"EL
MUĂ‘ECON"
OF
ZONE
5
OF
THE
CAPITAL
OF
GUATEMALA
The
Monument
to
Work,
also
known
as
“the
doll”,
is
one
of
the
emblematic
sculptures
in
the
capital.
It
is
located
in
Zone
5
of
Guatemala
City
and
was
made
more
than
80
years
ago.
Part
of
its
creation
is
an
honor
to
Guatemalan
workers.
The
Monument
to
Work,
popularly
known
as
El
Muñecón
in
zone
5,
is
a
representation
of
Worker's
Day
in
Guatemala.
However,
this
commemoration
is
made
in
honor
of
International
Labor
Day,
which
is
celebrated
on
May
1
of
each
year.
This
sculpture
was
created
in
May
1931
by
the
sculptor
Rafael
Yela
GĂĽnther
with
the
purpose
of
commemorating
the
date
on
which
the
Central
Workers
Union
of
Chicago
called
its
members
to
a
general
strike
to
demand
labor
rights,
including
that
the
working
day
be
8
hours.
This
emblematic
monument
is
in
the
La
Palmita
neighborhood,
in
Zone
5.
Likewise,
it
is
considered
to
have
great
geographical
value.
This
is
because
it
serves
as
a
reference
and
location
for
people
who
travel
within
said
jurisdiction.
