Ranks as one of the best in Ireland. Knowledgeable staff, well kept premises with great displays. Plenty of information on hand. Teenagers may be a little bored to be honest but younger children and adults will find plenty to interest them. Some massive tanks that are very well stocked. Don't rush through, take you time to explore and read the well presented information and you won't be disappointed. Well worth a visit.

I changed my review for a 4 stars. I gave a 3 stars at the beginning but not because they deserve a 3 but they deserve a score close to 4. I really really enjoyed the place, the big aquarium at the entry is amazing. We enjoyed it. Also we loved to see the octopus try to get a treat inside the frozen Pepsi bottle. It was super nice. The place is super clean too. The reason my 3.5-4 stars is not against the aquarium at all, it's because it's a small aquarium to visit. My husband and I really love to visit the aquariums every place we go and this one is not super super big BUT you will enjoy it for sure. :)

Yeah we liked this place! Our daughter enjoyed looking at all the fish. We didn’t stay too long, I always think these places are quite overpriced with just a quick visit with a downstairs and upstairs, probably better if you time it right for one of the shows. Didn’t need to buy a ticket in advance. It was €28 euros for 2 adults and children under 2 are free.

Small, but lovely. Set on two levels, this place offers quite a variety of sea life. Great for children and adults alike. And as with all places you truly enjoy, you wish it was bigger and offered more. The only downside I could point out is that in 15 years between my visits it had not changed one bit. Nothing added or expanded. Its frozen in time. A pity, truly. I recommend to visit it, you'll love it.

Have been here a number of times. I always think it's a small place and I won't have too much interest going again. Everytime I'm wrong! Great place great staff. I wish they had a way to send out the sound from the eels as it's meant to be stunning. Feeding time recommended. I have forgotten the staff members name but he was just great. It is small but it's packed with fun

It's a fantastic place to bring children. Couldn't believe the variety of different types of fish 🐟 that were in the Galway aquarium. Beautiful colours and very interesting learning about the different types of fish. Well set out

Lovely friendly and compact aquarium but still with loads to see. Like the good amount of benches to sit and it's interesting to see their status as to whether they are endangered. Nicely laid out too.

On a blustery Galway day it was nice to find something to do indoors. Plenty of free parking nearby if the Aquarium park is full. A great way to spend a couple of hours. The fish and marine animals on display were fantastic. I loved the giant glass wall with big fish 🐟 swimming by. The flat fish in the shallow pool were amazing popping their heads out to look at you. The tanks were clean and well looked after. It was busy but we had plenty of room to enjoy the displays. Great for all ages.

It was an interesting experience visiting the aquarium, we visited as a group and it was a one way system which guided us around a number of big tanks and some really rather small. There were small information cards next to each tank explaining what was inside with it’s diet and habitat along with its conservation status. I did enjoy looking at a number of the fish however I did noticed a number of the tanks were rather empty looking and I wondered to myself if this was a suitable “mock” habitat for some of the animals. It just looked a bit sad. The sizes of the smaller tanks looked rather “pet shop” rather than aquarium which was a tad surprising. Just as we were headed to leave one of the sharks managed to somehow launch itself out of the tank and landed about a meter from me and starting convulsing on the floor. I ran to get someone to help and the staff member rushed off to get someone else. Was quite the adrenaline rush and I really feared for the animal but eventually a staff member came and threw it back in the tank. It seemed fine and swam off. The staff member commented that it might be time to move it to another tank but that it has never happened before. I hope not. Was not fun to watch. I think the aquarium is great as a place of learning and I did enjoy it. But I would like to come back and see that a number of the animal tanks have been expanded in size and have a bit more decoration in them.

Free car park available. Early time slot booking preferably as no crowd then, you can have the whole place to yourself. Some exhibits were empty, probably as they just started reopening. However some of the aquariums are very visibly dirty, hopeful they will address this issue. Otherwise pleasant visit, enjoyable. Can spend almost 30min in there with current display.

Nice visitor attraction. The splash as you go in was a real adrenalin rush. Plenty to see and do, including (for us) spot the flat fish. The children in there all looked to be having a good time too. It wasn't too crowded first thing. Loved the sharks

We, 2 adults and 5 kids, went to the aquarium and it was €61 which I felt was excellent value. They say you could do it all in 45 minutes but we stayed nearly 2 hours. The kids loved it from the minute we walked in the door at the first tank. There's a great variety of fish from Irish waters and they look really well cared for and healthy. The feeding times were a hit also and the caretaker was extremely informative and had no problem spending extra time answering our questions. If I have one complaint it was that some tanks didn't have the names of the fish on them and the big fish tank had more types of fish than mentioned on the display. Apart from that, I highly recommend it for a family morning or afternoon.

The aquarium was smaller than we expected, but this was a bonus with a 5 year old that has a short attention span. We were able to talk with the staff and they answered all of our questions in the best detail, we also got to see some of the fish being fed & gain more knowledge of those sea creatures. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, we will definitely be back!

Moderately sized aquarium with some really great sea life and some cool information posted around. We really liked the splash tank at the very start! A bit expensive for the size of it but really fun if you like aquariums and need to get inside on a rainy day.

Wonderful staff, brilliant displays. Great tour layout and it was brilliant fun for the kiddos. Only downside is that the gift shop was understood, and parking spaces are tricky to find on the weekend visits.

Very interesting variety of animals, mainly fish. Discovered (in a video only) the existence of the firebird fish, which stunned me. They had a feeding of the small dogfish and rays in a big tank. It was interesting to walk around and had some interesting things to toy with.

A great showing of some amazing marine wildlife. Quite a big aquarium. I know that it is mostly local wildlife to Ireland but I feel that some more exotic fish etc would be a plus.

The Aquarium was very interesting. Very educational in terms of local /Irish fish. I had expected there to be more tropical fish. The tanks for the fish are mostly open tanks where you could almost reach in and touch the fish. Bar one large tank everything is in small easy to see tanks. There is a one way system in place due to the covid restrictions and booking is required.

Enjoyed the time we spent at the aquarium completely. The fact that most of the tanks are based on Irish waters and what lives in the surrounding waters made it all the more enjoyable. Learned a lot which I never knew before and from start to finish could not complain. Pre book your slot before arrival as limited spaces available due to covid restrictions, also free car parking at the aquarium.

Interesting place. The kids loved it. But mask wearing wasn't checked. Only a small sign requesting mask wearing at the entrance. No further signs within the aquarium. Several people were not wearing masks and some refused to do so.

I really enjoyed this aquarium, particularly because it had mostly native marine species rather than exotic, so was amazing to see how diverse our seas are. Tanks were specially designed with species needs in mind too, especially the ones which live in rough waters, fast flowing rivers/ canals, deep sea ect which I thought was very positive.

It was ok, we were over charged at the door on the way in , asked what age our youngest was and were told then family pass for €40 when my youngest should have been free and even if we paid for an adult fare for my 5 year old it should have been €13 cheaper, some interesting fish species but not a huge place nor a huge variety of fish either . It only takes about a half an hour to see everything. It's fine if you have a half an hour to spare if your on that side of the city but certainly wouldn't travel to visit it again.

The only other aquarium I've been to is in Bray, and this one is in another league, really enjoyable. Nice coffee shop beside it, and the gentleman in the gift shop was a dote, let the kids have tastes of ice-cream foc so they could decide what flavour they wanted! Loved it!

First time visiting the aquarium. My daughter enjoyed the experience. Not very big or modern. Displays including large tanks are good. Easy to spot the animals with good illustrations and displays. However the aquarium may benefit from a makeover or renovation. We managed find a parking space as well. It was busy due to holiday period. If you are visiting salthill promenade, and the area, it may be good for the kids to visit the aquarium too. I can imagine how busy the area will be during summer months.

This is a great amenity, really lovely for the kids, and really nicely laid out. Very interesting animals, great stuff to read, and lovely experience. The staff were lovely and friendly. One thought- It felt very short, even visiting everything and taking a moment with each tank we were finished very quickly. (We went around the lap again). I’m not sure what to do about that, but sharing if it’s helpful.

Little disappointed that in the biggest fish tank were not 2 big sharks and turtle as I saw them last time, but I hope they let them go into the ocean when they outgrew the tank. Nice and clean inside, only it's pity that submarine was closed, but still worth visiting, staff is very friendly there

This is a great aquarium! There is a lot of focus on conservation, research, and education about local species. Definitely try to go at feeding time of the freshwater fish (1pm). They have a great selection of sharks, rays, and flounder. Mind the splash at the beginning!! My only criticism would be the gift shop - for a place so focused on keeping our oceans clean, the gift shop had far too many small cheap plastic toys that seemed really in contradiction with their mission.

Great location to go on a morning or afternoon with friends or family. There are many different types of sea life with very accessible and interesting information about them. The guides are so kind and enthusiastic about it. Try coming on the feeding time, especially if you have kids, as the guides will give the food to the kids to give to the fishes. They have a feeding time at 13:00.

Decent aquarium in Salthill area of Galway. Not as diverse as some larger aquariums I've been to but the focus here is on species found in Irish waters. It's well presented and relaxing to walk around for kids and adults interested in this kind of thing. I found the pricing reasonable for what you get, worth a look if visiting Galway

It's a lovely stop on your day in salthill. From exciting wave pools to seeing life cycles, it's bound to have sea friend for everyone. We loved the octopus and he put on a great wee show for us! It's smaller than I thought and you don't want it to end as quickly but it will keep you busy for an hour or so for sure. Book online for a smooth sailing through entry. And definitely visit ice-cream bar and gift shop on the way out!

A wonderful visit to this aquarium again. Small but good quality. It's clean, well run, really interesting exhibits, and the staff are helpful. A big thank you to Tara at the front desk who is not only cheerful and effecient but very kind. A great playground nearby so it's a lovely afternoon to do the aquarium, and then an hour in the playground, and a walk along the beach. Benches to eat a picnic and nice coffee close by.

A very well maintained aquarium, with very friendly staff, informative pieces of information and very cool skeletons. It's quite reasonable entry and they have an amazing entrance as soon as you walk in that I won't spoil. There are 2 floors, and even some puzzles for kids. All in all, it was a fun way to spend an hour asleep learned a lot from the experience. I would definitely visit it again in a couple of years.

Really nice experience. We got there in time for the 1pm fresh water fish feeding. The guide was really good and engaging with the kids allowing them to feed the fish. The place is very well set out and all the fish are from our oceans, rivers and lakes. The staff at reception were so friendly answering some of the kids questions and providing them with stickers for filling out their sheets. Would highly recommend. But don't rush it enjoy the place and the amazing fish. 5 stars

We always visit when In the area. Tickets are reasonable. Hasn't changed too much in a long time but it's well maintained and the staff we met were great. Some more interesting exhibits than some other aquariums we've been too, perhaps lacks a true "show stopper" feature but it's strong across the board, lots of learning to be done here and the staff great to chat too EDIT: The below paragraph was part of my original review but owner clarified that the gift shop is a separate business, did not realise this. In that case would like to have some branded merch within the aquarium itself, would definitely have picked some up, we're big fans. **A minor gripe, but the gift shop could do with a refresh, not much on offer in terms of branded merch (we like to get a magnet from places we visit, but nothing like that there) and the book section very basic (mostly young kids books, could be fleshed out with more fact/science books etc)**

Sensible accomodations for Covid restrictions, good one-way path through the tanks. I've taken the kids many times, each one's first time as a toddler has been memorable, especially the huge full height tank and the rays.

I visited here recently I was less than impressed , we covered the whole place in less than 20 mins that was bad enough but we had to have a stand up argument with the ticket man because he insisted we should pay for my 2 year old granddaughter even though the prices clearly states children 2 AND under were free , all in all a waste of good money but on the plus side the gift shop is very well ran with a very pleasant man working there . With more people holidaying at home this year these places need to step up to encourage people to return

They had a wide range of variety of sharks and other see animals, a top thing to do while in Galway. There’s a cafe just right by it and a souvenir shop just outside.

It's definitely one of the bigger aquariums in Ireland. We have been to a few now and this easily has the largest collection of sea creatures. I would have given it five stars if there was the usual guide taking place but due to Covid measures these were cancelled. There's a few cool features inside, the large tanks are especially hypnotic. There's just a few too many areas inside shut down to fully enjoy it. We'll try again after things return to normal.

I really enjoyed seeing the native species like Bass, trout and especially the large mullet. As a fisherman i was really suprized to see them kept in a tank ands healthy, which shows the great job the staff here do The two oscar oscar cichlids were absolutely stunning aswell,Tank was spotless and really well presented for them. My baby son really enjoyed the bright colours of the koi carp and wrasse 2 floors in total with so heavy traffic areas but unfortunately due to covid we got no food displays or feeding times which is understandable. I am unsure weather the 13euro ticket price is good or not but i know for sure it isnt cheap to keep these fish alive so its nice to know it goes to their upkeep somewhat. Overall a good 1.5hours experience

Located on the salt hill prom - the Alantaquaria is a pleasent way to spend an hour or two looking at live fish. Booking is essential in these times but the staff are flexible. Some of features and attractions are closed in the current climate but doesnt take away from the experience. Parking is free on the prom or in the carpark beside the entrance. There is a playground also nearby to keep the kids entertained.

  • 5/5 Kathryn S. 6 years ago on Google
The fisheries museum was an unplanned stop but one of the best places we visited in Galway! Brendan the tour-guide gave a comprehensive and interesting history of the Corrib River and Galway City. He was incredibly knowledgeable and very friendly! The views of the river were beautiful from the top of the tower. Definitely worth it if you love Irish history, fishing, or both!

There’s a note saying ‘back in 10’ when i was there and it obviously took more than 10...i couldnt get in. So i pictured in my head the view from there. Should be nice.

Since 10 years they have not changed anything inside. Very poor maintenance. Everything in weak and poor quality. But fish are fish - they are well I think. Kids liked it .

It was OK. Was expecting a bit more for the price. We walked through in about 30 minutes. Due to Covid we were unable to touch the rays which is completely understandable but maybe hindered our enjoyment.

  • 3/5 Jermaine A. 4 years ago on Google
Overall it was a good visit, however it was very dark inside and our little one (22 months) got very scared and she’s normally fine. I’m not an expect but assume it’s dark for the fish... It was a self guided tour and it felt like it was overpriced for what you get. Still good for a trip out to keep the little ones entertained.

Nice little aquarium with a lot of interesting fish and water creatures. It would be nice to have more information next to the exhibits. Fish feeding was very informative and we could get very close to the sharks/sting rays. Well kept, even though the building seems old and a bit run down. Ticket price seems a bit high for a small place like this. Overall a nice thing to see when in Galway.

I don't want to take away from the hard work these guys put into what they do. It just doesn't stand up to other aquariums I've been to. The kids enjoyed though. The gift shop is a little sad but there are some cafés beside it that are lovely. The Promenade is gorgeous for a walk on a nice day.

Expected to quicky pass thru, but it turned to be that I stayed for a couple of hours. Partly because I have an aquaculture specialist with me, but also because of the extraordinary designo of pools and marine life they have there. This is enchanted place and very much worth a visit. If you have a kids, they will enjoy so many baby and small sharks, but also all other kind of fish. Blue lobster is amazing looking (similar can bee seen in Achill island aquarium).

Aquariums are by their very nature a little bit fishy🐠. However, due to its Covid policy, this one is not too crowded, so you can really enjoy the friendly rays and sharks🦈. Children will absolutely love it. Please note that those fish are not some kind of underwater dogs, so don't touch or hug them.

Great to spend some time here to see and learn more about the native aquatic life in Ireland and beyond. It’s not too expensive to enter here and it was a very educational experience though the octopus was being sneaky that day and didn't show up. I appreciate how the conservation status of the animals in their care are also on display – a good way of raising awareness of the challenges faced by wildlife. The gift shop has a diverse selection for souvenirs and they have a lot of novelty gifts (like an octopus mug!) We enjoyed it here and the Galway Atlantaquaria is a must visit.

Enjoyable and our 6 year old had fun. One way system operating and it was very quiet on a wet Saturday afternoon. A little short if I'm honest for the €31 admission for a family of 3. May explain how quiet it was. Probably won't go back at that price but worth a once off visit.

Cool Average price Kids will enjoy the flat pools and the different fish types There is an outdoor play ground

  • 4/5 Diana S. 2 years ago on Google
It's small but still a very nice aquarium and definitely worth the price of admission (which is very affordable). They have a good variety of aquatic creatures and they seem to be well taken care of. The layout prevents too much crowding, as you can only go in one direction. Overall, it's a very educational experience and definitely worth checking out!

Really enjoyed our rainy afternoon here with our 7 and 9 year olds. Family ticket was €40 and I could book online. The aquarium is small but if you slow down there is something to discover in every corner. I especially enjoyed the moon jellyfish, so lovely to watch.

Great little Aquarium.. the kids love going here. There is so many tanks to explore and see a d its very child friendly. Only down side, is every time we've been here there is never staff on the floor to ask questions or do demonstrations etc it would be nice if they did showcases or at least be available for questions

  • 3/5 Philip's e. 1 year ago on Google
The reasons for 3 star. I've been to several aquariums in 7 countries and I don't want to compare but its not just worth the price you pay means its small thats it. It would be better if you add more ponds/fishes in the aquarium. And the style is out dated. Sorry no offense

Cool place for adults and kids, would of liked to have been able to touched some sort of fish or atleast feed them in a natural fashion

  • 3/5 Rae P. 1 year ago on Google
Lovely staff. As the aquarium is focused on Ireland's waters, do not expect any large exotic exhibits. We loved seeing the native species. It is a bit tired, and the gift shop isn't unique. We visited off-season, so I hope they have more activities and more engaging exhibits in the busier seasons.

An educational but interactive and fun way for adults and kids to spend a couple of house in Salthill. Aquarium is on two levels and houses fish and shark species find in Irish coastal waters as well as exotic fish including piranha, Dory, clown fish and offer fish. Some huge tanks with very large fish in them too and smaller tanks with invertebrates. Very interesting and nice little gift shop attached.

  • 4/5 Martin S. 1 year ago on Google
It's a little small, but it does a nice job of explaining the boats and fish local to the area. They were very good to the kids with a scavenger hunt and prize.

  • 5/5 Irene H. 1 year ago on Google
A great place, especially with children. There's a lot to see and lots of information. We loved the octopus, but all the other fish are interesting, too. The only small drawback was the really thought-provoking film on how to reduce plastic waste, and then seeing all the plastic toys in the Aquarium shop...

Just to say: I'm a local. 2 adults and 3 kids between 6 and 14. We loved this place. It really has improved since we last visited before the pandemic. No wait, we booked tickets in advance but an extra person joined us and it was no problem getting 1 more ticket when we got there. It's small, but a lot to do. It's a really great place, super interesting and loads of different sea animals and facts. Totally recommend this place, it's a really unspoken place to visit when in galway, but great for those bad weather days, or just if you want something indoors. Absolutely worth it, we enjoyed it greatly. Good for all ages. Nice staff also!

The design of each exhibition is so cool. I loved how they did the harbour, canal and weir/dam. The thought that went behind it was so intriguing and made it all the more interesting to look at. Lovely staff and so so friendly. You could do this whole place in 45 mins easily. But I was in here for nearly two hours. Absolutely grand. Thanks to all! (Gift shop could do with some work)
