I first want to thank the previous reviewers for getting my interest up in this museum. As a hypnotherapist, I, of course, am interested in anything of the mind, which I consider to be everything in our human experience. This museum has done such an amazing job of putting things together. As was suggested by some of the previous reviewers, I didn't book online, and I showed up early, like 11am to give myself ample time to get it through. The exhibits are not overwhelmingly a lot. The place, though very interesting, is not even huge. What is an integral part is the multi-media device they give you. You can listen in as in any other museum. Furthermore, on the device, you can watch clips of videos, do quizzes etc. It's all beautifully orchestrated. I spent 4.30 hours there, including a lunch break right there in the cafe. A very enjoyable experience.

This is one of my favourite museums ever!! So informative so interesting! Is a must go when in the Netherlands, 10 min away from the station of Haarlem also!! Have I photographed the whole place? Seems like it, but definitely not!! So so much more to see in the visit!! I went at 11 and took me 4 hours, with one of the guided tours, to finish! There are many types of guide that can be chosen, I advise you to first scroll to all as some tell just about some of the arts, some tell about them all!! I was advised to use the highlights one but ended up using the full one explaining everything in the museum+ had some extra video to understand better!! I loved it so much I can't wait to go back again!! And to visit the Amsterdam location too!!

Makes total sense why they've received the top museum award. The personification in the voice of the audio guide to the thought provoking walkthrough was like a performance rather than a museum. You can see the depth to which the curators went to walk us through how a kid walks through to the school on their first day. The rooms are divided into different theme, mind, mental help , old age/ disability, asylum, depression, cultural, self reflection etc. So yes they had everything.

Very interactive and "instagramable" but for my prespective a bit to widely focused. Would love more indepth knowledge on the history of the building and mental health treatment. Tests were a nice addition.

Enjoyed learning about the mind, psychiatry and the history of the building. Audio tour was great and easy to spend 1.5 hours here. Musuem shop is also nice.

Best museum for the mind. Great place to be in a gloomy day (which is about 75% of a year 😂) but this place will brush off your mood and bring you into a complete new level of life realisation. Do not assume, just listen to the story the tour provides, and be open minded. Then you will walk out and grow a little.

It just needed to be more. Pardon me, but it was all in Dutch. A smattering of English translation would have been preferred. EDIT: the owner replied that the tours are indeed in English. I have not taken an audio tour. In my review above, I was referring to the descriptions of the museum objects on the wall - those were all in Dutch.

The Museum of The Mind is one of a kind - the location and the exposition are not to be found anywhere else. My recommendation is to visit the museum with time and patience - it's not something I'd be doing in a rush. The Museum is not big, but listening to all the audio tour guides - I wouldn't recommend going in without it - and reflecting on everything that is being discussed, takes time. Visit it with an open mind and you should take the best out of it. Their cafeteria has a privileged view, give it a try if you are hungry

I enjoyed the visit, and indeed you can spend there a lot of time - depending on your interests and time available. We “only” had a little over 1.5 hours, and I would have preferred to have a little more. I would question the price tag (20eur) but with Museumkaart it’s free, so can’t complain :). The only suggestion is to add the ability to change speed in the audio tour (I desperately was lacking 1.5x option :))

This museum won a European museum of the year 2022. It has an interactive audio tour on what is normal, outsider art and some introspective quizzes. It is all related to the mind, psychology and wellbeing. The museum was a building that housed people that were mentally disturbed and/or had infectious diseases like leprosy. Worth a visit!

Very interesting museum dedicated to the mind, did the open mind tour with the audio guide. The tour took over two hours and the subjects could be quite heavy. There’s also some time for some retrospective. If you’re going be prepared to confront yourself

Interactive exhibition that both shares the history of mental health treatment as well as provides opportunity for self-reflection through the world of modern and not-so-modern art. I read many negative reviews about “another great museum turned into multimedia circus”, but I only visited it after renovation and therefore cannot compare to what it was before. And it was an enjoyable visit! Only thing that I would recommend to improve is an ability to play the audio guide at x1.5 or even x2.0 speed - talking too slow.

Wonderful exhibit about mindfulness, mental health, treatment of the homeless and elderly and do much more. Great little tablet for the audio guide, easy to use and navigate. The only thing keeping me from a five star review is that the full tour was just way too long. In order to hear all the stories and fully participate in the exhibits, it takes several hours to get all the way through, and this was not communicated especially clearly at the beginning of the tour. There are shorter options, but they need to be clearly explained. The quality and content of the rooms and the tour as a whole were excellent. Well worth an exploration.

Interesting art exhibition with an audio tour which explains the transformation of the buildings use over time. Some of the art exhibitions are also interactive with writing notes to contribute to the displays.

Please reserve a day to visit Haarlem and go to this amazing museum about mental health. It's absolutely worth it!

This is more an experience than a museum, you follow the tours using your audiovisual guide that complement and explain the exhibits. It's all about the brain, personality and the psychological aspects of our lives.

Interesting museum with a lot of audio content in English if you get the free guide, although a little disjointed at times and each exhibit doesnt always flow well, as to be expected when you are in a museum where English is the second language. I do feel however that it was pretty expensive (20€) for what you get and I feel like the staff were a bit unwelcoming and the fact we weren't even allowed to use the bathroom before we left at 4.55pm (so technically still before close) is pretty poor service to be honest. We spent 40€ there for a couple of hours and we can't take a quick wee wee before we go? Come on.

Very informative. Very well-organized. A great way to have a holistic view of mental health and well-being through the years.

European Museum of the year 2022 Visited on Saturday - 28th May 2022 No waiting period Total ticket price - 55 Euros Took us about 3.5 hours to complete the tour Definitely worth the visit and everyone should visit once 👍 Did get a little monotonous towards the middle for the kids.

Really extensive exhibition, but 2 hours was not enough by far.

This was a very informative and interesting visit to an incredibly historic building. This museum (in a building near 700 years old) covers the history of psychology and it’s associated illnesses and treatments over the years (from the medieval times, through the plague and up to the time of Freud and today). The focus is on meeting individuals who have suffered from mental illness, how they live and how many have learned to use their unique condition to create art and harness talent. It's not necessary to book in advance, however you may wish to do so if you want an English tour. Most information is in Dutch only right now (most of the interactive features) however they have plenty of written information in English. Give yourself about 2 hours to enjoy.

Only the price is a little unbelievable high, 20euro for an adult. Exhibits might be many, but less interesting.

Impressive museum if you're interrested in more than just a coffee and a cake...time for some deep thoughts
