Very cool castle that was the home of Ludwig II when he was a child. Definitely worth the visit. Interior is furnished with original items. Buy tickets in advance and be sure to be there at the appointed time. Easy parking a short distance down the hill. Nice little gift shop.

Great tour and wonderful visit. We thoroughly enjoyed both the inside space and outside. Well maintained and ran like clockwork. I would advise anyone to buy their tickets online ahead of time - we purchased our tickets weeks in advance.

Wow! Worth a visit for everyone. Again, you can't take any pics inside but plenty of photo ops outside of the castle and the surrounding scenery. My advice is get there as early as possible, past 10am it gets ridiculously busy. Tickets are timed so it's all very orderly. You can walk up to the castle, but I'd suggest taking the bus from the car park, you can then walk off to the right and go on the bridge, it's then a 5 min walk up to the castle. There's a shop, loos and lockers for bags. There are also loos once you're into the main courtyard. As of Aug '22 you need to wear a mask inside, but they do sell them at the info desk for €2 each. After you can walk down the hill or take a horse drawn cart (€4ea) but it takes the same amount of time. Plenty of options for eating and drinking around the car park. If you walk along the road past the car park, with it on your right, you'll be treated to an amazing blue lake nestled amongst mountains. Stunning.

It's a beautiful castle, with a lot of interesting history. The staff was very kind and the tour of the castle was nice. However, 21€ is quite expensive for how little is shown. But nonetheless, it was a good experience.

Bring a swimsuit 👙🩲 to swim in the lake after the tour! An impressive castle on the inside, and a nice exterior view especially from the lake. The forced guided tour only shows you a fraction of the castle 🏰 but it's enough to get a sense of how the knights and royalty lived here.

Stunning, inside and out, with beautiful architecture and a rather interesting history. The grounds and castle are well maintained. Museum tour system was the most organized I’ve ever seen.

Part of the dynamic dou of castles here. You can't see one without the other. Buy tickets in advance because they can and usually will sell out. Wonderful tour full of history, very friendly and knowledgeable staff.

This year my husband and I decided to do castle tours in Germany. Yesterday we visited Hohenschwangau, (our 3rd castle visited in 2 days). I love the vibrant color of the exterior. It has a beautiful courtyard with a pretty fountain and landscape. Too bad it was raining which prevented us from taking some amazing photos of the castle and spending more time in the courtyard. This castle along with many others does not allow photography during the tour. King Maximilian II commissioned the construction of this castle. It has 50 rooms, rooms are small and have less decor than some of the other castles around. Overall it is a beautiful castle, overlooking the town below, and the mountains. I advised repurchasing the tour tickets ahead of time, less hassle. Guided tour comes in multiple languages. Our tour guide spoke English well.

Very cool, you are not allowed to take pictures inside of the castle. You will generally need a ticket in advance for the 'Audio Guild' tour. If you are disabled there is a large number of stares and my be difficult for some people. Overall the castle is wonderful if you are in the area I highly recommend check it out. FWI this is a souvenir shop.

Bookings essential as these are timed guided tours. This castle is beautiful in and out and with most of the original furniture etc. The art on the walls to the ornaments in each room, are exquisite. And marvel at the amazing work that took near 20 years to complete. No photos allowed.

This castle is located in the same vicinity as the Neuschwanstein Castle. We were disappointed that online tickets were all sold out, but we decided to tour the grounds anyway- and it was worth the trip. We took a horse carriage up and walked down ( easy 10 minute walk). Touring the grounds was absolutely free and fun! This castle doesn't have the Fairy Tale style architecture that The Neuschwanstein Castle does- probably due to the fact that original construction in the 12th Century. The castle was reconstructed in 1863 after the original structure was decayed and war damaged. This castle was the summer residence of the royal family. We took a train from Munich for only $15 each - and this even included the bus shuttle from Fussen to Hohenschwangau. There are lots of dining and shopping options, as well as many many hotel options if you want to stay the night.

Just a wonderful place. Must visit for everyone who is the first time in Bavaria. The castle is completely underrated compared with the castle Neuschwanstein in the neighborhood. But the rooms are wonderful decorated with wall paintings and cups, tables etc. Even the Park is wonderful. If you are in the park and look down to the lake ("Alpensee"), then you could imagine why they build this castle.

Very cute castle with great views. Be prepared to make the hike (~1 mile) uphill. It is helpful if you purchase your tickets online and in advance so that they don't sell out. Can easily be reached from Munich via the regional trains and an 8 minute bus ride on either the 78 or 73 busses. If you plan to go on a warm day, pack your swim suit and take advantage of the beautiful lake!

If you want to visit inside, booking in advance is a must. The tour inside is about 35 to 40 minutes, about 17 people per group. You can't take photos or anything, and you couldn't even spend enough time to appreciate the art and paintings due to they're kind of pushing to finish the tour. The price of the ticket is rather expensive for what you will get. For someone who doesn't have much interest in history or low budget. I would recommend Just go to look around outside the castle instead, it's very beautiful views and free.

This castle is beautiful with some gorgeous views. It has a tour but no pictures inside. The young lady Lisa is a local German from this town and her English is amazing. Here are some photos for your viewing pleasure. Today 18 Nov 2023.

Great place to visit for a day trip to Southern Germany. This castle was built in the 1800s by King Maximillian II. His son Ludwig lived there as a child and built the more photogenic castle across the valley when he was older. This particular castle is very well preserved. All of the furniture is still inside. It’s almost as if the residence simply went away for the weekend and let you come in to take a look at it! It is still privately owned, thus they do not allow any photographs to be taken inside. My wife and I found it interesting that the queen and king each had their own separate floor of the castle, however there is a secret staircase that connects their bedrooms for conjugal visits!

Visited the castle during recent trip to Germany, audio tour was very informative. 2 gift shops, small cafe . Awesome opportunity for photos . Definitely a tourist attraction. Had to pay for parking and bus ride up mountain.

It's a wonderful castle and place. We like it even more than Neuschwanstein. It's not so crowded, especially in the morning, sightseeings are amazing. We found that autumn is the best time to visit it. You should definitely buy tickets in advance and be prepared to walk a lot.

Just see castle in the Bavarian mountains. Highly recommend this castle tour over the neighbouring castle. Being much older than the larger castle next to it, the tour is much more interesting with some great insights and juicy stories from many centuries ago.

The family castle of Maxilliam II and later Ludwig II, this castle sits in the shadow of Neuschwanstein castle. The castle interior has been meticulously preserved with the original artifacts from the Royal family. Both the Queen's and King's chambers are included in the tour. Of the two castles, Hohenschwangau is I my opinion the better value and more interesting castle to visit. Purchasing tickets on-line and printing in advance is highly recommended to avoid the often long lines at the ticket counter at the information center.

Loved the tour for this castle! The docent was passionate about the history and engaged wonderfully with the group of English speaking tourists. This castle is equally beautiful to Neuschwanstein in its own manner. Well worth the time to visit! Strongly recommend purchasing the dual tickets in advance and allowing enough time to walk between locations.

The place was nice but very crowded on the weekend. The train and buses were loaded and the long queues everywhere. Would recommend taking a walk of the Alpensee located near by. It gives beautiful water reflection of the castles

Overall experience: The castle is amazing. Beautiful architecture, interior decor & scenery. Experience on site: I booked an audio guide tour for 3 pm but arrived very early so asked to join and earlier tour. Since it was a Tuesday, I was able to do it. We were accompanied by a guide on site so asking questions was possible and he was giving more details along the way. Photographs aren’t allowed except for one window where you can see the stunning view of the lake ans mountains around.

Great scenery up the hill that reaches its apex on the castle at the top. Amazing guided tour inside, very well organised. Tips: - Buy tickets in advance, they are scheduled and you can enter only at the time you bought, with a 5 minutes maximum delay - The audio guided tour has also a tour guide, that guide you into each room, and adds some more info on top of the audio (in English) - Dogs are not allowed, photos and videos of inside also not allowed - Best place to park is on P4 Parkplatz, only 12 minutes away from the entrance of the castle, and you also have access to the wonderful lake behind!

This was my first time ever seeing The Yellow Brick Hohenschwangau Castle. The yellow bricks really make this castle in Germany standout from the rest. We really enjoyed visiting this castle it’s quite an experience. The garden are really green, the statues and fountains are beautiful. I hope to visit The Yellow Brick Hohenschwangau Castle again in the future.

I takes 25 to 30 minutes up and down steep hills to get to this castle, and the literature says it's a 15 minute walk. So.....they lied!!! Get ready for a long grueling walk to get there and back from the bus pickup! And....there's only 2 rooms to see, as I understand, so what's the point? It's a great big MEH for me.

No words to explain the beauty of this place. Having seen a lot of palaces and cathedrals in Europe; this is definitely worth visiting. It looks mystical and surreal both during the day and during the night.

This was one of my favorite places I visited as it was all original since it was not destroyed in the war. Amazing and beautiful. I was not able to take pictures of the inside but the items were incredibly beautiful. You could see the wear and tear on the furniture which made it even more enjoyable as you could imagine exactly wear they laid and sat.

This is such an underrated castle, located in the same vicinity of Castle Neuschwanstein. The view from the castle is breathtaking and the courtyard has a very lovely garden with fountains. To enter inside you need to book tickets multiple days prior to the visit as only a few tickets are sold due to the current situation provoked by corona. You also get a magical view of the Neuschwanstein castle from there.

  • 5/5 Pallavi J. 2 years ago on Google
The walk up to the castle is amazing. If you don't like to walk you can take a horse carriage uphill which costs around €4.50 per person. You views from the castle boundary is amazing. You can see the beautiful lake Alpsee. Purchase Castle ticket from down the hill before starting your journey.

Beautiful castle walls and towers. There is a rich story (thanks to the amazing castle guide) on how King Ludwig designed and innovated the castle with electricity and even a lift ! Will consider this castle visit more of to accomplish a checklist if you are staying in Munich and not really a wow-must-visit attraction.

  • 5/5 Maciek G. 1 year ago on Google
Just like the other spots... Must visit when there, nice little gift shops, and interesting history with views. The walks to the castle probably take only about 10-15 min not 30 as said on brochures and I've short legs...

  • 3/5 Venu J. 1 year ago on Google
Beautiful setting, takes a lot of planning to get it right. Pros: great views, historic, reasonably well maintained. Good 20 minute uphill hike to get to. Cons: takes a lot of planning and buying tickets in advance, the guides speak only German even though almost the entire group were English speakers, no audio guides, you are shunted from room to room and there are no explanations or time to understand the art on the walls .. The museum within walking distance of this museum for which you have to buy tickets separately is 100x more interesting and worth it. This castle itself is rather meh.

Had the sweetest guide! It's such an easy walk compared to the Neuschwanstein one! If you want to see something beautiful while in town, Hohenschwangau Castle is well worth the visit.

Great castle to visit. We had a nice guided visit with an audio guide in English and a guide to answer questions. It was interesting and didn't take too long. Our group was only composed of 4 people, us included, so it was really nice. Great view from the castle too and a quick bus ride from and to Füssen. Be sure to check the return bus schedule as they are not really frequent.

While not quite as impressive as the neighboring Neuschwanstein Castle, this one is still worth checking out if you're in the area. You can actually buy a combo ticket to see both castles. I enjoyed seeing how this one compared and contrasted to Neuschwanstein Castle.

A beautiful, but pretty small castle. We were there on a very foggy day, so unfortunately we couldn’t enjoy the views there. We could only enjoy the interior of the castle, which is nice, but we could barely hear the guide speaking. It was a nice experience and I wish to come back one day on a clear weather to enjoy the views other people describe.

A beautiful and very different castle. I didn’t enjoy the tour as much as I thought I would. The inside is interesting but the garden outside is definitely the highlight. Lovely garden, and a stunning view of the lake.

  • 5/5 Martin K. 8 months ago on Google
Very interesting, beautiful from outside for sure. Inside strange but nice. Maybe something I am not used to see in Castles but worth the visit. As for tickets, coming before 8 am there is a chance to get in. On weekdays!

So much history packed onto a renovated mediaeval Castle. That belong to to King Ludwig's parents. King Ludwig would build the "fairytale castle" later. We did the audio tour that was informative but short. Our guild gladly added a few more interesting facts along the tour. Beautifully preserve with furniture at work and and gifts that were presented to the King and queens displayed and ready for viewing spectators.

We spent 4 hours exploring both castle in the entire complex. We also visited Schwangau to grab something really good to eat. Overall, a fantastic day and great tour guides giving us a lot of key information about the history of the buildings.

A very beautiful place to visit. Even if you don't go to the Castle there so much to see and do. Lots of cafe's and restaurants open. So it doesn't matter what time of day you go, you'll always fined somewhere to have a coffee ☕ or a meal.

Beautiful castle with informative tour guide. Walk up the mountain isn't bad or you can take horse and buggy. The walk around the lake is beautiful after dip your feet in the refreshing water to rejuvenate your walk.

The most beautiful castle, inside and outside, just amazing. Two ways to go up, beware people with strollers, take the road by the lake and the short one with stairs. Stunning views from inside of the turquoise lake waters, neuschwachstein Castle and scenic mountains all around.

  • 5/5 Edward R. 1 year ago on Google
A very beautiful and fairytale like castle just like neuschwanstein Castle. So much great architecture and natural landscaping. The view from the top is excellent with the view of the town and Lake Alpsee. Worth a visit and take your time. Our suggestion is to book on like before heading there not to be disappointed especially after the pandemic. Remember to bring a surgical mask as is must be worn inside the castle .

Such an idyllic setting, it is a must see when undertaking the Romantic Drive in Bavaria, Germany. Visited in early May 23 and found it to be a fantastic attraction. The day we got to visit was a little drizzly but it set the scene for a rather romantic time to do the tour through the castle. Our tour guide was a fun guy and added to the tour. Entry is by way of booked tickets and the whole process of visiting the castle is done quite precisely. You won't be disappointed.

We could not enter the castles, but the town they are located in is fascinating. The streets, the square, the buildings, the nature are unspoiled, every corner smells of history. Let me inform those who want to visit, you need to buy a ticket to enter the castles, you can buy a ticket for a single castle or you can buy a combined ticket and visit all the castles and museums. The point you should pay attention to is that the tickets are running out around 10:00, you need to come earlier and get your ticket. I couldn't enter the castles because I missed the ticket time, but being in that environment was still satisfying. You can have a pleasant time on a free weekend, I recommend it.

  • 5/5 mscarlitasway12 1 year ago on Google
It is best if you get tickets in advance. And they are very strict about the start time. The guide was awesome, her voice commanded attention that folks didn't talk over here. Give the tour guide at least $2 euro for a tip. Also be ready to walk up the hill to the castle. There are a lot of steps and it's not wheelchair friendly.
