorful, that's why I couldn't give it à 5 star.

This is a restaurant that is not to be missed while in Funchal! The service and the food were top notch. If you can make a reservation to sit on the upstairs patio. It has wonderful views! All the food we had there was so delicious eat the lamb chops!

Top restaurant in Funchal. Third time on Madeira and everytime we have visited Casal da Penha at least twice. In the evening the owner welcomes the guests himself and guides them to the tables. The staff and the food are both great. I recommend the steak on the hot stone (not in the pictures however), but other specialties were also excellent. Reactions to complaints (if there are any, I only had 1 in all the time) are excellent, which is actually the best indicator for the quality of a restaurant. Try the almond cassata, but don't blame me for gaining weight afterwards. A main dish can range up to 25€ for the steaks, starters can be up to 15€ and the desserts up to 10. You can easily spend 110€ for two persons, but it is worth every cent of it. Be advised that I recommend a reservation for the evening hours.

We ate here 3 times during our 9-day stay. And after the 9 days we wished we ate here 9 times instead haha. Food is amazing, atmosphere is fabulous and the owner Maikel and his staff (specifically Rosário) are absolute gems. They made us feel so at home. They even arranged for a birthday dessert surprise for one of our friends. The entire restaurant, guests and staff were all singing! Highly recommend the seafood soup, seafood cream, limpets, octopus in spanish sauce, sautéed mushrooms, garlic bread, tuna belly, paella, espetada and the desserts were also super yummy! We tried the almond cassata and honey cake. Can’t wait to come back to madeira and dine here again!

Absolutely 💯 top-notch restaurant. The food is beyond expectations. The octopus is the best I have. Limpets are very tasty and not so chewy as other places I had. The house wine is perfect. Definitely recommend and will be back.

Casal Da Penha is a small and cute restaurant near the port of Funchal. We got a recommendation for this restaurant in our hotel and decided to go there. Make sure to call them a few days before planning to go there in order to get a reservation! We really enjoyed the tasty food (and wine) there! They also have an outstanding friendly service. If you are visiting Madeira you need to visit this Restaurant! 11/10

Great experience from start to finish! We had a seat at the edge of the terrace with a great view of the city and water. The food and service was as great as all the other reviews said. I would definitely recommend making a reservation here if you are ever in Madeira!

In my opinion the restaurant the food could have been better. I had a bad stomach after eating the fish of the day which was sea bream and my friend had a mixed seafood which was alright. The food didn’t seem very fresh and a bit expensive. However big portions and the service was great

One of our favourites in Funchal. We went once without booking and then came back with a booking for a table on the terrasse by the edge for the view. Food is perfect. We enjoyed the Paella the first time and Fish the second time. The tiramisù is also worth it!

A must if you're in Funchal. Great, authentic food. Consistently good (have visited a few times now). Highly recommend the octopus main and the traditional espetada. Well done to the team, it's always super busy and you guys are always so welcoming!

Best food we had on the island, great view, nice staff, huge portions. We went there twice, if we had more time on the island we would go even more. We are still dreaming about their traditional Madeiran bread with garlic.

When visiting Funchal, there weren’t reservations available when we checked online. We decided to arrive for 5:30pm and ask if they had availability, even though the sign said reservations only. Lucky for us - they were able to sit two people inside. The restaurant started to get busy by 7pm. We ordered the beef carpaccio - which was great. They recommended the garlic bread, and we were not disappointed - definitely a highlight. We ordered the paella for two, and it was easily enough for 3 people and we brought leftovers home. They dish out the paella to you so as to perfectly plate it. The service was great, and personable. The wine list is extensive, and very reasonable price points. The menu was very extensive and there are so many other dishes we wanted to try.

We came on a Thursday at lunch time hoping to get a table since bookings were full 1 week in advance. We arrived at 12:30 when it opened and got a table with no issues - they put a few tables aside for walk ins. I had the seafood spaghetti and it didn't disappoint!! Best seafood pasta I've ever had. It was cooked to perfection and the sauce was delicious. The waitress was lovely and spoke English. Worth the trip!

5 out of 5 on all fronts. Highly recommend the grilled octopus with onions and olive oil. The octopus was cooked to perfection! Our waitress and host were wonderful and funny. Definitely try to get there early to get a spot on the terrace!

Best restaurant in town. The waiter is so friendly and organized a table for us even though we didn‘t have a reservation. We were here 3 times and the food was always excellent. Thank you so much for the experience!

The staff was so nice and polite, always smiling and attentive. The food was absolutely perfect! We ordered the seafood paella for two and it was very delicious. It is quite a large portion so bare that in mind. We also ordered their house rosè - really good. If we've had found this place earlier in our vacation we would've definitely visit it more than once!

At Restaurante Casal da Penha in Funchal, Cristiano Ronaldo's hometown, the food and drinks were simply delicious. This restaurant recently earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and it lived up to the hype. The flavors of the dishes were terrific, and the service was entertaining! The paella at this restaurant was a work of art that transports you to the Mediterranean with vibrant colors and bursting with flavors and textures. The steak was served with a rich and savory sauce that complemented the meat's natural richness. In summary, whether it was perfectly grilled prawns or a scrumptious seafood stew, each dish was brimming with the natural flavors of the ocean and thoughtfully prepared making this establishment a haven for food lovers.

Great service, didn’t realise how busy the terrace would be but it was lovely. The seafood of the day was sublime, along with the piri chicken which was also really tasty. The gentleman running the place really cared for his customers. We also had two desserts, chocolate sublime and passion fruit mousse - both equally delicious. We would definitely recommend coming here for a tasty authentic meal!

Hidden gem for lunch spot! They have various options for food and also the wine! The staff is very friendly and funny. The restaurant is very decorative and localize. Not that touristy and the price is reasonable for the quality foods.

  • 5/5 Margaret M. 9 months ago on Google
This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend and it did not disappoint. It probably is best to book as it gets very busy and definitely so if you want to eat up on the terrace. Portions are on the large side and both starter and main were delicious, no room for dessert unfortunately. Staff were incredibly attentive and we had a lovely evening here, definitely worth a visit if you're in Funchal.

The food is really good, probably one of the better restaurants in Madeira. The staff is very friendly, and the ambiance is superior. Rooftop terrace is nice, but make a reservation upfront l.

Loved this restaurant! I had the seafood spaghetti which tasted so nice and fresh. The lovely staff and the upstairs outdoor seating made an amazing atmosphere! Would recommend booking as it gets very busy, however they did manage to squeeze us in after waiting

One of the best in Madeira. The limpets d squid were exceptional. Seafood spaghetti and prawns were also great. I might suggest skipping the espetada (beef on stick). Reservation highly recommended (you’ll need to book 2 weeks in advance) but you can also try to walk in at off peak hours.

Two days in Funchal and two days lunch in a restaurant. That says enough. Excellent food, cod, fish, shellfish. Also recommended for meat lovers. Super friendly service and a wonderful terrace with a view of the sea. Michelin recommendation. Flawless.

Marvelous, astonishing, stupendous. Best food I have tried on whole Madeira. Moreover the best restaurant I have visited there with best staff. No wonder they get mentioned in Michelin guide. Huge variety of dishes, from meat to fish and seafood, everything prepared perfectly. Nothing to complain about, I would go there again and again if I could, trying every single dish from menu.

The food was delicious - big portions, very nice taste. Additional points for very kind and super friendly staff. Must see in Funchal;)

The best restaurant on the island. Now I understand why Michelin is recommending it 2018-2021. It’s absolutely a must to visit. Thanks to chef and stuff for everything.

The staff is very friendly and supportive. They can suggest and offer tailored dishes according to your preferences. The food itself (we had squid, espada/swordfish and other fish of the day, were all superb, so was the maracuja pudding). The atmosphere is super friendly and relaxed and the views from the terrace open up a little bit of the ocean, lush greenery and old rooftops of traditional houses nearby. Highly recommended.

Best meal all trip ! We had a great waitress who suggested the onion soup, lamb chops and chocolate sublime dessert and they were all delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Very good ambiance, food was so good! We had the fillet with madeira wine, the fillet engineer style (without mushrooms) and it accompanied with potatoes 4 ways and steamed vegetables. Will be back again!!
