It was created in 1355 and is the only remaining city gate from the defenses of Haarlem. Until the 17th century it was the city gate used for traffic by land eastwards towards Spaarnwoude over the Laeghe weg (now Oude weg). In 1631 the Haarlemmertrekvaart was dug, which shortened the waterway from Haarlem to Amsterdam considerably. Until that time, boats bound for Amsterdam did not pass here, but traveled up the Spaarne river to pass the small sluice gate at Spaarndam, in order to reach the IJ. Coaches traveling by land to Amsterdam did leave this gate over the Oude Weg to the Liede, where they would cross at Penningsveer (a ferry for a penny), to Spaarnwoude and from there, journey onwards along the old IJdijk to Amsterdam.

I really liked the goal. I was there early in the morning and the gate had the perfect light for very nice photos. If you are already in Haarlem you should take a look at this attraction.

(Translated by Google) It has a very high historical value, but since it has not become a tourist resort, the gate is standing with a dawn. Although it is located in Harlem, the name Amsterdam Gate is because this gate is in the direction of Amsterdam. Originally built in 1355 in this area, it was reborn in 1865 in its current shape.

Definitely pretty, but nothing around. It’s mainly residential area and there’s a pizzeria nearby if you’re too hungry. Let’s say 15min walk from city center (the shopping area)

The old city gate of Haarlem. Very impressive structure. It's surrounded by water, has a bridge and you can walk through it. Pretty cool

A 14th century gate that was part of the wall that indicated then the edge of the city. Surrounding the wall and gate were thornbushes to deter enemies from getting close to the gate but as the city grew throughout the centuries, more of the wall and gates gotten dismantled. This is the only gate that survived the centuries. Originally this gate was called Spaarnwoudegate.

A lovely place with its history. Used to be the gate to Amsterdam. And now is more a connection rather than a border. Impressive, and lovely ducks))

Beautiful and impressive city gate, reminiscent of World Disney. Definitely worth a visit and can also be easily incorporated into a city tour of Haarlem. The water around is already a good greenish color so it's best to stay on the bridge of the gate. ;)

A simple piece of history - a gatehouse from the old city boundaries. You can walk through it and see the old stone. There is not much information actually provided at this location, but you can still use it as they did in the past. Beautiful spot to look at!

Feels overrated considering the dirty (algae?) waters. The fort is pretty but small and near a busy street with not much to see.

Haarlem is a definitely visiting place. Beautiful scenery, peaceful, perfect for a nice long walk. You can visit Molen De Adriaan a famous windmill which provides a tour and explains the history of the windmill.

10 min walk from Molen de Adriaan. Nice structure but there is nothing around this place other than a busy road and residential area. All info is in Dutch.

The old city gate of Haarlem, Netherlands is so cute and the fort it just ideal for beautiful pictures. It’s absolutely not crowded and there’s no entry fee. Looking at the old pictures of the poort to now looks just as authentic. Great that it’s free to walk through this spectacular architecture.

It is a gate, quite old and looks cool. There's nothing in it at all. 4/5 stars, lacks an overpriced museum cafe

Well worth adding this to a walking or cycling tour of Haarlem. A pretty sight. Probably not a must see for the little ones.
